Miles of historic habitat for salmon and steelhead are reopened on Bridge Creek after a fish ladder and new bridge are installed. The small tributary to the John Day River contains highly valuable habitat for spawning fish that is pristine and virtually untouched by humans. The video was produced and narrated by David Wilson.

This is fantastic! I would love to see more and more of this. We need; desperately need to restore our planet.

Improving some fish habitat on side-steams is one thing, and probably makes everyone feel a little better given the damage done to their habitat over the years, but if you are serious about recovering the salmon, next up should be to remove all the dams on the Columbia River as that would make the biggest difference of all in their recovery. Replace the lost hydro-power with a combination of solar, wind and gas and let the Columbia run free again.

I could only wish. I have dreams that I could go back in time and see the runs before we dammed the river. 100 lb chinook June hogs jumping celilio falls

Thank you. Now please find a way to cool off the Columbia River reservoirs so the fish can survive getting to and from the ocean.

They need to let water through bottom of dams. They let it come from surface which warms water. The cold water reservoirs of the east USA have what’s called tsilwater fisheries which get the water from bottom of dams and helps keep it cool. I assume same type of idea would help the Columbia also.

All creeks and streams matter to fish passage. Don't let your local utility company tell you otherwise. Take note PG&E

Probably no-one is going to believe me but here in Germany I have seen a Steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) growing sucessfully in a shallow muddy pond. This species seems to be infiinitey more tolerant to low oxygen concentration than our own red-spotted trout Salmo trutta.

as long as there was food, oxygen, and cool water temps it is not hard to believe. the rainbow trout is highly adaptable. was there an inflowing stream?

Would have thought the fish ladder could have been designed with a more natural look and features.

Might have been designed that way so excess gravel, wood etc. can be efficiently cleaned out during the drier season. It won't bother the fish. They just need a passage with some rest stops built in. It would be nice to get an update on this river to see if it worked out.

if fish were not able to find spawning grounds before all the work why would fish use the river ? are spawning fish taken there to spawn so future runs will use these improvements ?

Jason Harper - If there are stelhead in the river below obstructions, they will move upriver when the o structions are removed.

Yes they surely will move upstream past natural barriers if given the chance and remove all smaller native inhabitants along the way, Just as they destroyed the native speckled trout populations in the Appalachian mountain range in the eastern US. Remove man made structures and leave nature to take care of itself as it was meant to be.

I wish California would learn from them. Officials of California have destroyed the king salmon fishery. In the 70s and 80s we had great runs of salmon in the Pacific Ocean. Numerous 30lb salmon and some 40lb salmon. Now you are lucky to catch a king salmon in the 20 plus pound range. Probably over 80 percent of the king salmon are hatchery salmon. A few native king salmon are caught. The fish department should allow more salmon into the rivers to breed naturally.

Go and play back 3:18 to 3:28 multiple times. Always remember this...: Consumers PAY ALL TAXES....always!! When they say the Bonneville Power pays a huge chunk of the costs involved they mean YOU pay because BP's expenses across the board for any projects are paid by consumers in the form of rate increases. So.....you pay taxes to Uncle Sam....who uses some of your tax $$ for these kinds of improvements....and those dollars are added to by BP using YOUR $$$ you pay them for power and voila...!! YOU paid for everything!! Nice job Mr. Consumer! Oh....and btw.....don't forget to buy those expensive fishing licenses and Steelhead stamps for even more $$ to the Feds.
