Salernes, a village in the Haut Var, has been renowned since the early nineteenth century for its production of hexagonal red tiles called: "tomette". Originally, the village was based on an agricultural economy. Oil, wine, figs, wheat, beans, melons and peaches were produced. There were also silk mills, hat factories and coarse sheets.
