I'm not a fisherman but I lived on MV for 5 years in the late 1990s. I tried fishing but wasn't able to catch anything but seaweed but didn't really care. I really enjoyed going down to South Beach at dusk, my favorite time day, especially at the beach and seeing how far I could cast. It became like going to a driving range for me. Once it got dark, I'd light up the hibachi, have a cocktail on the edge of the dunes with my beautiful wife, put some hamburgers on and enjoy the best restaurant in the world. Life was good.

I have fished MV now every fall for the past 7 years. It drives me nuts to see buggies with rods no longer than 8ft, I mean everyone on the island . I thought for sure on the South side 10-11 footers would be the norm, guess not!Great work keep it up!

Steve Ganas , strange that you say that , I've been fishing the canal for years , more than 15 years . I've seen my share of 11 , 12 , 13 foot ft rods , now I understand tides and currents as well as the added size of the fish to those features and see why some would use such a set up. I fish the canal with 8 and 9 foot rods and have never had any problems landing fish , even when I go to race point in the spring I'm not casting a 11 foot rod all day , I just drove three hours ! it makes me wonder , is it self torture to cast such a long heavy rod . Light rods and heavy braid makes for easy fishing throughout the day !

Timothy Ross Dear Tim,it's not torture,it's crucifixion! 10 and 11 footers were the norm when I started fishing 47 years ago. They were meant to keep your line above the curl of the first waves breaking on the beach when bait fishing, still a valid reason to use that length today. You cast once with bait then spiked the rod and waited,so weight and length wasn't a factor so much.Continual casting with lures started the quest for lighter gear, reels as well as rods.We have the finest gear ever, use what's comfortable and effective for the kind of fishing you do.Tight lines!

The rods are being dictated by the size of baits used for me on mv its big needls, dannys at night, daters and bucktails in day so i use the big sticks if I 'm not fly fishing teasers can always imitate sand eels
