Salomon X Ultra Trek GTX Boots | Long Term Usage Review.

My wild camping, backpacking & hiking footwear of choice for many years has been the Salomon X Ultra Trek GTX boots.
Not many reviews or people seem to use them and the reason for this I believe is that they are not sold in many bricks and mortar shops, they seem to be an online purchase only.
My thoughts so far after having owned several pairs is that they are very comfortable, waterproof and fit to your feet like a glove. These will be my selection for my upcoming backpacking trip of the 'Cape Wrath Trail' across Scotland.
The Goretex does breath pretty well allowing sweat to escape and the pattern of the sole does provide pretty good grip but can still be a bit slippy on very steep, wet ground or wet / slimy rocks. But I have found this to be a common issue across all of Salomons outdoor footwear range to be honest.
However having worn this model of boot for many years I am impressed and would easily recommend them. These for me feel a better and more agile boot to the Salomon Quest 4 GTX that is also available.
There are reports of people having issues with the material cracking at the toe flex point and then leaking after about 6-9 months of use. This so far has not happened to myself and not seen any failure of the boots except for the sole unit wearing out.
I really do wish that Salomon would make a better compound for a lot of the boots they manufacturer which is far sticker for the wilder, wet terrain and also lasts that little bit longer. The grip performance of the sole unit is a niggle that you will see coming up again and again in the forums online.
But so far in my own personal experience they seem to wear extremely well with nearly no damage after months and months of abuse.
Because of all this they will be my footwear of choice for my upcoming return to the Cape Wrath Trail and let’s see how a new pair performs on that challenge.

As always, I appreciate your candor regarding equipment and supplies. I bought a pair of X Ultra Winter Climasalomon Waterproof 2s, and they were great for winter hiking and snowshoeing. Incredibly comfortable, warm, and light. I just purchased a pair of Salomon X Raise GTX Boots, and so far, so good. It looks like I've become a fan of Salomon! Thanks again!

I have had Salomon GTX albeit 10 years ago and they fell apart with less than 200 miles on the sole. Yet I know many people who did not have the same problem. After 50 years of this caper incliding 15 years in the forces, the best boots for all conditions I have found to be Scarpa, again many people have had a different experience. I have tried a number of boot types and brands in my time and if I had to pick one factor for feet comfort and saftey it would by find a brand of sock that work. Then stick to them. Pay extra if needed.

I have seen these Salomon's a lot and people swear by them, so I may need to invest. I have some really nice Columbia ones but the ones that are more shoe than boot and I absolutely love them but for a boot these salomon look the business. As for blisters, I used to suffer badly, no matter what boots I wore but since I bought some darn tough socks, I've not had a single problem. They're a bit pricey but two pairs is all you need. Thanks for the review, definitely will consider these. Happy hiking!

Hey good luck and atb I hope your feet are better . Try going south north and start at glenfinnan if you can’t get the ferry across . I went the traditional route and was far more challenging and rewarding than the great Glen way from other accounts . I’m hoping to get out and do some Munro’s as soon as is possible . So unfit atm so I kinda feel like I’m starting over so I need a good preseason before any through hikes . Thinking about chonzie or Vorlich double Munro up near Perth maybe even in the 26th April just for training early start . Break your boots in and get used to the back pack near full weight as well . I swear by bamboo socks a thin pair and a good walking sock on top no blisters for the whole cwt but I went slow and steady . I also used germoline at night and properly treated my feet and aired them out so they toughened by the morning . I took 4 thin pairs and 3 thick pairs of socks . The first stage although nice was a tough 20 miler to begin with I’d get a taxi from fort w to Glenfinnan or walk.thats if the ferry isn’t running to camasnagual to f. W Shout me if you have any queries . The folk in Kinlochewe were also very wary cos of Covid last year there was a bit of that on the trail was better in Ullapool tho. Oh yeah and stretch lots and rub your feet lots of stretching

@@RS.Outdoors defo that’s what I did . The sections from Glenfinnan up to Ullapool in and out of the coast is absolutely remote and stunning and very tough passes feels like two Munro’s in a day some days at least one a day . I hardly used the Harvey maps only at night and I relied heavily on my viewranger app with all the pre downloaded stages and I found that really easy but maybe relied on it a bit too much saved a lot of time tho . The sourlies and barrisdale bay sections on the coast were amazballs . Take care also from pretty much the sourlies to Sheil bridge there no easy way out so Sheil bridge is another place to get buses . Don’t be afraid to ask for a charge of your gear also most holiday makers and locals were cool if they know you are doing the cwt . Would be cool to chat to you and get up dem hills sometime . Hopefully soon eh been watching more of Murray’s videos he’s grown on me . Last thing take your time there are parts you can only go so fast so enjoy it those ultra runners I reckon wouldn’t have taken it all in ! It’s still in my thoughts the north west !

I wore Salomon x ultra 3 boots on my CWT. Really comfy and a great boot. I wore out 2 pairs before getting a bit fed up as they let in water after some good wear. They required no breaking in and I mind wearing them from new , straight onto a Munro. I have since swapped out to Lowa but still have a pair of Ultras I still wear in better weather. I also wear the female version of Fjallraven tights which are also brill for keeping yer phone handy in the pockets. I also keep stocked up with the Sawyers yellow bottle of Permethrin :-) I think you are making a good call on the Salomon. :-) Best of luck !

Ray, my preference has always been Goretex boots with some zinc oxide tape over hot spots. When the boots get wet, the next day, I wear some sealskin socks with fresh tape over those hotspots. Good point Simon. The thing with non waterproof trainers I will say is that even in the morning when you set off and the grass / ground is wet, your feet are soaking in no time. So other than boggy ground and rivers, etc at times you are getting wet feet for no reason. But maybe looking at it all wrong :) Atb

Hi Ray, no I think you’ve got it right. You are looking at a two week trip, carrying everything, even ultra marathon runners aren’t carrying that much weight for that long. The Cape Wrath Ultra is 8 days, however the competitors main kit is transported for them each day between camps with the runners just carrying an ultra light weight running pack each day. If I was doing your trip I’d certainly be wearing a boot and not a shoe.

Like you I’m not good with wet feet but I can see the advantages of lightweight footwear. Last year I invested in a pair of Altra Lone Peak boots with an event liner. So far they have been brilliant although thanks to COVID I’ve not more than 100m on them. They can be a bit slippy on wet rocks and roots but I’ve yet to find a sole that isn’t. Online reviews suggest they aren’t the most durable but in typical mushy UK conditions I’ve no issues so far. The pair in UK size 9 weighs about the same as one of the Salomens. The biggest gripe I have so far is the very soft uppers make them a pain to get on. Good luck with the Cape Wrath 2.0, I’m sure with your trusted boots you’ll be fine! @@JammyJerry no worries. Mine have been fine, like all ‘waterproof' boots and shoes they are a pig to dry when you get water inside but I’ve had no issues with water getting through the uppers. I’ve only put about 100 miles on them so far so can’t really comment on their durability and the event seems to breathe far better than any goretex shoe I’ve had but that might be down to the fact that they are just so light!

I also have a pair of leather grisport but the Salomon are so lightweight. None of these have given me blisters. My wife wears salomon as well. The only blisters she has got is in a pair of keanes. Believe it or not, I've never had a tick bite in over 40 years of hillwalking. I'm pretty paranoid about them so don't wear shorts and keep my arms up in high grass. I also wear gaiters even in summer. I lived for a while in the Baltics where they have tick borne encephalitis and know people who got Lyme disease from ticks. I really really hate the wee tick barstewards.

So to my surprize i cant find them anywhere,not even from Salomon themselves. If i can quote Deividas from Salomon customer services X ULTRA TREK is part of FW21 collection. Stocksheet shows a restock planned for November 2021 So maybe i will get a pair after all ? my 2p on the fancy vibram soles not being great on wet rocks etc. Salomon have got to make a sole that will last a year,or every tom dick and harry will be getting a new pair of boots every 11 months under warranty. They can make sticky rubber but it will wear down much quicker. Compare it to racing car/bike tyres....sticky tyres with tons of grip wear out fast.Hard rubber tyres offer little grip,but last forever. cheres good show keep it up

Same here Ray. Salomons all the way. Have you tried the Quests as well as the Ultras. I find the Quest is a bit tougher and a more rigid sole. Still a bit skittish on wet grass but they have changed the sole on the Quest now.

Nice to here your thoughts on footwear Ray. I’ll be doing my first medium trek in a few weeks . Doing the Herriot way over 3 days before doing the WHW next may. Tho my choice of boot is a slight heavier boot in the Hanwag Tatra 2. I just find them so much more comfortable. My feet just don’t feel trashed after a long wild camp with heavy pack. I do have some Solomon gtx4’s. Which are good. As for trail runners, There’s no way I could do it in my inov8

I always carry a cotton zinc oxide tape just incase I feel a blister coming on. A heavy type at least 40mm wide. Craigdon just off the M90 had some AMAZING sale prices during the break of lockdown last time. Because they don't have an online shop....they might have another sale to make up for this year's losses??

Windturbines.. like littering on an industrial scale... Last year I got some new old stock Roclite 309s, took me about 40 miles or so of break-in miles till they were comfortable., and it didn't matter what lacing configuration I used, the right shoe had heel slip no matter how tight or how I locked them. I just had to grin and bear it till the soles softened up. Took me 2 weeks of short walks till they broke in. In regards to Lyme's, the French are currently developing a vaccine, there was one in the states in the 90s that was withdrawn due to poor sales, still scratching my head why they can't just redevelop that one 🤔

Hopefully Salomon haven't fiddled with the design. I found a similar comfort from Scarpa R Evo GTX trekking boots. When the sole wore down, I replaced them with the current version and it is completely different. Less stiffness in the sole, heavier and more expensive. Several times I saw the old version on sale and thought, I should buy a couple of pairs and store them until needed, but baulked at the cost. Now I wish I had. What were the mini gaiters you showed? They looked really easy to use. I was thinking as a 'pebble' barrier when trial running. You mentioned they help with that on regular hiking boots.

Them ticks!! I got bit by one and the spot was sore for about 10 year, I suffer from muscle and joint pain, severe fatigue, 20 years after. They're no joke and seem to be increasing in numbers due to the deer population growing throughout Britain. I deffo couldn't do bivvy camps like some do... I just see that as an invite to the nasty little things. Permethrin up, keep your lower legs covered up and avoid walking through bracken at all costs.

I’ve been considering these, but wondered what weight your pack is? I prefer the look of the ultra treks, but worried they won’t provide enough support if carrying a heavy pack over a long day. The Quest elements are another option, but why do they have to make the women’s version soooo ugly? They Look like bloody space boots. Interesting video (as usual!). I do worry about your feet getting wet for a long period of time. Does the skin on feet get all soft and wrinkly when wet? And therefore proned to blisters. I suggest you tramp around in a pond or stream for a few hours to check and see. Your last series of walks with the blisters was a painful watch - and must have been really bad for you. Take care!

You have to be super careful with Gore-Tex lined boots. Once they are wet, they will take a very long time to dry out. This will also exacerbate the friction of your socks. The Gore-Tex liner will also stretch out somewhat and your feet will slide around a bit more. In a place as wet as the UK, I wouldn't recommend Gore-Tex boots to anyone.
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Fair point Craig. However from my experience over many years including long walks across Scotland, Munro Bagging, etc I haven't had a single blister with Salomon goretex boots, even with soaking feet. The several times I have tried non-goretex and trail type shoes I have had nothing but issues and blisters. But it is really what works for the individual and if it works, stick with it. Atb
