Do you know the difference between samba and bossa nova? Are they the same thing?
These are questions that I have heard a lot when I lived in the US. In this video you will understand if bossa nova and samba are the same thing and how to approach their bass lines to get the right groove.
I also prepared a PDF file with some tips to play samba and bossa nova accordingly. You can download it here: brazilianbassguitar.com/materi...
I strongly suggest you subscribing to this channel to get more stuff about Brazilian music on bass.

Thank you for the lesson! I am brazilian by birth, but I grew up in Germany and started playing music as a heavy metal musician who studied classical guitar. So I was deprived of the rich brazilian musical culture and I try to remedy this now. Muito obrigado!

I try to study the bossa nova on a piano for a song, but I keep overdoing the syncopation with the left hand. I also saw dozens of piano tutorials for bossanova, one of them also saying dont overdo it, this time I am more convinced 😊

Muito Bom! Wonderful presentation. I'm one of those "yanquis" who thought samba was just extra fast bossa. Didn't really realize that samba came first and had much larger playing ensembles. Also, I absolutely agree with you and the other comment below - LISTENING to recordings, critical listening, is the best way to really absorb these styles (and any style).

Hats off dude, really instructive video!! I'm literally getting started with Samba and Bossa Nova stuffs and besides what you mentioned throughout the video, I was also wondering, what kind of scales / modes should be "put forward" within those two genres? Like I can see that it's mainly based on the circle of 4th and 5th patterns, yet should I prefer some major scales or minor scales? Or even melodic minor scales if we consider adding some jazzy flavors to the sound? Or is it just a matter of taste and you can feel free to apply any color to the "basic" bass patterns? (some phrygian mode, for instance?) Anyway, thanks a million for all these advice of yours, you're a great teacher and musician, keep groovin' !!!

Glad I found this. Looked at videos from the (great) Rick Beato and Justin Guitar and they didn’t mention the importance of the notes flowing into one another and that changes the FEEL completely and that’s what makes bossa nova so special. Like the most important thing. Obrigado!

@Uncle Gold okay if you want to get stuck on semantics then I'll change it to "bossa nova is just slow samba"; however your semantic games still fall flat, because a comparison like this says nothing about chronology. one could say: "ska is just a faster version of reggae," and it would still be a valid opinion regardless of the fact that ska predates reggae.
