it looks like the gas is barely covering the weld bead. You need to plan your arcs around curved surfaces and position yourself to run the longest bead you can, towards yourself. Do a practice run and move the gmat tool over the part gap without turning it on and see if you have a free swing with the tool from your start to finish. End after a part of the arc is completed, and then reposition for the next weld length. Practice again moving it around the arc.

Good work for getting stuck in! Welding is an art, and all forms have their requirements, you'll soon learn the parameters of the mig and material thickness. If the weld stands too proud, could be the amps are too low for material thickness, weld hotter and the weld will form to the parent metal and appear flatter. Too hot and it will burn right through. Rust jobs can be a character builder but persistence and observation is key for learning.

Tip 1. With sheetmetal repair, lots and lots of tacks. Don't bother trying for beads it causes warping on larger repairs and tacks require less grinding to get it flat. 2. With that high zinc primer DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES. Much like welding galvanized metal the welding vaporizes it and is highly toxic. Last time I welded galvanized it made me sick for like 2 days. 3. Invest in a real face shield for grinding, that stuff gets behind safety glasses pretty easily. 4. Get some 1/8 and 1/16 inch plate cut into 1.5 inch straps for practice pieces about 3" long. Practice t joints first as they're the easiest and will teach you how to control your puddle and arc force. Then move on to a lap joint, then a butt joint. Setting aside a solid couple hours to practice in one chunk will give massive gains in quality. I've only been welding since 2006 professionalishly, apparently I'm certified to work on govt. And mil product so I may know a thing or 3

The better you can get on a bad machine the easier it'll be when you get a more professional welder, my welding teacher used to start semester by making everyone use a terrible machine until you could weld decently with it and then you'd be allowed to progress to a better more capable machine 👌🏻

Good work with the metal work bro, might I suggest when cutting out small pieces from your chassis... rather then cut corner, drill a small hole at the corners then cut the straight lines between like connect the dots... minimizes chances of a crack starting where the 2 cuts meet if ever the area is stressed after the repair

Sheet metal welding looks good, repair is almost invisible! If you are going to do this kind of repairs(rust repairs on old shtboxes...) often then I would recommend two tools. A sheet metal brake (even a small cheap one is very good to have) and a shrinker/stretcher (cheap one works alright). What these two tools in combination allow you to do is curve metal pieces, very handy for small repair panels, put a bend in it, and then shrink/stretch the edge. Good video, and relatable content. God Bless.
@Michael-jq5pf
@Michael-jq5pf Жыл бұрын
How small and cheap can you get a brake for? I had a 32 I was going to do some sheet repair to but ended up saying fk all that, sold it since nobody was making replacement stamps for the sections of the body I needed.
@theservant752
@theservant752 Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-jq5pf There are real small ones that dont even use stamps, the one I use is about 60cm and all it can do is fold a piece of metal (straight and sharp). Dont know about the price, but it does not look expensive... (its probably from the 80s or 90s..)

With the rust patches instead of beads you wanna do tiny tacks around it with gaps and then get in-between those tacks with more tacks and then grind it down. The problem with beading it apparently over heats the metal too much making it cure very poorly but with the tacks there nice and even and it's easier atleast that's what my mechanics teacher told me and once you dial in the settings on the welder it gets even easier then once you get really really good then you can start doing beads on a lil bigger peices.

When welding in the vertical, with mig you want to weld up, starting at the bottom of the piece and traveling up. Generally you need to turn the feed speed down a little along with the voltage. Also you want to weave the torch back n forth across the seem and when on each side you want to momentarily pause on each side of the weave before going the other way. Along with this the torch angle needs to be at a 45 degree angle, the angle helps the heat to not focus on the weld. If dump tube is stainless steel. Which i think it is. You need different feed wire then if welding mild steel
