What an interesting combination of a beautiful and terrible design. Just one more human attempt at trying to crack the mechanical adding machine egg, and unfortunately it fell on the "it would be easier to just use a pencil and paper" side of the scale despite its smart looking form factor. Thanks for sharing it! I'd love to see somebody try to fumble through a complicated division problem on this thing, just for the laughs.

Maybe you can put some heatshrink over the brass rollers?

Unfortunately the main roller cannot be removed from its frame, at least not without some damage that I don’t have the skills to repair. It would work for the small roller on top, but that is not sufficient to fix the problem.

Thanks Jaap. Good explanation. I can’t think I’ve heard you criticize a machine as much as this one. Not a great device.

Well, you'd already set the tone! But seriously, the basic idea of that printing mechanism is beautifully simple, so it is disappointing that the rest just did not live up to it.

This interface is really bad - easy to see why it wasn't a success. Reminds me of similar problems in modern comnercial software - ease of use not given any consideration in the system design.
