I didn't link the voice to SJ until people referenced the movie "Her" that I haven't yet seen, even though I watched the demo multiple times and have heard SJ's voice before. Even if it's her cloned and modified voice, it's still modified enough to be considered a different voice. Her articulating the situation the way she's doing it, encompassing the whole AI atmosphere rather than her personal conflict with Sam Altman, only, and even going as far as to call for legislation, represents a threat to AI potential. I do believe that a person's likeness should not be used to defame them or misinform other people on the internet. I also believe that if someone intends to make profit of someone else's likeness, they should ask them for permission and share the profit with them if they agree. However, I believe people should be able to do with a person's likeness and voice whatever they want, in their own privacy, locally on their device. And because of her misdirected influence, I fear AI will be feared even more so than it already is, leading to overlegislation, ever-tightening restrictions and surveillance in the name of safety. It should be noted that although it is easier with AI, people can already take whomever's likeness and use it however they want in privacy with the rub of a brush on a tablet or a piece of paper. In the future, I would like to create content of whatever genre I want easily on my computer for my personal entertainment, and I don't want the government telling me what I can and cannot create with AI.

The whole situation is hilarious, because the bottom line is that OpenAI on top of it's groundbreaking tech that on it's own stands to almost certainly monopolise the agentic AI space for the near future, the whole getting sued saga and having a voice like Sky blow up the "Her" comparisons........ is quite simply PR liquid gold. Everyone from the industry to content creators to now the general media consuming world (thanks to Scarlett's next legal venture), is talking about OpenAI....... win or lose the court case, droplets in an ocean of cash that stands to be made. And as if to drill the decision home...... they make it twice as fast and half as costly. ^ straight out of the billionaires playbook.... and we're the ones being played ;)

What I'm wondering is how much did they modify the actress' original recording, or mimic, to match that of Scarlet's performance in the movie "Her". And I wonder if it goes to trial and OpenAI gets burned, does that then open them up for the publisher of that movie to lawyer up since that performance is theirs to distribute. Seems like a PR stunt to form prosocial bond with the users backfiring.

OpenAI is a scummy company. I really dislike them. They are scammers, too. It's a shame their flagship models have no real competition though. Give it a few months and we'll get there.

It's really depressing seeing these "AI bros" defend OpenAI. They used her voice signature without her consent, straight up. OpenAI has mislead, played with information and straight up lied before and will continue to do so. Come on, the dude that holds almost full control of the company is known for being power hungry, abusive and to not follow safety rules, this is exactly the kind of childish thing he'd do, there's no other reason he'd ask her, and tweet "her", and keep the "real" voice actress anonymous.

On this particular issue, I'm not on your side. They wanted the 'her' experience. She acted on the movie, so they tried to hire her. She didn't accept it, so they search one that matched the profile. For the 'character', not the actress. She doesn't 'own the rights' on the voices of every person in the world that may resemble her. And, to be completely honest, I'm glad she denied, this voice actually sounds a lot better than hers.

The courts should directly subpoena the voice engineers from OpenAI and ask them if they used her voice and the the voice from Her movie to fine-tune the sky voice or not? If they only used it with training data along with millions of hours of other voice data, then it's fine, and they're not guilty. But if they used her voice during the fine-tuning of the sky voice, then they should be fined heavily and the company should be investigated. 😡
