The enduring musical journey of Sam Lightnin' Hopkins began on a cotton farm in Centerville,Texas in 1912. He was drawn to the music he heard played by an older brother. After meeting up with Dallas bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sam left the hardscrabble life of the Texas cotton fields, determined to play his way to better circumstances.

This is and has been my very favorite blues song. Despite all of the great blues songs that I have ever heard, I don't see that ever changing. Goosebumps every time.

I know that this was video represents a lot of other families also. My grandfather on my father's side was born in 1854. I found his name on a census roll listed as a worker on a farm in Arkansas. I was struck by the truths and the pain felt in this song. His music does indeed touch the soul.

I am a white Scottish lad born Christmas 1980 I'm 40 now and lived thru the 90s rave and dance music scene which I think everyone did for a time...but deep inside all that speed and fastness I heard the blues and my soul was hooked forever...the doors BB king buddy guy John Lee hooker And SRV...this is what stuck real music real soul...I hated the nineties for my childhood but loved them also because the sadness that came from that time is what makes me feel the blues now or hear them in my heart...life is tough then you die...but heaven awaits every clean soul I believe

I somewhat recently got into the blues and I absolutely love it. In researching for blues musicians I came across Lightnin, and the first time I heard his music I told myself "YES, this is how I always imagined the blues". And now he is my favorite blues man. Amazing.

"poor momma sittin' down with a pencil and paper, figurin' out every dime that the family made" Damn this hits home hard. The blues always resonated with me as a dirt poor white man, I think this genre of music transcends race, I think it speaks to all of those at the bottom of our social hierarchy. If you've ever faced poverty, desolation, hunger, hardship or hopelessness then this music seems to capture an essence of those feelings and memories.

In the fifties 100 pounds of cotton sold for 3 to 4 dollars. Now in case you didn't know that is a hell of a lot of fluffy white balls. You'd work from early in the mornin' dragging a 9 foot cotton sack behind you. You work in the mornin' so dew's still on the plants and it makes 'em weigh more.

I used to have a live version of this on tape back in the 80s from some now-obscure anthology, As I recall Lightnin' was complaining about the sound while playing, there was no bassist, and there was an extra verse about getting mixed up in some gambling game. Don't have it now, but it must be out there somewhere, good luck in tracing it.
