An observation: it appears lots of Sam’s early drawings were mechanical but that also means he had subconsciously learned to draw shapes well in his childhood, since robots are largely made of cylinders and different rectangles therefore giving him a foundation for organic figures later. I’m sure this helped him in his development of framing out a subject and transposing it with digital paint. Not to mention the plethora of resources available in a digital medium. Impressive work at that age though! Inspires me to pick art back up.

Idk like I’m actually just at a loss of words. I’ve been drawing since I was at least 7, pretty much whenever I had free time. I always drew strictly from imagination but from what I can remember I was never able to think or draw that level of detail. It’s truly shocking and almost confusing in a way, I just don’t understand how at such a young age you were able to conceptualize such detailed and clean ideas. It doesn’t discourage me or anything, it just genuinely intrigues me bc I don’t know why I wasn’t able to do the same

@@StraightNuts-mq4qs if ur bad at drawing, just say that lmao. artists dont come out of the womb with a pre-existing developed mental library. art takes years and years to perfect. again as the person above said, sam took art classes at a very young age and stayed consistent with his art studies. he would not be at the level he is today if it weren't for his fortunate upbringing, and you literally chose to ignore that. to claim art as a mere talent is blatant ignorancy. art takes countless hours of dedication and effort. i dont want your comment to unmotivate art babies who are struggling with their confidence just because you don't know how to study art. i just think you're not putting in the work you need to.
@FelonDog
@FelonDog 2 ай бұрын
 @kar1305 That's super f*cking insensitive and rude as hell to tell someone they are bad at drawing and basically calling them "lazy" (not putting in the work they need to) when you don't even know anything about them, and all because of how they feel or believe. If you don't agree with them then that's your opinion, but to tell them they think that way because they are bad at drawing and lazy? Despicable. Don't pretend you care about what other people are feeling when YOU are personally attacking and unmotivating someone else. There is a talent aspect to literally EVERYTHING humans do. It's why some people will never be on the same level as someone else. It's why a group of people taking the same exact art classes and doing the same amount of studying will always have those shining stars that seem so much more advanced than everyone else. It's why some people read faster than others. It's why some people draw faster than others. It's why some people have better memorization than others so they study less than others. It's why some people seem smarter than others. It's why some people have super creative ideas constantly and others can't think of a single one. Some people play video games all day long for years and that doesn't mean they will be able to beat someone else who hardly plays video games in a competitive game. Some of those people will actually be REALLY bad at the games, despite how long they have played them so "practice" doesn't even equal "better". People have different brains attuned to different things. To say everyone is on the same level of understanding and advances the same is simply untrue. People can put in just as much work as Sam and take the same exact art classes he has and still be worlds behind him. Learning things quickly and being good at it fast is the TALENT aspect. The wiring of your brain. Of course people can always work 200% harder or longer to get on the same level as someone else, but the fact they have to work that much harder and longer means they don't have as much natural talent for that thing as the people ahead of them that got there with less work. People will NEVER be on the same level as everyone else because we are not a hive mind with the same exact capabilities and understanding as everyone else. If you sit a 100 children down in an art classroom for the first time who have never drawn before and all give them the same lesson and hand them the same reference picture to draw from, you think every single one of those kids are going to churn out identical artworks of the same skill level? No. Some of them will end up drawing a picture that looks identical to the reference. Those few are naturally talented. And if they continue with the art and practicing, they will advance faster than all the others because from the get-go they are already really good at replicating what they see. Getting better than they currently are is obviously the skill part. But starting out that good and being able to draw what they see, identifying the shapes in a reference and recreating them is a talent. To say talent doesn't exist and people just aren't working as hard as other people is not only untrue but an insult to people that have worked their butt off and just aren't on the same level as other people who have had to put in LESS work.

It's amazing how much of a difference supporting your child's creative dreams can make. I gave up for SO many years because schools hated that I'd "waste my time" writing or drawing instead of doing school work. I even had a math teacher rip up some of my writing in the middle of class and toss it in the bin. I wanted to get into animal sciences when I was in 3rd grade but I was told it's a hopeless, nonexistant direction and ultimately gave up on my love for research because I got restricted from reading science and especially from bringing those books out in class. I didn't start drawing until 7th grade but faced the same issues. Now I'm a depressed adult who gave up on dreams and am always struggling to be creative. So please, support your children's creative and ambitious endeavors as much as you can and don't let the schools bully them out of it.

thank you for showing all this to us! i know as artists we so often feel ashamed or embarrassed of our old work but imo it's something to be celebrated as it quite literally documents our journey through not only art but really our lives as a whole! you've had such a unique art journey compared to most artists i've seen and it was so incredibly cool to see and hear about where you started and how far you've come. looking at your current work & your love for drawing human characters i never would have guessed that for a long time your comfort zone was solely mechanical things! i really loved seeing how your interests and priorities changed over the years (your watercolors are beautiful!) and knowing that you were trained from such a young age makes sooo much sense, it really shows! so yeah this was super cool and i'm so happy you felt comfortable enough to share it with us! even if you dunked on some of your old drawings (the irresistible artist urge) your positive attitude throughout was refreshing and inspiring. banger video! 💖

I love that Sam gave himself 10/10 for his early sketchbooks and generally rated himself highly. Sometimes all we see are the mistakes, so I found myself smiling proudly for Sam recognizing and acknowledging his hard earned skills. Way to go, Sam!

bro this whole time i was just thinking "well, im gonna give up on art now lmao" everything was literally so bewildering but then he goes on to talk about his learning experience and about practicing and then i'm like "oh so that's why i still suck, i got to put effort in gosh darn it" but all hail the art god Sam, it was truly so cool to see all this old art and development

Sam, Sam, Sam. I know you are super talented, I love your art, love your videos. And now seeing the "little you".... omg. you were incredible even at 12 yrs old. I hope you are very , very proud of yourself. I know you joke about how bad this or that is, no , no , no. Please acknowledge how truly awesome this work is. How very special to see the sketch of your grandfather, loved that so much, and the watercolors, beautiful!! I leave your videos feeling so inspired and for that I thank you. Merry Christmas, Sam.
