This is a short video clip of the (Western) Samoa Teachers Cultural Group when they performed for the 2nd South Pacific Arts Festival held in Rotorua New Zealand in 1976. Featured in the video is many of the well known teachers of Samoa as well as the legend Ioelu himself who is fuataimi in this video.

I'm Tongan and our Tau'olunga which derrived from the Samoans of course, especially the foot movements which was the way our old tauolunga used to be danced. Seeing a lot of Samoan dances I rarely see the influence but watching this you can see the foot movements and the hand movements the Tongans adopted. Interesting enough many men who tulafale (dance behind the girl tauolunga) still use these foot movements and hand/arm movements, especially the older men. You can feel the authenticity and pride in this video.

@@Lishmaa Oh that's nice ofa atu mei Ha'amoa my Tongan kainga, if you didn't know Tongan and Samoan royals are really close my friend, our royals are known as the "Tama a aiga" they also have ties with your current rulers the Tui Kanokupolu royal family, our Samoans orators still chant both the Tui Tonga and Tui Kanokupolu royal family title due to the ties with the "Ama clan" and Tui Manu'a, are you from Ha'apai/Vava'u or Tonga tapu?

Love the dances. Unfortunately nothing stays the same in this life. Things always evolve in life. The reality is the Samoan dances say 1000 years ago was different from the Samoan dances 500 years ago. And the "true" traditional dances of today is different from our dances 500 years ago. Even our spoken it has change from time to time.

This is the proper way of doing traditional Samoan dances - not like to today's fake Samoan dances where they use the keyboard that drowns out the singing and that songs are sung R&B or opera style. Yuck! That is fake and it is a lie to the rising Samoan generation overseas who want to learn about their culture.

I love listening to some of these old songs. I've never seen a dance like this, with the guy getting up and doing a Taualuga? I see men get up and to the aiuli?? Where he sort of plays comic relief but nothing like this. Not just Samoan men but Polynesian men can be graceful and in a masculine way.Maybe it's the body type, just naturally move better?? Have more kokonute mojo? Who knows lol.

So much has changed today, that's why - I mean, look at our Samoan dancing today and compare it with the dance just 30 years ago and you'll notice how acrobatic, matrix like and ugly it has become.

+C-liscious Booya This is how they are meant to dance. From what my grandfather tells me, no matter how quick the songs and beat, if it's a taualuga, the dance is slow and graceful for the taupou (female) or manaia (male) as both can do this dance, it's not limited to only the women.

+D Misa I'm 29 but I know some of the old tunes (not names just familiar with the tunes) because my mum would listen to it when I was a kid. Hehe I love the words you used to describe it.. I'm not totally sure of what you mean but I know you must be referring to some of the contemporary stuff.. to be honest I like some of it maybe because that's what I know.. learning dances to Pacific Soul etc.. It's appealing cause it's bright and fun kind of music for younger ppl.. (and I know I've still quiet a bit to learn I'm sure in terms of Fa'a Samoa in general) but sometimes it does go a bit far.. which I find is kind of embarrassing cause it's like we're trying to be somebody else.. I think as long as it's emphasised that it's "Contemporary" rather than sort of just doing it and letting ppl assume that it's the traditional thing if they don't know better.. I don't know.. mind you, art has fashions.. we're always changing including our costumes etc.. As long as we keep our feet on the ground and keep the true, authetic tradition and stories etc.. held tight and safe so that we don't forget, keep it alive!!.. There are many other aspects to the culture that need to be kept alive.. one I think are the legends.. There are books.. but when you ask elders or even somebody from that village that a story might originate from they don't know.. I know maybe it's a little ignorant to think everybody's going to know everything and it's not exactly information you need everyday but I find it even elders don't know much sometimes (also given I don't speak fluent Samoan and maybe they don't always have the best memory from age etc).. except for Telesa who everybody seems to speak of but as far as that.. not many ppl can say much about the rock pyramids etc.. Maybe this is the fault of the Missionaries who did a bit of a number on Polynesia, doing what they thought was "improving" things but actually we lost quiet a bit.. more so the other Polynesian countries because Samoa and Tonga are quiet strong in terms of culture etc.. still speak Samoan, look Samoan (except me I'm afakasi).. hold Samoan cermonies.. Sing Samoan songs and understand the language it's being sung in.. eat Samoan food, there's still knowledge of the traditional dance as you can see in this clip.. maybe not everybody knows but we know enough of the basics I guess..? the Slap dance and Sasa etc.. etc.. Samoa and Tonga are very lucky.. that although our economy isn't as good as French Polynesian and Hawa'ii for example that we're still very authentic
