Sam Hall (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
MY LINKS: linktr.ee/Seth...
"Sam Hall" is an old folk song about a unrepentant criminal condemned to death for robbing the rich to feed the poor. Before the 1850s, it had been called "Jack Hall", after an infamous English thief, who was hanged in 1707 at Tyburn. Jack Hall's parents sold him as a climbing boy for one guinea, which is why most versions of the song identify Sam or Jack Hall as a chimney sweep. This version, the Irish version from Paddy Reilly, refers not to Tyburn but Cootehill in County Cavan, Ireland.
Lyrics:
Oh my name it is Sam Hall chimney sweep, chimney sweep
Oh my name it is Sam Hall chimney sweep
Oh my name it is Sam Hall and I′ve robbed both great and small
And my neck will pay for all when I die, when I die
And my neck will pay for all when I die
I have twenty pounds in store, that's not all, that′s not all
I have twenty pounds in store, that's not all
I have twenty pounds in store and I'll rob for twenty more
For the rich must help the poor, so must I, so must I
For the rich must help the poor, so must I
Oh they took me to Cootehill in a cart, in a cart
Oh they took me to Cootehill in a cart
Oh they took me to Cootehill where I stopped to make my will
Oh the best of friends must part, so must I, so must I
Oh the best of friends must part, so must I
Up the ladder I did grope, that′s no joke, that′s no joke
Up the ladder I did grope, that's no joke
Up the ladder I did grope and the hangman pulled the rope
And ne′er a word I spoke, tumbling down, tumbling down
And ne'er a word I spoke tumbling down
Oh my name it is Sam Hall chimney sweep, chimney sweep
Oh my name it is Sam Hall chimney sweep
Oh my name it is Sam Hall and I′ve robbed both great and small
And my neck will pay for all when I die, when I die
And my neck will pay for all when I die

Your favorite fan is back!!! Thank you for trusting me to share such vulnerable pieces with me… and opening up, even in such subtle ways that most people don’t notice. I do💚💚💚 and I appreciate you. You open up like a magic marker pic. You shine a light on a little piece of your heart every time, and a beautiful splash of color is revealed all of a sudden. You are a beautiful soul. Please keep shining and coloring.

"Sam Hall" is an English language folk song about a unrepentant criminal condemned to death (Roud Folk Song Index #369) for robbing the rich to feed the poor. Prior to the mid-19th century it was called "Jack Hall", after an infamous English thief, who was hanged in 1707 at Tyburn. Jack Hall's parents sold him as a climbing boy for one guinea, which is why most versions of the song identify Sam or Jack Hall as a chimney sweep.

One of my favorite versions but its not 'And I've been robbed both great and small' He was a robber.... so it's 'Ive robbed both great and small' Check out the story of Jack Hall of over 100 years before this one was written.

Yup I’m aware, I like “I’ve been robbed,” by the system of oppression that pushed him to commit his “misdeeds” in the first place.

@@sethstatonwatkins Yes Seth but the problem with that is that it mentions the poor, who surely didnt lead him down that path. That's why I thought it sounded unintentional. Sorry. By the way I didnt mean to come across as patronising. I genuinely meant to direct you to a facinating period of the history during the hangings conducted at 'The tyburn tree' 'Gallows' Over 60,000 people hanged there. Criminals such as Jack Hall were imprisoned at Newgate jail and paraded through the streets in a horse and cart for 3 miles to the Gallows, down Holburn hill (which is now Oxford Street) When at the Gallows, they were placed beneath, the rope was put around their neck and the horses whipped leaving them to hang. So for instance they wouldnt have groped up a ladder unless metorphorical of course. The whole thing was very grusome with lots of interesting things. For instance the Hangman used to sell the rope after the hanging and the crowd would buy small pieces as souviniers (hence 'Money for old rope') I hope you get chance to look at it all on 'You tube'. I was going to sing Sam Hall with my group 'Stonesthrow' but in the end l decided to write another version of the song 'Jack Hall' with the same tune and some similarities in the lyrics but with the story behind the experience for the condemmed being highlighted. All the best Tony
