I Turned Stardew Valley into a Horror Game

Our beautiful, wholesome game seems to have a dark side! I've assembled a bunch of mods to attempt to make Stardew Valley as scary as possible! To my surprise, I was able to find quite a few horror themed mods, but not everything I wanted, so for the first time I'll be making my own mod!

Idea: Turn all the monsters in the mines into regular people you typically wouldn't want to defeat, say the normal baby/toddler sprites with different hats. Not demon possessed or zombified things, just normal toddlers that hurt you and you must beat into submission.

I don't understand how that fits the theme at all unless you give it narrative meaning (IE there's something to actually read into beyond "we are beating up children for no reason, oh the horror, we are truly the monster here"), like how the cursed stuff with Dove'ing your childred works. It'd also be really confusing telling all the monsters apart.

Some other ways to make it more horror is find ways to add tension one of the worst (best) things in horror is when you know something is wrong and gonna happen but you cant tell when basically jump scares, you hit a tree and instead of butterflys its crows or bats or sometimes when your walking theres a % chance of a bunch of crows flying by while screaming in the mines for ambience there coulf be whispers or screams to catch you off guard

Ooh Silent Hill is a good choice to use music from. I highly recommend playing Silent Hill 2 if you ever get the chance!

Honestly, I took a lot of inspiration from Subnautica, since it’s one of the only horror game I’ve played. Obscuring vision and having more ambient groan music is a big part of that game too!

I long for the day that there will be a mod where you can actually permanently die in the game. It's not 100%, but there's still a fraction where everytime you die, Harvey is unable to revive you and you die for good. Gives that thrill when a serpent brings your health bar just enough for you to panic.

I was going to try to somehow change the gameplay to better match a horror game, but with current mods there's not really much to work with there, other than changing a few enemy behaviors.

I want someone to mod this to where you get characters getting possessed and chase after you as the dark atmosphere gets even more intense. And a completely different story. Some new rules to be safe from demonic possessions. Putting salt circles around your crops and barn while demons everyday chip away at the salt. You could easily expand on ideas. I wish I had the ability to mod games. It would be so fun!

ANOTHER BANGER VIDEO 😭😭 Other great PS2 horror games would be some songs from Silent Hill 3 and Rule of Rose. Also Fatal Frame 1, 2, and 3 could be very good for ambient noises as that's most of the sound design for that game

I have some ideas regarding an ambience track Night sds. Crickets, howling wind, things like that. I've done the same thing with audio only games I've designed and I feel like they seem to work everytime!

This is an awesome idea! I feel like the gameplay needs to be changed in a way that makes it fit the horror genre, such as: * Monsters spawning on the farm frequently enough to interrupt your farming work * Farm and crops can be destroyed like through lightning * Emphasis on foraging, new foraging rewards

The Gallery of Time and Kings Curse tracks from the PS2 game Dark Cloud would be great Caves tracks, or something similar. I've only gotten to the bottom of the mines so far in Stardew, so I have no idea what Skull Cavern or any other dungeons are like. (I only found out that the Vault unlocks the bus stop recently.)

do you think it would be creepy to remove critters altogether? i think theres something incredibly eerie about places where even animals refuse to pass through. it has a special flavor of unsettling to it. you could even remove enemies from the mines completely, or do something similar to dont starve, where darkness inflicts damage. the mines could get darker the lower you go, and youd be dealt more and more damage as you went down more levels. and you could have something like the mining helmet from terraria so darkness doesnt hurt you? something about a foggy, entirely desolate map seems way scarier than any monster or critter or ghost or redesign. idk. the only redesign i can think of that would really really scare me is if you turned the villagers into stalker game-type characters that chase you and insta-kill you or do configurable amounts of damage. that has the potential to be terrifying. like, stardew changes genres to become a stalker thriller and there is no longer any focus on horror, your only objective is to survive

I think it would be neat for their heart events to involve their deaths. Learning about how they lost their lives and helping them come to terms with it.

I feel like what would make it creepier is just giving it a darker undertone like maybe strange events at night happening. Like maybe one night your awoken by some light falling from the sky. And some kind of creepy aliens are encountered but never mentioned again and one of your animals dies and the rest are all terrified. it just need to be unexplainable and not the main focus. Or maybe a murder happens and somebody can't be trusted. Making everything dark and scary doesn't really make it horror.

Whelp, I now have a list of mods to avoid. No hate against you or any of the other mod creators, I just don't respond well to horror, to the point my parents actually banned me from reading any horror when I was in high school, just because I would have panic attacks at night and would then get physically ill to the point where if we followed school rules, I'd have to miss a day.
