I have some T5 stuff from years ago, but just got my first Current USA LED light strip. It is the older version of the pro, the thicker strip with the ramp timer pro. So far I like it and will definitely be getting more Current USA stuff. I will also be giving the Fluval Marine 3.0 a try as well.

For soft corals, Current USA LED seems like a inspired choice. It's when one goes to light demanding corals that LEDs seem just a mess. The price goes through the roof, and you'd better pay it. T5s for me!

What is the maximum tank depth that I can get positive results with the Current USA light with soft corals? I have a 54 gallon corner tank with glass lid. Measurement from the glass lid to the sand bed is right at 20". I don't have any coral in my tank yet because I'm still setting it up and cycling it. I haven't even placed fish in it yet. I'm just trying to plan ahead and get a light for when I do attempt corals. Thank you for creating such informative videos.

I had a current orbit that broke then I bought a corallife sea scape that is in the biocubes for my 10 gallon. It dosnt control color intensity individually like current did:( I believe the box said 10k but that it said whites werer that and blues and other colors always say 440 nm or something of that nature. I thought you said or maybe another youtube I watched said blues were in kelvins too. Why then do I always see the nm behind it. I have no idea how strong my corallife is. I run it at 70 percent intensity. Maybe thats to low. I am getting a fluval evo marine that is 14k soon as they are back in stock so once again I am changing lights and stressing my corals. hopefully this will be last time. Plus I am moving some into a 36 gallon with a new light maybe a ai hydra. I just wanted you to explain the kelvin and why k is never listed for blue reds ect. I assumed they werent very bright them, and was running more white than blue to give it some kick but i cut back to more blue now. I know I need to set it and forget it! You guys have any 13 gallon evo's in stock. Everywhere is sold out!

I keep my lights on 24-7, but turn the intensity way down low during the night hours (barely on) Both the fish and coral appear to recognize the day and night cycles, using this method and I've not had any issues with undesirable algae.

Hey man very good information. Although, being that the topic is on a budget please help people find a more affordable lighting system. The lighting system that you’re recommending is easily over $200. Of course, there’s incredible options you can use it for which explains why it so expensive but, when lighting is getting almost the price of the tank itself I don’t see it as a budget tank anymore.

I think t5's are a better budget and beginner option. I've got both t5's and leds and the spread, quality, and clarity of a decent t5 setup is better than the equivilent led and it's impossible to mess it up.

You mention using a 10 hour photo period. I’ve heard and seen others using as much as a 13 hour period with success. I know that off time is just as important for corals as such to “rest” but do you think that a “longer” photo period is ok if inhabitants are doing well? Or do you think that they would do better with a shorter photo period? I know there’s no perfect answer but.... Thank you.

Do chores or get some work, keep that money, spend it on a nice light (maybe a viparspectra or sb reef light which I’m gonna save up for) and repeat process for buying corals or fish or inverts. It’s an expensive hobby so just save up.

I’ve had great success with current LEDs & soft coral or shallow tanks. For more demanding lighting situations you can easily add a second strip. They are a great budget friendly starter light. They are not the most powerful lights on the market. Most customers are really happy with them. Some don’t get the speed of growth they are looking for.

No, it isn't. Kelvin and nanometers are describing two totally different phenomena (nanometers: propagation of photon energy; Kelvin: approximation of the temperature of a theoretical black-body radiator), though are indirectly related. Both blue and white light have a spectrum consisting of photons with different energies that have wavelengths, of which can be described by nanometers, and both blue and white light have a temperature (described by Kelvins) that approximates the temperature of a black-body radiator (what it might "look" like).

At no point, is someone building a "budget" tank, spending over $200 on lighting. Utterly absurd to list these as budget options. Minus live stock, I'd venture to say most people setting up "budget" tanks, are looking to spend 200 or less, on the entire setup.

cool thats great but the reason why "budget" lighting is so expensive is that you want lights that will last you a while and will let you have things other than the most simple pieces of gsp and such when going so cheap your not gonna get any growth from your coral and if ur fine with that great youve got a cheap tank! And also my guess is that you built it with a 10 gallon no skimmer no sump etc might work for you but nano tanks are incredibly hard to keep just my opinion tho.
