@@SaltyDavenport There used to be a wood company called Lake wood wood company, stationed at Fimenston south of Kalgoorlie, This company cut wood for 200 Plus MILES around Kal before the pipeline was built. Timber was also used to shore up underground diggings. As kids we used to climb all over the locos store there. Discovered an old straight eight car there one day, just left there to rot, would be worth thousands today. Sadly it's all gone now supper pit swallowed it all up and lake is now dry.

Thanks Darren. I would have imagined they would play some part but I guess theyre not long enough to matter too much. I always have a Yabby trap with me ;) In 5yrs (200k + kms) Ive seen 1 dead camel, several donkeys and zero wild dogs. Although I heard a pack one night.

Just spent a week on a cattle station in central Queensland. The trees out the front gate on the highway must have had at least twenty dead dogs strung up in them. It’s where dogs in the bush belong.

@@Alan.livingston hi Alan yes I know wild dogs are a big problem . I even considered becoming a dogger at one time and if I was a bit younger I would've. I love being out bush and I don't mind being on my own for long periods. I was supporting salty in being able to take our best mates with us when we go bush. Most of the dogs that become problems are from communities and discarded animals. The pure dingo on the other hand is a magnificent animal and the basis of one of the best dogs ever bread

@@brianlynch4285 Absolutely. Working dogs and companion dogs are fantastic, and anything native gets my support, Dingoes included. Personally I'm a cat person and I keep a pet one, but I've also shot more than one in the bush. Like someone once said "Weeds are just plants in the wrong place".

Good start is download Australian Topographic Maps (I'm using android) Then just download the maps offline. You can go down to big zoom levels but the amount of space required gets very large so make sure you have a but of space on your phone

Ben North cheers, I’m on apple, what I’m chasing is an app that uses topo maps scaled less than 1:250000, even if I have to manage file sizes more. I use paper maps 1:25000 but keen to see if there is an app

I don't think they ever replanted them Chris, the bush seems to be doing well though.

The woodlands have recovered well since the timber harvesting stopped. Some trees were planted around the town sites but as the trees were felled there was a massive seed bank left behind with the residue. When large rain events occur the trees take advantage and germinate en masse. Some of the tree species coppice as well, so the well developed roots allow the tree to recover quickly and regrow. I lived the first 30 years of my life between Esperance and Kalgoorlie (or Boulder more correctly!) and I love the bush around the goldfields, especially in springtime.
