Sam followed his Father's footsteps into a golfing career and turned professional in 1970. He has enjoyed a remarkable career amassing 44 tournament wins. He won on the European Tour twenty-one times and won the European Senior Tour order of Merit in 2005, 2006 and 2009. He is famous for his long driving, accurate irons play and as one of the early pioneers of the broom-handle putter.
Sam was a member of the European Ryder Cup team a remarkable eight times and sunk the winning put at the Belfry in 1995 to deny the Americans for the first time in 28 years. He famously captained the winning European Ryder Cup team in 2002 at the Belfry to a 3 point victory.
Never far away from a Golf Course, Sam has been building a strong reputation as a Golf Course Designer by designing the Torrance Course at the home of golf, St Andrews. He is currently working on a project in Holland in co-operation with Made in Scotland and European Golf Design.
In between tournaments and golf course design, Sam often takes his place in the commentary box, where he has been a regular member of the BBC at the Major golf events over the last decade.
