Adventures of Glimt

5 жыл бұрын

Salvage of a 70 years old Norwegian traditional wooden fishing boat sunk at the pier winter of 2018-2019.
In this episode: Preparing for the pumping and refloating of the boat.
After buying a cheap fishing boat with my brother it sunk next to the pier last winter. The boat was not in great shape when we bought it - it was ready for a major overhaul. All the wood needed a touch up, and some TLC.
We wanted to try her out the first summer, to figure out what needed to be done, and what we wanted to do with her. Should we restore it as a fishing boat, or more as a recreational vessel. We had some good times with here the first summer - before it sank at the pier.
This is the story of her way back.

I never saw a sunken boat raised that way. I thought it would take cranes and barges, but a whole lot of Norwegian ingenuity, and a good dose of insanity really paid off! WELL DONE!

You gotta love free-moving water in a boat. Once the capsizing process starts, it accelerates, and stopping it gets more and more difficult with each passing second. Your successful recovery in the face of such a huge list and trim (as well as other significant factors) says a lot about your salvaging skills!

Thought the scenery looked very familiar. I spent nearly a year in Tonsberg working at the now closed Parker Scanrope factory and cycling all over Notteroy and Tjome in my spare time. As stunningly beautiful a part of the world as anybody could ever wish for. I really envy you the wonderful tangle of islands to visit. I remember taking a little landing craft style ferry across to an island where they only had bicycles and wheelbarrows for transport. I remember suggesting to the captain that he might possibly have the best job in the world! He smiled knowingly and said "Yes, and I know it!" Really miss Pepes pizza too!

It is a wooden boat that is constantly seaping water through the hull, and the pump was the only way it could stay afloat. but then the pump failed and the boats only lifeline was gone, so the seaping hull quickly took over the boat

If you don't find any holes in the hull, it may be time to consider re-caulking the seams of the hull. at the minimum, you should pull her out and do a thorough inspection of the hull just to be safe and also to make sure the hull was not damaged by sitting on the bottom.

If you guys are going to keep sinking this boat, (junior gave it away) you might mount some inflateable air bags inside the front and the rear of the boat. Then you just hook it up to an air compressor to at least bring it to the water line, pumping will be easier if all the opening are above the water. It is amazing how interesting this is when it not happen to me. Good job.

Seems that something was not shown here. If the boat was already under the level of the sea's surface no amount of pumping would float it. The re-flooding or pour in rate is higher than the pumping rate. Doing that without lifting the boat higher initially is very difficult. Maybe the tide was what actually made it work? If the tide dropped below the re-flooding height then maybe the pumps were able to just get a run on it?
