Usually, eyeglass prescriptions consist of two numbers: spherical and cylindrical. The length of the eyeball influences the spherical number. When the eyeball is longer, a negative (minus) number is prescribed, and when it's shorter, a positive (plus) number is prescribed. The negative spherical number tends to increase with age. The positive number can decrease over time and might even disappear permanently as the eyeball's length becomes normal again with age.
The cylindrical number is related to the shape of the cornea. When the cornea is more oval-shaped, it is steeper along one axis and flatter along another due to genetic factors.
