Rivers is one of the great jazz musicians from the early start long ago with bros as Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter. Absolute confirmed by this pretty rare footage, a gem for the hardcore jazzfans, enjoy all! (Rael Wesley Grant on Bass and Darryl Thompson on guitar and Steve Mcraven on drums)

I met Sam Rivers and his wife Bea at their place on 24 Bond street in Manhattan in the 1970s. They were a magical couple. I will always remember the warmth and joy that glowed from her smiling face. This endearing song is his love for her and I can see why he loved her so.

Man, I don't know what the guitarist is doing these days but I took a few lessons from him back in the mid-seventies when I was a teenager. His nickname was "Boobe" or "Booby" back in those days and in his late teens. Nicest guy in the world. I first checked him out at a local talent show, he was playing a lot of Mahavishnu Orchestra anf other fusion stuff back then. I asked him if he gave lessons and so he invited me over to his home in Ozone Park, NY for a few lessons and didn't want a dime from me. He showed me a lifetime of info, some of which is still a little difficult for me to play today and I'm 60 now. He could play and sight read anything from classical to modern bebop. He got me into Pat Martino and a few others. I'll always be grateful to those lessons that steered me in a right direction.

Mr. B, love your story about the guitar player, I have a similar one about a repair gentleman at a music store. One day I stopped by and saw him doodling on jazz and I go wow! A very unassuming person, but he had major chops, and I asked him for tips, and he liked me and gave some that still help me to this day, blessed those musically educated guys that know so much and are willing to share it. This gentleman is a fine player!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎼🎷🥁🎸🎸🎶🎵🎼

Not to keen on «athletic» jazz. This is not the case here. Rivers' solo is thoughtful and rich. He's listening to what he's playing.

Running up and down the keys or the keyboard as fast as possible. Stressing speed instead of musicality. Why play all the notes, just play the nice ones. That's what Miles meant. I remember a show in Quebec City (The Clarendon) in which the young sax was trying to conceal lack of ideas by speed. The pianist he was accompanying talked to him between the sets. In the next set, he was more restrained and more interesting musically.

Sam Rivers, in this song, uses a different conception of musical space than the bebop (in bebop chromatisms are foundamental), here you have more space, he uses strange chord progressions; and for improvvisation he uses common tones as glue, to make the solo to work. I can not give a more precise explanation because I studied in a hurry this topic
@rossminet
@rossminet 8 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, some musicians play bop while closely monitoring and expanding their flow of notes. But too often some will simply run up and down the keys, without meaning. Some do it sometimes and some always. I think there are many overrated artists who run up and down the keys aimlessly. That's not what I felt with River's performance.
@frenklimyrto
@frenklimyrto 8 жыл бұрын
agree on everything, but we must understand that there are no perfect musicians, a great jazz musician can be hired for a jig and be in a bad mood, he may have slept little, or is forced to play something that is not in his interest; to please the public, or may have other human problems. This performance seems very nice, but if you listen to the album "Fuchsia Swing Song" will find that the solos are much more "sophisticated"

While it's good playing especially from the sax, the guitar tone is weak and thin. I don't understand why you would choose this tone to play with. The solo playing seems to be based on mainly on John Coltrane on sax and while the guitarist Pat Metheny and additional things from other players styles. Not original, but hey few are.
@viceroy_raygun
@viceroy_raygun 7 жыл бұрын
intervalkid Well, he's playing a solid body with single coil pickups, so he's definitely going for more of a fusion sound with a strat like tone. I see nothing wrong with that.
