Not going to lie, I questioned this and thought “how does it differ to just slicing to a drum rack and then playing a bit with the slices?” How wrong I was. This is an absolute masterpiece in setting up for break manipulation. Thank you, Sir! 🫡

People need to start to st least try to do the bare minimum of leg work before asking silly questions. Great video as always. All ways learn while having a giggle million times better than those "hey there youtube" smash that bell producers. Keep up the great work

I think the reason the ultimate breaks and beats version slows down is so that DJs could cut it up with 2 copies on the turntables

It's because that series of breaks LPs catered to hiphop DJs & producers and 140bpm was too fast for most hiphop needs. As the LP was to be cut at 33+1/3rpm it couldn't then be slowed down to 95bpm like if you played an original 7" at 45rpm; thus the record label pressed it like that in advance....

This awesome too, thanks. I'm going to use this slice technique even if I don't need to slice - I find applying a groove to audio doesn't really work that well - but if you do this first it'll be great.

By slowing down the analog format input, you essentially achieve a higher digital sampling rate. Imagine you were recording one second of real time music, and you are sampling into a .wav at 44.1kHz At real time, you would end up with one second of digital wav, which would be comprised of 44100 samples. If instead, you record it at half speed, you would end up with two seconds of wav, for a total of 88200 samples for the same audio.

You'll get way more artifacts from pitching it back up after the fact than if you had just recorded it at the original speed. Sampling records at different speeds and then re-pitching them can produce some cool results if that's the sound you want though.

I have my Amen Breaks on a REASON REDRUM... I use any instruments that I want and in any order... - but your sampling off a record is good for getting authentic archives to compare from (when programming drum machines)... - currently building a Reason 11 Daw; - seems that I must get an EXTRA UNIT to run Ableton (the next Daw which I must upgrade to LEGIT; - I have a Cracked 8 point something on my college rig... - along with a cracked Reason 4 ...they connect reasonably well via ReWire ...my PRO units need each their own box...

Great content Ned. Really informative. Got a Noob question maybe someone can help with.. Why is the preference to slice the sample into midi tracks? I find it easier to visualise the breaks and chops by cutting the break in an audio track. I can also reverse, time stretch and cut. What are the advantages of using Midi? Thanks

Cheers Ned, really helpful vid as ever! I'd be curious to hear people's thoughts on what exactly it is about the amen break that makes it sound so good, and so distinct from other breaks? I've played around with trying to sample breaks from some other songs, but it's so hard to find any that feel as good or hard hitting as the amen break. I think it's something to do with the character of the rides and the fact that every beat (or off beat) has a snare or kick on it. I guess what I'm asking is what makes for a good break for breakbeat/core?

to me it's the whooshing walls of noise the whole thing swims in, every motion in the amen break has its own ripple, which makes the whole thing sound organic and humane and wild.

It's a 45 record, they flipped the actual break to 33 rpm. They didn't want to make it easy for the kids

Not sure if this would quite get the feel you want, but if you drop a sample into a midi track and slice to a short length then add Arp and set it to random with a clip that has all the notes triggered for the whole length you’ll get one slice at a time.

Hey Ned Rush, here to answer your sample rate question. Recording at higher sample rates just means that you are recording beyond 20khz and a few more things. . Typically recording at a 44.1 sample rate is fine but if you plan on maybe recording audio for sound effects or sound design involving slowing down, speeding up or granulizing the audio you would want to record at higher sample rates if you want to have more flexibility with the audio with less artifacts because higher sample rates are able to take more snapshots of the analog audio as it comes in the interface & get turned to digital. . It also allows you to pitch down while having some of the high end on the sound not take an L because as I've said before high sample rates record higher frequencies than 20khz. . Why don't we all record at high sample rates then?It's simply because more sample rates = more data consumed by the audio recording. . Okay I hope this adds to your audio knowledge in some way. Can't believe I've never used that "warp" marker in MIDI editor. Or use zoom to adjust the grid size for quantizing. Also, minor point here: You mentioned the stereo tracking on the original song and how you can hear the best stuff on the right side. So, that's true of course, but your video here doesn't make too good of a point of that (until you pull out Utility ofc) because it's in mono (I think you've been uploading in mono for a long time, actually).
