Does James 2:24 Contradict Justification By Faith Apart From Works? • Does James 2:24 Contra...
Sam Shamoun is a well know KZfaqr and apologist to Muslims. In many areas he has fantastic bible knowledge but in other areas he is really messed up. He used to be an evangelical Christian but now he is in the Orthodox Church and he believes all sorts of crazy stuff. But the most egregious belief he has is his works based gospel. He believes that we are saved by faith but he defines faith to mean "faithful obedience". This then makes a mockery of the gospel. Paul says we are saved by faith apart from works. But if faith means "faithful obedience" then all of a sudden we are saved by our own works. It makes no sense.

When he says 'faithful obedience' he doesnt mean 'perfect' obedience, he means the obedience is born out of faith in Christ, which it should be. Sam Shamoun vehemently opposes Sola Fide which means justification by faith alone. He thinks that it's a "recent protestant doctrine" that is "from the pit of hell" per his own words. Faith alone is what saves you but if your "faith" is merely words, then it isn't faith in the first place.

He was not saying : Faith + Works. You can't walk away from a man who is suffering and think that you are doing a good deed. We are Not saved by works either. Can we just simply sit without helping anyone and say that we have faith in Christ? No. That is correct. If we love God, we will AUTOMATICALLY work. But if we WORK with an intention to go to heaven. It is work based salvation. But if we Have Abundant FAITH, we will AUTOMATICALLY work. The word AUTOMATIC is important. It is the fruit of the spirit. When we are having faith, we will do works. But if we do works and thinking that: "I am obeying GOD." Then, we have to investigate our heart whether we are doing those works to get to heaven or doing it because we love the LORD? It is very simple to understand. God is sacrificial. So, when we do works and think that work is necessary for salvation. Then it means we are NOT doing works because we are SACRIFICIAL like GOD. Instead, we are doing those works to get to heaven. ( That is not SACRIFICE ) SACRIFICE = FORGETTING about our desires. ( So, we cannot do works to earn heaven. )

Great Video Caleb! well done man. I think when Sam says "Faith IS Faithfulness" he is preaching a kind of works-based salvation - no way around it. Maybe a few additional points to yours: Romans 10:9 "If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." This text shows that genuine faith is not merely a mental assent or simply a profession, but there is a possession element to genuine faith. That is to say, faith takes hold of Christ. So genuine faith is both a profession "declare with your mouth" and a possession "believe in your heart". I am saved not because I prayed a prayer once upon a time (Though that is an expression of my faith), but because I believe now in that Christ is MY saviour and has risen from the dead - and so take hold of him through faith. When Sam says "Faith IS Faithfulness" he immediately shifts the focus from the sufficiency of Christ to our own performance (works). Whether he intends to or not. But my "faithfulness" will always be imperfect, and if I cling to it for my assurance I will be discouraged (those who claim to be without sin are liars). But when I look to Christ and cling to him in FAITH (not faithfulness) then my assurance is secure - because although my faithfulness is imperfect - Christ is not. James is evaluating whether we had living/genuine faith to begin with - he is not saying Faith is Faithfulness. I have heaps of respect for Sam - sad he said what he did in this one.

It's great to see how Shamoun plays the James White card...'The Greek says...' More sophistry from Sam Shamoun. There are a few Bible passages that, at first glance, seem to teach salvation through faith plus works. One such is Shamoun's choice verse...James 2:24, which APPEARS to say that justification is by faith plus works: “You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.” This apparent problem is solved by examining the WHOLE of James’ argument in his Epistle. James is refuting the idea that a person can have saving faith without producing any good works (see James 2:17-18). Genuine faith in Christ, James says, will produce a changed life and result in good works (James 2:20-26). James is not saying that justification is by faith plus works, but that a person who is truly justified by faith will have good works in his or her life. The works are an outward show of genuine faith in Christ (James 2:14, 17, 20, 26)-and it’s that outward show that “justifies” the believer in the sight of other people. This ties in, very nicely, with Matthew 7:16, "You will know them by their fruits [deeds, actions, results - which are the consequence of their relationship with God and their salvation, in Christ]. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they?"

You are correct, it clearly isn't based on fear, works or anything other than the mercy and grace of Christ. It is by faith and choosing to be baptized that we follow Christ, look up to him for all things and believe on his name in all things...James chapter 2 opens up comparing a rich man and a poor man, and that's exactly what 2:24 is about, this whole chapter is about those prosparity preachers vs. the poor essentially. One wouldn't put themselves over others essentially, not a cause for salvation, so yes, Sam is off big time here in this regard. Romans 4:5 King James Version 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Luke 23 39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. Animal Sacrifices never took away sins, only Christ has, animal sacrifice was just to remind us of the law and to help us follow them. Hebrews 10 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. 8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector

Sam is correct in what he showed; faith means faithfulness pistis is the Greek word means you’re gonna be faithful, that’s the proper hermeneutics here! Too many Christians think they’re pleasing God by having faith without works or That God is schizophrenic when he gave 613 Commandments and zero in the New Testament? No, there’s at least 1000 Commandments in the New Testament we are under the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2, first Corinthians is 9:21 This may sound strange to you, but that’s because the hyper Grace That’s floating around everywhere. Romans 12:1-2 Offer your body as a living sacrifice it’s only reasonable that you do that. So it’s unreasonable if you don’t do that. That’s what that text says Read Revelation two and three, and see how hard Jesus comes down on works and what he’s microscopically looking at ! Titus is three chapters long, six times it says to do good works and right in the middle of Titus is Titus 2:11-12 “the grace of God Has appeared all men , teaching us to say no to ungodliness!” So the grace of God is mam actively teaching people, so that’s a different definition of grace! also people can frustrate the grace of God Galatians 2 Says, they can fall from the grace Galatians 5:4 Hopefully you’ll study this and look at this and come out of hyper grace !

First off, I'm not a fan of some of the things Sam says and how he says them. However, you are not being just with Sam in this video. To start, I noticed that you conveniently read only the beginning portion of the definition of pistis in the Vine's dictionary. It goes on to say: "The main elements in "faith" in its relation to the invisible God, as distinct from "faith" in man, are especially brought out in the use of this noun and the corresponding verb, pisteuo; they are (1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God's revelation or truth, e.g., 2 Thessalonians 2:11,12; (2) a personal surrender to Him, John 1:12; (3) a conduct inspired by such surrender, 2 Corinthians 5:7 . Prominence is given to one or other of these elements according to the context. All this stands in contrast to belief in its purely natural exercise, which consists of an opinion held in good "faith" without necessary reference to its proof." Pay attention to number 3 especially. This agrees with John in 3:36 where faith is equated with obedience; this also agrees with James when he says that faith without works is dead (btw, the term "faith alone" is only found in James, where the whole phrase is "NOT by faith alone"); this all also agrees with Paul when in the first and last chapters of Romans he refers to "the obedience of faith." What Sam is saying is not works-based, for if it were he would be saying that we earn our salvation through our works. But what he is saying, as the Scriptures teach, the faith in Christ that saving is a faith that obeys God. No doubt Sam, as the Bible, is teaching against antinomianism, which many think grace teaches unfortunately. You have misrepresented not only Sam, but worse, the word of God, and therefore God Himself.

But honestly I stopped listening to him a few years ago when he said that Calvinist have a different and false God just like the JW's. edit- JW's translate it "exercising faith" or "exercise faith"

In case you didn't know, the words faith and faithfulness is a distinction in the English which neither the Hebrew nor the Greek languages make. They are literally the same word in both Greek and Hebrew.

@@Yetter oh I see. Yeah, even John macarthur had a book titled "Faith that Works". So of course every christian should agree that if you don't have any works to back up your faith, like James says, "Can that faith save you?"

I think people get confused with the word works in James faith with deeds verse. The works in James verse isn’t for salvation but to show your faith in Him. If you follow Christ and have faith, you won’t lose salvation but you should show your faith by serving Christ.

To be justified is to be saved from eternal punishment for our sins because of repenting and putting our faith in Jesus who died for our sins and rose again. Being cleansed by His blood. That scripture in no way undoes all the other scriptures. They compliment and agree with each other as the Bible is the whole Word of God. One scripture does not undo the others. They all go together. If we don't speak it with our mouth then we do not truly believe. For if we believe we will speak it. They work together. Belief and speaking from the heart and spirit and from faith; and belief and repentance. It's all one and the same. You can't have one without the other. You don't have one without the other. The law and statutes show us plainly that we are sinners and no amount of self effort or good deeds will change that. Nor will it purify our hearts or wash our sins away. It won't change us. Only the blood of Jesus will wash our sins away and only Jesus can save us. The Holy Spirit will change us if we let Him. He is a person. Some faith is dead. That is they spout the words and they think they believe but there is no fruit to back it up. No works. The cares of life choke it all out. Again works do Not save. However they are proof of genuine enduring belief and repentance. They are proof of salvation. Dead faith can't save. Revelation 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Isaiah 53 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels True faith will act. It will produce repentance and good works. Because of having true faith. Works do not save but they are a result of true faith that reaches the heart and soul and changes us. Romans 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven Luke 8:21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord 1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace

James 2 speaks of this ; faith with works are dead.... no contradiction but spiritual understanding needed; salvation is only through Christ Jesus but obedience and repentance is a sign of this change in Christ.... we water down salvation when we think we can live without repentance and obedience; it is biblical; maybe the difference between those who will be raptured and those who remain for further refinement.... pray for understanding

In the interests of fairness...... James 2:18 But someone [q]may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” 19 You believe that [r]God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and [s]as a result of the works, faith was [t]perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Romans 3:24-28 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. ☝️☝️☝️Salvation is by faith alone through grace alone❤

James affirms that deeds (or actions) are the byproduct of a living faith. Works do not justify us or make us righteous before God, nor are they the means to salvation. Rather, our deeds are the fruit that grows from one who is obedient to God’s commands and transformed by His grace. James 2:26, we read jesus say: "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." genuine faith is accompanied by corresponding actions! Sometimes the truth is hard to,accept, but it doesn’t change the fact that Sam speaks the truth.

God is love. We all fall short and sin. Love is just and merciful. Because God is loving He must judge sin, we all stand judged. Because God is merciful He provided a way out from under the weight of the law and for us to be regenerated. If we trust Jesus shed His sinless blood, died and rose from the grave He forgives us of our sins and gives us a new heart that wants to look God as our Father genuinely and delight in Him, freeing us from being slaves to sin. The rest is our mind catching up with that reality and taking hold of His teaching and truth until He returns, or we die. We aren't saved or kept saved by obedience. We can only be lost through unbelief (trusting in our own righteousness, to be or remain saved) or blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (attributing clear works of God, healing/deliverance, to demons and Satan). Commandments aren't have to's, they are what we do because we actually want God's direction and It's what fulfills us. You can't be born again without the desire to honor God. (Works based salvation "Christians" and "lawless Christians" are both wrong.) We love because God first loved us. Jesus is God, the Son, "the first and the last", God along with God the Father "the Lord God", this title is mentioned with being tied to God in Isaiah 44:6-8, and that same is sent along with the Lord God's Spirit in Isaiah 48:11-16. Jesus further claims this title also in Revelation 1:8-17. Leave catholicism/orthodox/protestant churches that preach strife, or inform them.

We are saved through faith in Jesus Christ through grace alone, faith is believing that everything that needed to be done for you salvation was fulfilled by Jesus Christ through the cross. Nothing you and I do can save us and if it were so, that would make Christ's crucification meaning less.
