The dog-whistler in the window (14:15) is actor/comedian DAVID BURNS, who at the time was starring (w/ Carol Channing) as Horace Vandergelder in the L-O-N-G running musical "Hello Dolly" on Broadway. An easy day's TV work for this well-known stage star during the weekly grind of the hit musical.

He was also in the original casts of "The Music Man" (Mayor Shinn) and "A Funny Thing...Forum" (as Senex). Unfortunately, when all 3 of these musical were made into Hollywood films, Burns was NOT asked to re-create his stage roles.

A mash up of Barefoot in the Park, Love on the Rooftop (Owen Madden has the right idea) and the Doris Day/Rock Hudson sophisticated comedies of the day. If I had to guess why it didn't get picked up it would be because the scope of the subject was so limited. The minute they got together the sparks would have dissipated. The movie versions of this type of story had a one-shot sustainability.

Believe it or not, I located information on the movie in the background, and therefore, the approximate date of this footage. At 35 seconds into this pilot, you can see a portion of a cinema on the left-hand side of the screen. The movie is "One, Two, Three," with Horst Buchholz and Arlene Francis. It is a political comedy film which was released in the United States on December 15th, 1961. Since this unsold pilot with Gary Lockwood is from 1965, it must have been sitting around for several years when the final decision not to pick it up as a regular series was made.

What a shame this wasn't picked up. If anything ever comes of generative AI besides demonic-looking crazy-eyed lunacy, maybe some day we can fan-fiction whole episodes of pilots that never took off. I want to know what became of these characters. Even before Mr. Kanter''s pitch at the end. According to wikipedia, as a kid he sold jokes wholesale to Eddie Cantor's writer Hugh Wedlock, who then sold them full price to the show. Truly, we can say Kanter's media career was born out of wedlock!!! ;-)

If this show was picked up as a regular series , Gary Lockwood couldn't have played Frank Poole in 2001. I believe they started shooting that movie in early 1966. I'll say one thing,: he's a lot more lively and animated here than as Frank.

The show was cancelled because Harry met Sally. I've never gone on a date in Manhattan where we did any sight seeing. because it's easier for two people to get to know each other when they're breaking bread, not doing distracting activity. A good dinner at Elaine's could really kick start a relationship. I worked in that UN secretariat, 35th floor. The places they visited would be exhausting to organize. Why the show wasn't taken on? Here's my take: At the time it was very racy for men to stay overnight, especially if a guy lied to do so on a sophomoric bet with a man she had previously rejected (stalker vibes). Manhattan women also looked for men who could afford their own apartment. Also, they made it too obvious it was Sam's looks that attracted her. Male buyers of TV time would not appreciate a young woman lusting after a man because of his muscles even though we all know it doesn't hurt to work out hard ourselves. They wanted women to want them or else a dork of a husband like in Bewitched. Larry Hagman in Jeanie did not attract her because he took his shirt off. In Three's Company, Jack was funny as hell without a scene where he took off his shirt and Chrissy and Janet melted. So the shirtless scene carrying the pilot probably would have been the death knell. That seemed to be the "gimmick." Too bad for the actress that this wasn't taken on.

Chris you must be kidding! Bernie Kopell was EVERYWHERE on classic TV comedy series in the 1960s -1970s in his younger pre- Love Boat years. He was a regular on THAT GIRL, GET SMART, DORIS DAY SHOW, BEWITCHED plus a guest on DICK VAN DYKE, GREEN ACRES, PETTICOAT JUNCTION, BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, LUCY SHOW, MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, FLYING NUN, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE and tons of others. One of the all time most popular comedy character actors!

@@jbp60 - Yeah but, did he have a series-regular-staring-role on all of these shows or did have bit-parts. I remember him from the Love Boat because he had a starring role. Also, in the 60s and early 70s, you had only 6 channels if you didn’t watch the show when it aired, you may never get the chance to see it as there was no cable television or VCRs.

@@chrisjenkins9978I think they called 'em "day" actors. Gerald McRaney gave an interview about James Garner treating even day actors like they were (so to speak) "somebody". Easy enough to check that interview.

If you watch most television from back then, you wouldn’t think women were ever even tempted by lust. In one year, TV went from double beds for Rob and Laura Petrie, to a woman seeing a shirtless man and considering her options.
