But he had only guessed one song at that point so when she said he gets points deducted for his song she didn’t actually deduct any points from him. So she technically won the song challenge based on her point system and then lost the finish the lyric challenge but she forgot about it

I have something similar. When I sing I don't actually listen to the background music that much unless I seriously need to hear the cue. The timing and everything else just works through my brain and I can sing it and keep in time with the music without even hearing the music. So for any shows I do I remember the lyrics way more than the music

So the reason Ryan likely won the tiebreaker and you did better listening Sam is due to how you experienced everything differently. He learned notes, lyrics, lines, ques, emotions, etc. You live and breathed the music itself, less of the literal nuts and bolts that went into making the musical actually happen. Not that you don't know those things, but you didn't experience them personally.

You're Welcome is a lot more effective than Blue in that scene. It's scarier and takes the situation serious

that’s the point though. blue is through the perspective of kurt and ram, and since they think what they’re doing is funny, the song makes light of it. the entire musical does so with all of the dark topics handled. you’re welcome is a good song that portrays the situation for what it is, but it does so from veronica’s perspective. both songs effectively depict the grotesque topic, just from different perspectives /lh

The sporcle quiz you guys did at the end is amazing. There’s actually ALOT of Heathers trivia on there. I tend to test myself on all my favourite things including heathers just so I know basically everything there is to know. It also helps for people that don’t remember song lyrics well to get the song in your head if you do the “can you type the lyrics to __” until you can get all the words right.

Blue is a catchy song, but it essentially treats date rpe like a joke. "You're Welcome" does a much better job of getting across the weight of the situation, and it sets up JD and Veronica's revenge on Kurt and Ram much more convincingly than Blue does. Also, the original composer/ lyricist and book writer worked together on these changes when they had the chance to reopen the show on the West End. So it's not like they just made these choices randomly. It is very common for material to be reworked.

I think one main downfall of "You're Welcome" is that although it gets across the weight of the situation, it seems to sympathizes with JD and justify his later actions more than when "Blue" was included. I'm not sure which song is better for the show but either way, the changes heavily impact the audience's perception of JD, his actions and intentions.

Makes sense though. Most people I know would not knowingly listen to their own voice of their own volition if they can help it. So I figured Ryan would either lose or tie at best. When it came to using lyrics as the tie-breaker, though, I knew it would be Ryan's win.

Sam and Ryan, I’m fairly new to both this channel and the musical Heathers. As a huge musical theatre fan, I’m not sure how Heathers slipped through the cracks, but it did. Till recently. I’ve watched a few of the videos where Ryan talked about being JD, but I haven’t come across a video where you discussed the one thing about the character that fascinates the psychology-side of my brain-JD being super submissive and (in some performances) scared during Dead Girl Walking. Everything we learn about JD’s psychology in the musical shows him to be very controlling and manipulative. He’s dominant and possessive, yet also super sweet to Veronica. So here’s my question: Why is JD completely willing to go along with drunk Veronica’s very dominant energy during DGW but doesn’t really allow her to be dominant at any other time? Is it because... a) he thinks he is dreaming at first b) he’s also never been with a girl (I’ve seen a few productions where he clearly hates being touched) c) he’s aware she is completely trashed and thinks he can hold this over her head later d) he’s just horny and can’t focus on anything else but the girl in his room, thus doesn’t care how it gets done as long as it happens As the original JD, I’d love your insight, Ryan.

If you see heathers on the west end they make you’re welcome funny. On the album it sounds serious but live its performed just as funny as blue is. I just think it makes a stronger case for why JD is right for killing Kurt and Ram and honestly for that reason I prefer blue. JD isn’t right for killing them and you’re welcome kind of gets you on his side more

Loved the little tiny rant about Blue! You're Welcome is a bop, but it kinda messes with the tone of the musical I think. Heathers is supposed to be shocking and thought-provoking. It's almost like the meaning of satire is getting lost in time.
