Located in the county of North Yorkshire, and around 12 miles east of Middlesbrough, is the town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
Originally Saltburn-by-the-Sea (often referred to as, simply, Saltburn) was a tiny hamlet centred around where the Ship Inn stands today (seen around the 12-and-a-half-minute-mark). Then, in 1861, it was transformed by Quaker entrepreneur Henry Pease into a Victorian bathing resort.
The Pease family were a highly influential Quaker industrialist family based around County Durham and North Yorkshire. Their legacy includes the founding of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in the 1820s - the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. Decades later, Henry Pease was director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The story goes that he visited his brother Joseph in 1859 at his house at the neighbouring village of Marske-by-the-Sea. Returning late for dinner, he explained he had walked to Saltburn where he had had a "sort of prophetic vision" of a town with gardens.
The town was planned with other railway company directors, and the station opened in 1861. Later that year work began on the construction of the Zetland Hotel on Saltburn Road, where it stands to this day, although now converted to flats. The ulterior motive to extending the line to Saltburn was to be able to transport ironstone from the local hills to the industrial towns nearby, including Middlesbrough.
In 1869 Saltburn Pier opened. Due to the landscape of the town, it was not easy to access. A cliff hoist was constructed in 1870, consisting of a wooden cage with a capacity of 20 people who would be lowered by rope to beach level. Due to rotting timbers, it was demolished in 1883. In that same year, work began on the construction of Saltburn Cliff Lift. Completed in 1884, this funicular railway stands today as the UK's oldest operating water-balance cliff lift.
Rock vocalist David Coverdale of Deep Purple (Mark III and IV) and Whitesnake fame comes from Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
