He began his basketball journey late, but found himself spending 4 years with the North Carolina Heels, playing alongside future NBA Greats like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith. During Perkins’ time at Chapel he was routinely one the ACC and NCAA’s best players and would even win the 1982 National Championship. He would win a Gold Medal with Team USA in the 1984 Olympics before embarking on one of the most consistent NBA careers of all time. He began with the Dallas Mavericks as a great starter playing alongside guys like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper, where he play a big part in the franchise’s first Conference Finals Appearance. He would join Magic Johnson and James Worthy In Los Angeles and help the Lakers to a 1991 NBA Finals appearance before losing to the Chicago Bulls. A year and a half later, he would be traded to the Seattle Supersonics, where he would become one of the most lethal deep threats in the league, as he really helped open up the floor for Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. During his time there, he would make another NBA Finals appearance when the Sonics lost to the Bulls in 1996. His last few years would be spent with Reggie Miller’s Indiana Pacers, but even into his mid 30s he retained a role on the team, and would make his last NBA Finals Appearance in 2000, when the Pacers lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. He would walk away from the game soon after that, as one of its best role players and winners, and he did it all while barely breaking a sweat, as only “Big Smooth” could do.

"Big Smooth" Sam Perkins he was the 1st PF/C stretching out, consistently hitting the 3 Ball, him and Bill Laimbeer (that'd be a good one Bill Laimbeer) Perkins was a underrated player, always a good rotation player! Can we get Joe Johnson or Antwan Jamison!

Majority of the starters on those Tar Heel teams were criminally overshadowed especially in hindsight now with Jordan being so synonymous with that program. James Worthy, Kenny Smith, and Brad Daugherty should get videos at some point soon I hope

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. (These show where, when and HOW I grew up) To this day, I still remember the summer of 1995, when we traded Kendall Gill for Hersey Hawkins, George Karl talked about how "Hersey, Detlef and Sam will stretch the defense," giving Shawn Kemp more room to operate in the post!

He had a solid career in the NBA for 17 seasons. He also was a three-time college All-American, was a member of the 1982 national champion North Carolina Tar Heels, and won a gold medal with the 1984 United States men's Olympic basketball team. He played with the likes of future NBA greats such as Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Brad Daughtery. He was known by the nicknames "Sleepy Sam", "Big Smooth", and "The Big Easy"

Big Smooth is the reason that I became a Sonics fan. I had just moved to Seattle and didn't have an NBA team, and the turnaround jumper that he hit in Game 7 against the Rockets over Otis Thorpe in the WC Semis made me fall in love with the team. The way that he demanded the ball and waived his arm to tell everyone to clear out...Big Smooth knew that he was going to ice it. When he released the ball, the crowd went dead silent while it was in the air, and then erupted once it went through the net. Once Payton and Kemp because superstars, the Sonics were unbeatable when Perkins would catch fire from three point range.

Perk aka Big Smooth was fun to watch because he could clown a guy without even looking like he was trying at all and if he got hot from deep you really had a problem. Very under rated rebounder and defensive player too and was a huge value to every team he played on. He was very clutch when you needed a big shot as well.

Another awesome mini-doc. I didn't know much about him until the Lakers picked him up. I remember in one Lakers/Mavs game before that, Sam flattened someone when they were driving to the hoop. Can't remember if that was a regular season game or in the playoffs but it was probably in that 7 game series. But, what a solid contributor he was for the Lakers. Watching this, it occurred to me that his game would still translate well to todays game and he would probably be making 30 mil+/year. Was watching some interview with Dean Smith and they talked about that Jordan shot in the championship game. Smith said that even if Jordan missed that shot, Sam had the area cleared out under the basket and would have got the rebound and bucket.
