Is the Nettle Fibre Ready to Harvest Yet? (May 31, 2021)

The stinging nettles are looking tall and the flowers are forming, but is their fibre ready to be harvested yet?
Today I'm going hedge-bothering and testing a nettle each from a sunny and shady location to see if they are strong enough yet for harvesting to be used in textile projects.
These nettles were picked in Herefordshire at the end of May. Different areas may find their nettles are a little ahead or behind mine.
I now have a 'buy me a coffee' page which helps fund my ongoing research and the making of these free videos. If you'd like to support me, please visit ko-fi.com/sallypointer Thank you!

What a wonderful test! So interesting to see how plants grow around the world. Last year I bought a local wildflower book and began identifying and marking off plants on my walk. It's my own version of Pokémon 😁

Hey Sally! Thanks so much for the video - super helpful. I'm planning to try making something from nettles for the first time this year. I have a few patches of nettles I've been watching but will give them another week or so before I harvest any. I've been loving your videos. Hope you are doing ok and not pushing yourself too hard at the moment.

I'm in East Texas where we've been inundated with rain! ...with more in the forecast, by the way. Our Elder bushes are just bloomed out and gorgeous! I'm so hoping we don't get hard rains to beat the flowers off. Because of your video and comments below, I'm going to take a walk about to check our nettles! We used to have an over abundance of them but we recently purchased cows...who seems to love Nettles! I'm now having a more difficult time finding them on our few acres. lol ...I'll have to sneak over to my Brother-In-Law's land. He already thinks me a little odd. This ought to cinch it. ;-)

I tend to use dead milkweed for my cordage and/or foraged spun fiber. Since I'm not quite solid on identifying stinging nettle and I've yet to find one in my area. But the milkweed comes up everywhere in town so there's usually something good from there. I've harvested milkweed for cord that was taller than I was by around a foot and I'm 5'3". It was growing out of a crack in the pavement next to a fence with a busy road less than 10 feet away. I have tiny elderberry seedlings on my livingroom shelf, planted in a milk jug with the seed packet taped to the side.

I will have to come back and look at all your nettle videos some time, as I have loads in my garden! I was actually starting some new nalbinding socks, ( I still need to watch videos to get started! ) and got distracted by prehistoric nalbinding and saw your name! So sorry to hear your sad news. It's good to see you looking so good though, and I hope you have a full and speedy recovery. I've actually been thinking about you (and Helen) a lot in the last few days, as I've been trying to make a kirtle, and dug out my medieval dresses, to see if I could adapt the red one, made with fabric Helen gave me.

Nettles in Florida are quite ready in sunny spots the sun is quite strong here. Wild flax is blossoming blue flowers so not sure if they're ready for harvest yet.
@johnomalley5712
@johnomalley5712 3 жыл бұрын
Might I also add in case anyone is wondering. Nettles do not die off during the winter here because the ground does not freeze, they will go dormant and die back to the ground in the shade but in the full sun will go into a kind of stasis that makes the branches tender again, it is a subtropical adaptation. In winter, some of them in fact become woody and rather worthless for about 3 months out of the year. There are two types of nettles that grow here in North Florida. One imported by the Hay trade in the 17th century which brought the stinging nettles of Europe and the native which is called bull nettle which does not have edible green leaves but become quite woody and it's roots can be eaten and cooked like potatoes.

@@SallyPointer They are only native to the Americas though I imagine they've spread to England by now. Be careful though the stings on tender skin can cause contact dermatitis be sure if you do get poked to have an antihistamine or use contact treatment like baking soda or wet tobacco. They will look a bit like Lamium but larger ivy leaved lower to the ground like dandelions and full of spikey spores at midsummer. They like to grow in open fields or in barley/wheat plates. They are nick named "the devil's dandelion", "Mala Mujer" or the Gulf scorpion flower. They grow white flowers or orange in some adaptations. wear gloves touching it. The sting and pain is unforgetable.

Hi Sally! Love your videos on nettle fabric, thank you so much! Something I've been wondering for a few days now... Could fabric or cordage be made from Japanese Knotweed? It's so invasive, abundant, and SO fibrous. But perhaps too woody? I don't have the skills to test that out, but I know you love a challenge! 😄
@SallyPointer
@SallyPointer 3 жыл бұрын
It can indeed! Thankfully I've none immediately local here, though it was all over the valleys when we were based in Wales, I've seen the outer bark used for basket, inner bark for cordage and pulp for paper. Definitely worth experimenting with!

that's a pretty courageous process you have been sharing here. Once the fibers are at a more mature state, did you consider retting like it's done with linen or flax?

I was just wondering about this on my walk today! Guess I'll wait another week or two Question- I am going to pick some nettles from a VERY moist area (in a dip in the riverbank that periodically fills with water, and even with the current weather is pretty muddy) that is also in direct sun. What would you predict the fibers will be like?

Is there a point where it is too late? And how many nettles would you need for a shirt?
@SallyPointer
@SallyPointer 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely! I generally pick between midsummer and the autumn equinox to suit the way I process them, but in dryer colder areas, some people have good results with frost retted nettles, so there are regional differences. As to yield, it depends on how fine you spin I suppose, but if you work on the calculation of just under a gram of good fibre per nettle, you can probably calculate your shirt from there!

Does depend on the area, round here, if the seeds have fallen, the fibre is starting to become coarse. Fully formed seeds is a good indication of ripeness though.

I save the seeds from the nettles when they are fat and still green. Is that a good time to still get the fibres. I don't want to pick them before the seeds are ready. I normally throw the stems so will be great if I can use the same ones
@SallyPointer
@SallyPointer 3 жыл бұрын
You'll need to experiment, but I've certainly had worthwhile seeds off nettles I'm harvesting. The nettles here will be good for fibre for about another month, which coincides well with seed harvesting season.
