I am a shrink. (PhD not MD.) I used to get asked all the time what I thought of the various medications that my (predominately white young male clients) were taking. Though some should be on medications in my view most were for various forms of very loose diagnosis of ADHD and lvl 1 ASD. 90% of the time the parents would say it is to prevent disruptions in class. I would ask 'do you think it is typical for a 12 year old boy to not want to spend 8 hours a day in a classroom'? The conversation would go from there. I am proud to say I now am the director of my own company with a 95% positive reporting rate (industry standard is ~60%) and the number of kids we have gotten off meds by just giving young people a creative and social outlet is wonderful and terrifying.

I had an amazing mum. She fought for me tooth and nail through adhd. Didn’t let me start taking any medication for it until I was 17-18 and stopped me taking it when she saw any symptoms she didn’t like. Encouraged my creativity and let me do anything I wanted. Stopped me from smoking weed and getting drunk when I was 20. Pulled me into the gym and communities. Didn’t stop feeding me good quality organic food. Hearing these stories suck because I had a staunch supporter the entire way through. I wish you all had a person like that in your life. You deserve better.

People still think giving drugs to kids is acceptable, it should not be normal. When it is mentioned, people’s first reaction should be “wow everyone involved should be serving time” but no. People blindly listen to authority’s figures without a second thought.

my mother literally kept me from the outside world, shot down any attempt at me trying to express myself (like career interests I expressed in), and threatened me if I did take those paths. Her and my stepdad found out I watched a “P” video when I was like 12. So they grounded me for over a year, and would not let me leave my bedroom for that entire period for any reason other than to eat or go to school. I had zero contact with the outside world for over a year. so lots of social aspects grew to terrify me. not that I wasn’t already introverted. all I had to keep my mind occupied for a year were the few books in my room. Re-read the first Harry Potter more times than I can count. When I was 13-14, there was an incident a few weeks before Christmas wherein my stepdad was blackout drunk, and got arrested for the attempted murder of myself and my little sister. Chased us around with a machete, yadda yadda. Barricaded himself and threatened the cops, didn’t get hurt somehow though. My mom let me stay home from school for one day after that. Then after my day off, everything was back to normal like nothing happened. My mother constantly told me I “didn’t have to testify”, so I didn’t. That resulted in him not being charged. Because none of the victims testified. My mother did that so that my two youngest siblings (his children) would have a father and never find out. Thanks mom. She sends them off to stay with him every other weekend. When I was 14, my mom wasn’t happy with my report card. I didn’t fail, but she wasn’t happy. So she went through my devices, and found my girlfriends nudes. She was my age. My mother sent them to herself, and blackmailed me under the threat of sending them to her parents if I didn’t break up with her over text immediately. I was restricted to my bedroom for another year. By the time I was 15, she came home one day and saw that I forgot to put a single small container in the dishwasher. So she kicked me out. I would’ve been on the streets if my girlfriends parents didn’t love the hell outta me and take me in. I lived with them for maybe a year and a half. Somewhere through that, I reached out to my real dad. I hadn’t met him before. My mom ran away with me when I was 4. When he showed up, he was high on meth. But we still chatted regardless. that girlfriend started sleeping with other guys, so i left and stayed with my dad for a bit. then my mom took me back in. I was with her for under a month before she kicked me out again. She randomly texted me one night about how me and my siblings are so ungrateful. Completely unprompted. So I responded with something along the lines of “maybe we would be if we actually had anything to be grateful for & our child support didn’t just go to your pockets & dumb shit you don’t need”. She was getting thousands a month from child support alone, yet we never had food in the house. To this day I’m 6’2 and 125 pounds. My growth is absolutely stunted. I packed my bags immediately after that because I figured she’d kick me out. She didn’t reply. But she busted into my room at 2am and told me to pack my shit. Which I had done already. She didn’t like that. So she woke up everyone in the house and started telling them in “losing my mind and going crazy”. She dumped me in the most dangerous area of the city my dad was in, at 3am, with a massive hockey bag on my back. thanks mom. I had to find my dads apartment and chuck pinecones at the window, hoping they’d notice. things didn’t get better from there but im gonna stop typing now. My parents put me and my siblings through hell, and whenever she brings her little friends over, she always feels the need to point out to them how “None of her kids smile anymore” like it’s funny to her, as if it makes HER look good or something.

I’m the person that wrote this. I just turned 30. I got a few revenge conversations in with my folks so they know they fucked up. I have a handful of failed businesses and I still live at home and life is pretty good with them tbh. They’re willing to keep helping me as recompense, but I pay my own bills and do all the chores at home. I’m finally settling into a groove with a sales job. I’m too scatterbrained to be an actual owner so I’ve given up on contracting business, at least for now. But nonethless money is starting to get good and consistent and I’ll be finally caught up as an adult thanks to the internet and relentless self-improvement. I’m struggling with high functioning mini-addictions because the vyvanse fried my dopamine and I only feel “normal” when I’m a little drunk or high on something. But I’m working toward figuring that out. Still I am consistent every day and perform and am pretty happy, again thanks to relentless self improvement, staying in therapy, and not being a pussy. My dad wasn't around, always working. When he was home he was so grumpy from working all the time it was suffering to be around him. My mom went to work again as soon as I was able to look after myself and my little sister. But she didn't teach anything to actually be on my own. They just expected me to grow up and go to work but I grew up watching them at work all day and miserable as a result. I have a relatively high IQ and struggled through school because I thought school was a waste of time. Ended up joining the Marines, which was a mistake. I'm only now in my mid 30s really figuring out how to navigate life and what I want to do with my time. My parents birthed me, gave me what I needed to survive and nothing, then got upset when I turned 18 and had no idea what was going on.

Anyone else think these issues are only going to become more prevalent because of kids whose formative years were during lockdowns, and their parents put them into daycares where they had to wear masks, and the "caregivers" were in masks, too? I have friends who are convinced their barely-five-year-old has ADHD and speech delays, and they're chomping at the bit to get her analyzed so they can put her on the same drugs her dad takes.

Just today I saw a post on Twitter by a woman who took her daughter to Build-a-Bear Workshop and she didn't let her daughter get the bare that was rainbow colored. It wasn't more expensive or anything like that, the mom just didn't want her daughter to have a teddy bear that looked "gaudy." Now the replies were filled with people calling her a shitty mother, obviously, but what really bugged me is the amount of people who worked at Build-a-Bear (or similar "make your own"-thing shops) who ssid that is a regular occurrence. Apparently its very common for people to take their kids to a place to make their own stuffed animals and veto their kid's choices not because what they wanted was expensive, but because it clashed with the parent's personal taste. And of course, the woman's response was a long the lines of "well I guess I'll give in to all of my daughter's whims," which is such a bitch move. We all know women who say shit like that. They get called out for being terrible and then go all reacto ad absurdum in an attempt to maintain some semblance of rationality, even though they never had it to begin with.

I'm not Christian, but I think this is the OG reason why they're always going on about forgiveness. You have no choice about the treatment you experienced in the past, but you do have the choice to forgive and move on as the first true act of personal agency you ever take. you don't have to forget, you should hang on to the lessons you've learned, and you may never get an apology, but you can choose to forgive and move on.

I quit energy drinks and all caffeine and I had 5 days of terror. Pure "I am dying" terror, and racing heartbeat didn't help that psychology when you are just sitting there not moving and thinking you are dying.I thought I really had fucked my brain over permanently. Apparently the anxiety from caffeine withdrawal is especially hard when paired with sugar. Luckily it all went all away, and now zero anxiety whatsoever. As a child I was always the smartest kid in my class, was in the gifted program, read at a 6th grade reading level in 1st grade but was always "disruptive" to my other classmates. Looking back I can definitely see that I was a little hellion that didn't get enough attention from my alcoholic parents but I don't think that's an excuse to put a 10 year old on speed pills. Fast forward 14 years and my brain has been whammo clobbered by the Ritalin and whatever other stuff I ended up experimenting with after thinking "well these pills make me feel funny, maybe acid make me feel funny." I think everybody involved with the peddling of amphetamines to children needs to be put through the legal wringer, lawsuits abound, however I know they will never see justice as the people responsible either roll heavy with politicians and the like or have plausible deniability. Either way I fantasize daily about a life where I wasn't systematically sabotaged by my parents, doctors and school system.

You have to be an adult and move on + take responsibility for yourself but at the same time, the negligence from your parents probably did affect you in a very serious way that could haunt you for the rest of your life. So recognize the damage from your upbringing and make peace with it. Forgive your parents but learn to identify areas of weakness your parents failed you in and forgive yourself when you fall short of your expectations. If your parents didn't teach you a strong work ethic for example, work on it. If you fail, remember you aren't starting on the best foot and forgive yourself.

My brother is 28 and is still having problems focusing without it. All because my parents couldn't be bothered.

All you need to know about ADD/ADHD is the teachers and counselors are compensated, and taken to lavish hotel parties for each child they get on the meds. It's very easy to fix "ADD" make the kid run until exhausted twice a day. It's VERY unnatural to be locked in a room being still 8+ hours a day. It's not ADD, it's just energy.

My parents had me taking fluoride pills for a few years as a kid. Suddenly it makes sense why I was so compliant with them despite getting beaten and mistreated all the time. After the military I stopped drinking from the tap because I got into health improvement and stumbled upon an article about teeth health and fluoride. Waking up slowly after years of being fluoride brained was horrifying. All the horrific things you put up with, all the feelings that just sat there bubbling but unable to be expressed come out like it's your first time popping a stiffy. I'm honestly surprised I didn't off myself which I considered multiple times. The worst part though is they never gave it to my brother and he grew up pretty normal. He's now a narcissistic golden child and my parents worship him.

Seems like this is a hot take, but kids don't owe their parents anything. For selfish reasons (or none at all) and without considering the implications and consequences, people create entire new humans without consent. I've had the chance to bring this up to a couple different people and it always makes them weirdly defensive, as if I'm trying to ruin their fun or control their lives -- the irony being completely lost on them. This is highlighted by people with genetic disorders who think "oh well, my kids will just have to deal with it". Parents play God with none of the qualifications and feel entitled to it.
