“Plays like a character study but resolves like a mystery” is a FANTASTIC description for this movie, and 100% nails why it didn’t land with me as much as I thought it would as it was going along.

Really funny that Jacob Elordi, an australien is playing an englishman, Irish Barry Keoghan is also playing in englishman and Archie Madekwe, an englishman is playing an american. I think Actors from UK, Ireland and Australian are very good learning various accents

Elsbeth/Pike's deadpan delivery of 'I've never wanted to know anything' was the funniest line I've heard in a film in ages

I went into this movie blind today and yeah I haven't been this creeped out since god knows when. I really enjoyed the partying scenes and thought for sure something was up with the family.

One thing I will say is I loved the way this movie was shot. Especially the use odd angles and use of light during the animal party scene.

I've been terrified by Barry Keoghan since "The Killing of a Sacred Deer". I just can't get beyond that gruesome performance, though seeing some other of his parts might help.

SPOILERS SPOILERS I think that all the people who are saying they couldn’t find Felix’s motivation, or that it was changing, don’t remember Venetia’s judgement of him. He’s a moth. His greed for “shiny” things ends up consuming whatever he desires. So at first, he desired Felix, and wanted to be close to him and his aura. Then he goes to saltburn and desires the aura of saltburn. Once he knows that he can’t have Felix in the way he wants anymore, he gets rid of him. And once his status at saltburn becomes threatened, he starts to pick off the people who could ruin it for him. His avarice is what drives him to manipulate his way into whatever he desires.

This was one of my favourite second-films by a director. I wasn't disappointed tbh, maybe even like it more than Promising Young Woman because of how darkly funny it is at times.

Wow, you're getting around. I'm so pleased you got to the Roxy. It's a favourite of mine when I lived in Wellington and knowing how you love local theatres I wanted to recommend it. However my childhood was spent in the Civic in Auckland. The sky ceiling still fascinates me.

I just saw Emerald Fennell's latest movie, "Saltburn," and wow, it's an absolute knockout! A modern Great Gatsby! This film's visual richness & script brilliantly satirizes Oxford/British wealth and extravagance while uncovering the depths of its characters in a way that's just captivating. It's like watching a train wreck you can't turn away from, with each scene revealing more about what's really going on. The acting is across the board truly top-notch - absolutely one of the best ensemble performances I've seen this year. Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, and Alison Oliver shines bright. Carey Mulligan's cameo? Simply unforgettable. And Barry Keoghan? He's outdone himself, delivering a performance that's bound to get Oscar buzz. What really struck me was how the film takes themes that might seem repulsive on the surface and turns them into a mesmerizing display of artistry. The aesthetics, acting, and writing all come together perfectly, making even the most grotesque scenes somehow relatable. That bathtub scene? It had me feeling a mix of emotions I still can't quite explain. The tone of the movie is dark but compelling, with every cast member bringing their A-game. And the score? Absolutely majestic. Fennell has outdone herself with this one. After this and "Promising Young Woman," I'm convinced I'll watch anything she directs. Bro! Saw Deathly Hallows pt1 at The Embassy on opening night, along with Xmen First Class at The Roxy. Both utterly epic theatres. They are both brilliant in their own respect! Personally, love the Roxy's character, but admire the Embassy's history, having hosted so many premieres of wonderful movies. Glad you are getting a chance to visit both!

Very intriguing, Phil, lots and lots of clever stuff here and I love your Breakdown. Don’t think you’ve missed anything being sensitive so I found some of the scenes a bit difficult to watch but the way the characters were formed and fitted in to the bigger picture was masterful

Lived in Nelson my entire life. Yay for State Cinema! I remember sitting in front of there from 5am on the day tickets for LOTR Return of the King went on sale. And the excitement among those of us waiting when the film reels were delivered was thrilling.

I think something that's skipped over in your analysis of the movie is that the psychosexual desire does link back into the themes of class. Within the UK middle class there is this palpable desire, almost sexual in nature, to be upper class. In fact when it was revealed that he was not working class as present but in fact was middle class things click thematically as an excellent reveal that as someone from the UK made a lot of sense (think of the valorisation of the royals for external reference).

Hi Dan I totally agree about your Review of Saltburn. It was all too much at the same time. I have watched a few Reviews of this movie and I believe yours is spot on. It is a totally fascinating movie but I believe it is not as good as Promising Young Woman which was a very focused movie. Saltburn certainly needs unpacking. Saltburn does seem to have too many stories at the same time so it is hard to focus on the main or real story which takes away your enjoyment of the movie. Everyone is so superficial. I definitely think this movie is rushed and definitely needs a second viewing. This movie has a really creepy feel with some very off cringy scenes. It is very stylish just like Promising Young Woman. Great Review thank you.

Hey Dan, I'm wondering if you would consider doing a video that explains the process of moviemaking from start to finish? I've looked for such an explanation in books or KZfaq videos, and I've never been able to find something explains it for a layperson. I would love to know more about how all the people listed in the credits play a role in creating the final product that people see on their screens.

I loved this movie. It reminded me of "Cousin Bette". Being in the UK this resonates with me. The class system is definitely very much alive, and well. The attraction of bringing an outsider into the family circle for amusement/shock value (to be disposed of when no longer fun - like Pamela). The obsession of accessing to the rarified atmosphere of the upper class. Its all there in this movie.

I Iove seeing movies at the cinema, so much that the last few years I've been seeing 52 movies at the cinema a year. As a little tradition for myself. I travelled to another city, and said to a friend I wanted to see a movie at some of the cinemas while I was there. They said I could see a movie anywhere. I mentioned you can do most things anywhere and going to the cinema, seeing the different locations, architecture and designs is as much as of a joy, as seeing the movie. So it's so cool to me that you are enjoying the cinema still while you're abroad ❤

This seems like one of those weird movies I watch on hulu at work.

I am going to see this, just so I can know what it is actually about. I have seen a trailer for this at just about every movie I have gone to review, and the trailers are so vague, that it has grabbed my curiosity.

It comes together in the end. Disgusting that they Threw away Farleigh on the word of a stranger. Saltburn is rhe Inredible Mr Ripley 10.0

I’d say Saltburn was far superior to Promising Young Woman. I also preferred it to Anatomy of a Fall, and think it should have been nominated over that film.

The Roxy is beautiful, Peter Jackson did a great job of restoring it. Did you go to Weta when you were out in Miramar?

Completely agree and for all the same reasons. Compelling movie that ultimately comes across as shallow only because it bit off more than it could chew.

I’m really frustrated with this film because it had so much potential. However, the very predictable ending makes a lot of the film cheap and hollow. Although I ultimately wasn’t a fan of the film I do think the mood, style, and character work is really good. Just wish the director had a stronger vision for the ending.

Rilpley” overall loved it cause of the cinematic and the suspense at the end that he is responsabel for all of this. And the final scène loved how you They did not shy alway from the nudisty.

It's a brilliantly entertaining movie! Thoroughly enjoyable!

I liked this film, I would say that the problem is as you said, they were trying too many things. There are disturbing scenes that feel like indie horror, but the rest of the film sometimes feels like teen drama, dark comedy, light comedy, mystery etc, which creates these tonal issues.

I wasn't at all surprised by what Oliver was doing, as I very early on got the impression that this was kind of like The Talented Mr. Ripley, but I enjoyed it and thought it was really good.
