I laughed when they said closing the 401 is not an option. That is false. In the late 70 I was running Detroit from Hamilton and as I passed the truck stop at Woodstock, the London radio station I was listening to announced that the 401 highway from Woodstock to Windsor was closed because it was too icy for the plows and sanders to operate safely. I looked in the mirror and sure enough they had closed the highway just behind me. A cop on the CB radio told me I could back up to the truck stop if I wanted. I replied that if there would not be any other traffic to contend with I'd be fine. The trip took a bit longer than usual but I reached my destination without any problems.

Around here we don't get the snowfall as shown here in this video. But the highway maintenance does do the salt brine when snowfall is predicted. I heard in a new report the brine's purpose is to prevent the bonding of the ice/snow to the road So it can be more effectively plowed away later. It is not meant to melt the snow when the snowfall is heavy.

@@joehostile4541 Thought out quite well actually. The road salt does nothing to melt the ice after it hits -10 or below; all they're doing is wasting thousands of tax payer dollars to poison all the soil along side the roads. Local and provincial municipalities do it so idiot drivers who crash can't sue them. I used to ride a moped in the snow; if I can pull that off in the snow, there's no excuse as to why drivers can't operate their 4 wheeled vehicles properly in inclement weather. If you can't drive in the snow, you have no business endangering other peoples lives by operating a vehicle on the road, and road salt is not going to prevent such an event from happening. If they wanted to prevent crashes from happening, they could make snowmobiles road legal, or set speed limits on that highway in the snow. Anyone with half a brain could tell you that.

@@haroldrichardcheeseman4716 By the time its hit -10, the snow and ice is already cleared off because most often, when its snowing heavy, temps are higher - not really down in the -10 range. What you end up with a day or two later is dry road with salt dust on it. Fine by me. Also you cant account for idiot drivers. Its fine to say what should or should not be but one can use that logic to say that there should not be murders because people should be able to control themselves but it happens.
