Sam, I called my closest friends after I listened this song, and told them I loved them. Don't know who was in the picture near the end of the video, but I know he must have meant a lot to you. I lost one of my best friends unexpectedly a few years ago, and it's strange how time just keeps moving on. I'm sure you think about him regularly like I do with my bro. It's so refreshing to have an artist who not only puts out meaningful good music but also encourages to fight these toxic social norms. especially for those men out there who are always told to be strong, not show emotion and be that typical "male stereotype". If you are only just stumbling across this great artist I hope you check his other songs and realise just how strong the messages he puts out are. Thank you for your artistic contribution to the world. 💗 My feels and very long rant about this piece of art: Over the last decade I found 2 of the platonic loves of my life. It took a long time and a lot of vulnerability after being abused to trust others. These friends helped me heal gradually. Of course I also did tons of my own work but they helped spark my growth and healing. I found those friends in different countries when living outside of America. Yes, I took my $700, my disorders, and desperation which was actually hope - I just didn’t know that back then, and a job 7000 miles away. I left an addictive abusive relationship that I knew I couldn’t hack unless I just went far far away. That’s ten years on July 29. This song is super passionate about that platonic love. I’ll admit that on my first few listens, the intensity of the song - with Sam’s loyalty piercing through it - roused an old hyper vigilant, paranoid nature in me. That nature can keep one safe but it also can kill. I try to always stay curious and get other perspectives to an experience, especially ones I feel any kind of “aversion” to as it’s called in Buddhism. I listened many more times. What an anthem! I was doing my best in social isolation but last week I had one of the worst mental health episodes in years. I live on my own in a city I know no one in. I’ve been back in America 2 years and I just can’t get past reverse culture shock fully. I’ve never accepted this culture though. It kills me that I can’t find a specific city to settle in still after running for so many years. And I hate that my friends I met abroad all live in various countries and not in one place anymore. They are chosen family. I made 2 friends a state over but obviously can’t see them. Those are newer friends but I know they are good peoples. I trust I can suss our good friends nowadays. But it took those platonic loves to show me what a good friend is. Even though I’m an artist and good at isolation, good at being neglected as a kid! 🙄 life is possibly harder than ever right now. I see a lot of people reaching out anonymously on KZfaq and I finally get it lol. Despite 3 hours self care a day, it seems I needed to be vulnerable and reach out to my friends last week to bring me back to reality from my episode. It’s so hard to be seen or want to be seen as strong and feel “needy” if reaching out even the slightest. 🥺 I’m still growing. Do you relate?? 😊 Resilience isn’t always in the form of proving some die hard self sufficiency though. Its been a challenge to go from fear of being codependent to developing Interdependence :) I’m a woman saying this and I know men have a really hard time with this as they’ve been taught to stuff their feelings since childhood. Music is the Divine. It’s obvious in how it fosters men to unpack and express their feelings! I hope we can all find true friends. If you haven’t, don’t give up. And if you feel someone doesn’t accept you then don’t spend your time with them. Unfortunately sometimes it takes “bringing things to the wrong door” many times and getting hurt along the way in the process. Don’t give up. Especially if you are living through mental health struggles or you are from a broken home I send love virtually to you and I hope you find your chosen family even if you have to rely on WiFi as the only option. 💗 The love in this anthem is needed for our generation. We are the generation to dismantle mental health stigma. We need truth to counteract the negatives that come with social media, globalisation, and capitalism. So many of us are working to dismantle the shit that is holding us back from genuine love. Platonic love and self love are incredible. We are all full beings with or without a romantic partner/marriage/significant other styles of relationship society has dictated we are flawed if we aren’t in. The single life is worthy and full of love too. 💗 Welp, getting off my random ass social isolation soap box now. Just so anyone reading this knows I almost never posted comments on KZfaq prior to our current state of the world!
