For our first getaway since the pandemic hit, we went to Salt Spring Island in BC, Canada. I got to practice some slow travel as well. If you visit, I'd highly recommend renting a scooter!

I love this video! Love the camera angles, the music, the colors, and the way the aesthetic would stop when you had to check your glass of oj hehe.

Used to live there decades ago. It was a great place to grow up back then. Dig clams, pick oysters, cook them on the beach. Go in the woods and eat delicious salmon berries and huckleberries. Go out in Walker's Hook on Danny Taylor's dingy and hunt down a few really good crabs for dinner. Even back then we knew to take only crabs over six inches in width. Or whatever the legal limit was. Danny taught us that. Take 'em home to his house and cook 'em in a little bit of water over a tiny Coleman stove on the veranda. You could not get better seafood anywhere in the world than we got back then for free. Knew where there was a spring fed creek where you could stop for really good water, the owner of it left a tin cup there in the water for anyone who wanted a drink. Knew where the best apple trees were within a one mile radius of my house which we could raid at will because the people who owned them never bothered to pick them. We stole very little of them but we went there when we were in the neighbourhood and hungry and filled our pockets because we knew that they were never going to pick them anyways. People on that island also tended to protect me because they were bigger and I was smaller. Even the ones who wanted to beat me up. It was a good place to grow up. Give you an idea of how peaceful it was back then, one day I couldn't sleep so slipped out of my bed, put on some clothes and walked down to the dock and walked down there 100 yards and walked down to actual wharf and laid down there on my backing, watching the stars and dreaming. Next second something right underneath me broke water and started breathing heavily. I launched myself to my feet in terror because I thought it must be a Russian spy and ran all the way home. Terrified, but even back then I realized, some pounding up the hill, that maybe it was just a seal or a sea lion coming up for air and maybe knowing I was there and possibly just having a joke at my expense, if you get too paranoid you are going to be a target of humour even if it is not human humour. Anyway we both got out alive. So here's to Danny Taylor and the numerous other people who made Salt Spring a really good place to live. So I guess when I was young I sort of lived a charmed life. I got to grow up in a charmed place.

Thank you so much for this video. I used to live here and I chose to leave for unfortunate personal reasons but I obviously regret leaving (I regretted leaving as I was doing it as well). SSI is actual paradise. Every day, driving to work (or just into town) I was MINDBLOWN by how insanely beautiful this place was. How is it even real? SO glad you got to visit. Hopefully you can revisit some day.
