Launched in 1992, Free to Be used to focus on lessons on abstinence and sexual risk avoidance. But with a drop in the number of teen pregnancies and teens having sex in the U.S. the nonprofit, Santa Rosa-based group has revamped its focus. Today, trained peer advisors and presenters address mental health issues, online navigation, character building, self esteem and how to navigate the pitfalls of life online and in social media. The group is now run by executive director Leslie Bisbee Jordan, daughter of founder Sue Bisbee. The group presented to 2,600 students last year. For more information go to www.freetobeteens.org
