Mark Lawson talks to notorious literary bad boy Martin Amis ahead of the BBC dramatisation of his book Money. In this revealing interview Amis speaks candidly about his relationship with his father Kingsley Amis, which survived the breakup of his parents' marriage and his father's disinterest in reading Martin's books. Amis also reveals how his sister Sally was a 'victim of the sexual revolution' whose consequent struggles in life influenced his latest book The Pregnant Widow.

Mr. Amis, I first heard your voice when being interviewed by one of my countries greatest hosts, Eleanor Wachtel. Thank you for introducing to another level of historical discourse.

My goodness, Mark Lawson palatalizes even more than Professor Severus Snape! Martin Amis has exactly the same timbre as David Coverdale, though I'm glad they never switched. Imagine MA yelling "Ah've bin mistreatidddd!" and DC penning "Yellow Dog"...

Martin Amis is amazing. A novel's struggle with excellence, fascinating.

AMis is constantly described as a 'bad boy' or 'controversial' - I have not seen nor read any evidence or this yet. A perfectly reasonable man.

When Martin Amis writes, he feeds on the flesh of easy targets, and his middle class fans enjoy the read. When being criticised about his writing, he plays the victim. I have never heard him speak in his talented literary way about the fun he derives from his style of writing, and that leaves him wanting ( in my opinion)

Kreutzer Sonata is better than dreadful. Plus... Hadji Murat, 1904, masterpiece, right at the end of Tolstoy's life. Lazily argued point in this interview.

The idea that there is a kind of regional character about how men pursue woman seems to me absurd . Are the English always diffident ? Are the Americans always confident? Is there any statistical support for this. i doubt it .

no, but there's a difference between what's unchristian and what's immoral. This isn't Medieval Spain.

What's with the "bad-ass" intro? It's not like Mark Lawson is shit scary, or hard, or anything.

Well his novels are not, how shall i say, 'christian' by any stretch of the most liberal christ-lovers imagination.
