Hey man! Nah I don't but I would go ahead and bring down 8-10k by maybe 4-5 dB. I don't have the headphone anymore so I can't actually do one but it's still a good can. I just wasn't using it as much and needed some money last year. I sold off most of my headphones then.

I also got the SR850s and I could relate with the experience you told during the Imaging portion of the video.For me hat really shocked me was watching a vlog while being still half asleep and being startled by someone walking on wooden floors and it felt like they were creeping up to me behind my back. I suddenly got woken up and immediately removed the headphones and had to look around me only to realize the only thing behind me was a wall haha. I saw reviews of the Superlux 681s before I got the SR850s but leaned towards the SR850s and I realized later on that my choice was right based on the price because the Sr850s was around $34 and the 681s were like 50~60$.

Yeah man! This happens to me with the K702, LCD-2, 9500, K712, 850, etc. It's part of the reason why I sometimes *don't* actually enjoy listening with those types of headphones because I'm constantly on high alert always thinking Jason Voorhees is about to chop my head off xD

I've been using these for years and while they're definitely flimsy and kinda falling apart at this point (and I've had to replace the cable like 10 times probably), but I'm honestly considering just replacing them with another pair, that's how much I like them. And it's also quite funny to hear someone mention the "I thought that sound was real" thing - I experience it quite frequently with these. Especially when also using virtual surround in games, so the sound has a better directionality to itself. Interesting that other people also experience it, I've never heard anyone else mention it before :)
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah man these have crazy good Soundstage and spacing. Directionality is really intense. Like it's kind of scary. To be honest, I don't often wear these or the 9500's at night because they both make me think stuff is happening in my apt. or outside. Like the apocalypse or something. XD. I did since sell the 850 because I needed money (I sold like 9-10 headphones), but I may just get a pair again down the road. That's how much I loved them.

Lol i'm so wrong, if only i watch your video earlier before i buy those 2. I could probably end up buying this Samson SR850, because i've read many review about it, many said it's a little bit better than HD668B which is very popular cans, and probably is one of the best price to performance cans isn't it ? this Samson will be my next target eheheheh thx man :)

Hey I have been thinking on getting either these 850s or the hd681s for quite some time now,and I don't think there's anyone more qualified to give an opinion other than you on here. I am planning on using them mainly to listen to music,mixing and watching movies From what I learned,the 850s can be a bit tiring on the higher ends but how about the 681s? Does it have any downsides? And if you have the time,I would also like to hear your opinions on the 681evo since it comes with a detachable cable Note: been watching your videos for reference and you earned yourself a sub man.Keep up the good work

I wanted headphones to use with my new digital piano keyboard. After trying a popular studio headphone, I realized that what I needed was open back and what is called a reference headphone. With some research, I figured out that the only thing available that didn't run into the hundreds of bucks was the Samson SR850. I got the Samson headphones for $39. I am very satisfied with them. All I want to do is practice without bothering the neighbors. For that purpose, they work just fine. With the open back, there is little or no sense of isolation, which is what I wanted. For the price, they're fantastic.

@@HomeStudioBasics No. But I'm not that discerning. I had a little keyboard and some vocal also in my 20s, back in the early 1970s. Took it all up again after a friend brought me to karaoke at the local senior center. After six months of singing, I barely passed a vocal test from some online school. Even so, the excessive bass from the studio headphones bothered me enough that I returned them. Suffice to say, extra drivers are not a selling point for me. I had to learn what reference headphones are and then get them. One of things that was shocking to me is that my dollar store earbuds worked in my Roland FP-30X keyboard. You don't get a lot for a dollar, but the frequency response did go down to A0. For what they are, I give them a grade of A.

How does it compare to Philips SHP9500 for music???
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Abdullah! I would say the 850 is definitely brighter up top, a bit too much energy at times. 850 has a slightly better Soundstage and sounds more 3D. 9500 not far behind though. I prefer the 9500 overall because it's built better, with better comfort and an overall better sound although it is very close. 9500 in the low treble/upper mids can similarly have a bit too much energy but I find it's more balanced than an 850. 850 better for Gaming by a slight margin. Both have quite a bit of bass roll off. Also the 9500's cable is detachable which I prefer. Thing is, you may have trouble finding the 9500 at a good price right now though I do think it's worth around $200 max. Back when it was still in circulation it was around $50-70 which is an absolute steal in my opinion. I would try to find it for that price first. Let me know how it goes!

Being somebody has been enjoying a lot my SR850 I agree with everything you said but the bass. I am a metalhead and it sounds very good on bass department with a minor EQ or using the bass function of my Fiio A3. Details are impressive with this cheap headphone. Back to bass subject I never tried any bass heavy headphones to compare with but I think bass despite being quite controlled here in SR850, don't lack at least. Now the golden question, I was considering to buy SHP9500 to step up in sound quality but seems they are quite similar, so I want to know from you how the HD600 sounds compared to this, I see you got one in the background. Have you tried HD58X from Massdrop yet? If so, how they compare to this? Thx
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man! People have been asking me about the 58X and I really want to get my hands on one specifically for a HD600 comparison because I know a lot of people are looking for that and I want to see what the deal is for myself as well. As for the bass on the 850, I'll have to go back and re-watch this video to see what I had said. I think it's very good! A bit rolled off but not as much as something like a K240 which is a plus. I love the K240 but it can sound a bit anemic down there and kind of clammy at times. I think the step up to the 9500 would be perfect for you actually. To me the 850's essy and sibilant treble is what holds it back from being perfect. You can always EQ it down but I think the 9500 just sounds more refined. A lot of people love to complain about the metallic area around 5-7k but I just laugh. I hear crickets when it comes to other headphones and their issues but for whatever reason people love to dump on the 9500 especially when you compare it favorably to an HD600. I think the 9500 sounds more like an audiophile headphone than even an 850. The 850's treble is just too much and while it is crazy detailed with a great Soundstage, it just ends up annoying me. Voices seem to ALWAYS have that annoying bite to them. Still a tremendous value and I won't be getting rid of mine. Love them for Gaming and Movies too. The 9500 is a headphone that I desire to put on my head pretty much all the time (and especially going back to it after not listening for a while).

@@HomeStudioBasics First, for the content you provided in your channel and plus the quick and full answer, you just got a new subscriber! Now, to go even further, how better a HD600 would be from Samson and SHP9500? Worth the much bigger expense? HD58X seems to have a bit more bass and is easier to drive due 150ohm (HD600 has 300 I think). Once again, thank you for replying the way you did, very detailed explanation of your thoughts, that is lacking on KZfaq!
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 жыл бұрын
@Carlos Panades Wow thanks man! Ah, the most heated discussion here on my channel is of course the ever snippy HD600 vs. SHP9500 debate. I'm of the opinion now that no, the HD600 is not worth the extra investment over a 9500. People tend to get really butt hurt about this but the fact of the matter is that the 9500 provides the same level of detail and costs roughly a quarter of the price without the need for an amp. It's really not even a discussion to me. 5-7k will be brighter for sure, but people love to take that one small issue and make it into a sky is falling proposition. The reality is that HD600 has the issue of the 3k bump so it's a wash. Neither headphone is perfect but for my money, I'd take the 9500 everyday and twice on Sunday. It has a crisper, more airy sound and just blows me away every time I go back to it after a hiatus. Another guy on my original 9500 review described it best: "I did a deep comparison with my sets of hd600 vs 9500, they do not sound the same - sorry. not even close. the 9500 is a full range spectrum capable, the 600 are narrowed to mid range only. the 9500 cost 25% only, but are 20-40% better sounding. that is the short one sentence review for professionals. the hd600 of mine are now on the second hand market waiting for a buyer." He's completely right. Def check out my review here and let me know what you think! I also did a part 2 which you can get to from this link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gs6Tnq2avbHPhmw.html I also did an official comparison on my website. When I got them, they had KSN 1005 piezo tweeters which were detailed but HARSH, very hard to attenuate properly even with the original Brilliance attenuator. There is a bit of break-in period but still, bass is inadequate and the treble is ear piercing to me and I'm 55yrs old with waning high frequency hearing. Dear Stuart, Thanks for the awesome detailed review and comparison. I also read your review in your blog. My earlier plan was to buy AKG, but due to the pandemic I couldn't afford it and amp at present, so I bought the Samson. Now I'm waiting for it's arrival 🙂. In one of your comment you said that you set the EQ around 9k-10k to -5db. The frequency graph in many reviews including yours shows the base frequencies below 100k curves to lower level, and higher frequencies at higher level. Is there any need of adjusting the base and higher frequencies to 'flat' like the '9k-10k'? I'm very new to these that's why I'm asking. Shouldn't all these frequencies to be adjusted to get a flatter sound? Like increasing the base and decreasing the highs? I also found some softwares which adjusts the EQ to get the 'flatter' sound. One is Sonarworks and the other is EQ Apo. Do you have any experience with these or simillar softwares?

Hey man thank you so much! 100K? I'm a bit confused on that one. I think you meant 100Hz right? I'd probably keep the bass about the same on the 850. You could raise it a bit if you want but I like it where it is tbh. Yeah I've used EQ Apo. You could also go with one called Equalify which someone told me about recently that I may use. :) Right now I'm using the EQ that comes with the SoundBlasterX G6 (Downloadable App) and love it.

Ran these for several years -- I purchased 3 of them. After about 1 to 1.5 years the left ear would always break and I'd go get another one. Which was fine because it was around the time the earpads started to degrade and the price was right. Overall the sound quality and clarity (at any price) is really very very good. I had these paired with a $20 Xonar DG sound card with pre-amp on my PC which was MORE than enough for these. They got LOUD and retained clarity. Songs like Alicia Keys Girl on Fire really had that extra sparkle you're looking for in the vocals sometimes. I tested them against M50X and I was not impressed at all. I stuck with the SR850 regardless of price. If you're looking for a thump or bass hit though, these will never be it. There is none.

How do these compare to K702 (5x expensive) and 400i (4x expensive)?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! K702 is going to have way less treble extension although it's a perfect amount for me. SR850 will be very bright in the treble. The K702's have a mid range bump but it's also done very very well. 850 has really great mids as well. K702 to me is just about a perfect headphone. You'll notice both have significant bass roll off but the 850's even more so than K702. I would get a K702 and not even think twice. Love the 850 though. Out of HD600, DEVA, K702, K612, 9500, 9600, and KPH30i, I def reach for the K702 the most often nowadays. It's just a perfect sound. DEVA has slightly better instrument timbre and resolution, but the treble sometimes bothers me. 400i is similar to a DEVA. Same sort of slight issue in the treble, but not a deal breaker. Between 400i and K702, that's pretty tough. It's hard because while the 702's don't have any areas I need to EQ, the 400i has a bit better timbre and resolution (like the DEVA). I guess for me it would come down to Soundstage. K702's is definitely better, although the 400i is above average (better than an HD600 for instance). What kinds of music are you listening to?
@MrSandwichk
@MrSandwichk 3 жыл бұрын
@@HomeStudioBasics got my K702's 3 days ago. they sound very very clear and the comfort is great. paid $253 for it in India. wish it had more for the price. didnt come with a cover or a case. Sony XM3 cost $40 more and offer a case and a lot of tech, but I didn't wanna take risk with Sony's sound. I listen to all kinds of music but all on my phone Galaxy Note 8. @@MrSandwichk So great to hear you're enjoying them, man! Yeah, I think you made the right choice lol. I would kind of tend to agree on the 702's lack of accessories. A 1/4" jack was all that I got and it was a bit disappointing if I'm being honest. Amazing sound though. I use them pretty much every single day, and out of the 8 headphones I have currently, they definitely get the most use. The sound is just so pure.

@HomeStudioBasics 5 жыл бұрын
If it were me I'd probably go with the DT990. The treble is less harsh overall I think. The 990's are also going to be a lot more comfortable for long gaming sessions. I can't keep the 850's on my head for too long before I need to adjust and even take them off for relief. Soundstage on both is around the same. You're going to get a nice out of your head feeling and sense that sounds are coming from around you.

@@HomeStudioBasics I think I might go with the superlux hd 330. My first decision for the headphones was the philips shp900s until the price tag on them is mind blowing because the original price was between 60-80. So my second choice was either the samson sr850 or the superlux hd668b but from the reviews I have seen from other KZfaq's is they both have a lot of treble which I don't like. I'm more like a bass head and also I like netural sound where the sound isn't overwhelming. I just want headphones which has natural sound and a good accurate sound stage for mostly gaming without spending a lot of money.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 5 жыл бұрын
Nice! If you're a bass head the 9500 won't do but it's still worth $200 imo and I've said that it was worth way more even back when I got mine for $54. I'm not so much a bass head anymore like I used to be but I think you'll really enjoy the HD330. Try to get those same pads on the one I reviewed. Cory told me the stock pads are garbage. Treble on the 850 is really the only thing holding it back from being a perfect headphone. The Soundstage on it is just ridiculous and for Gaming I do love it although I only plug it into my controller because there's no use for an amp. Way too shrill.

Hey man! I like the 9500 best out of these. 40x is too mid-bass bloaty, metallic treble, recessed mids, boxed in sounding. 850 is a bit too bright in the treble but still a great headphone. I just think the 9500 outshines both. It's got great Soundstage, very crisp, open, and detailed. Bass rolls off and it can sound a bit bright in the upper mids/low treble, but it's a relatively minor thing. Casual listening yeah.. great headphone. I sold a lot of headphones last year but kept the 9500 and HD600. In fact I sold both the 850 and m40x. Check my article. The 9500 would be my top pick because they are more comfortable, better built, and the sound is better imo. The 850's are great but have quite a bit of sibilance in the treble area and can get a bit uncomfortable after awhile. Still amazing for movies/gaming, and reference though. I still have my 9500's and use them a lot. Back when I bought them in 2017 I paid $54 and it was a steal. I glanced at your profile and it looks like you're in India. I did a quick calculation the 9500 in India is 12,730 Rupees which is equivalent of around $177? Is that the price you're getting over there? Let me know. If so, just go with the 850 if you can get it for around $50. Here the 9500 is around $54 at the moment. I still place the value of the 9500 around $200 but I know you want to spend a lot less.

You're still going to need an amp but don't freak out and buy like some ridiculously expensive one. You could get an Objective 2 or an Atom and be perfectly fine. JDS Labs cuts through the BS and sells amazing products at dirt cheap prices. jdslabs.com/ People way over-exaggerate the need for an amp. Yes at 91dB it's not efficient like at all, but most amps nowadays will work fine. I even ran the 600 Ohm out of an E10K and got decent volume levels if that's any indicator. @@vipulrai26 Hey man! 850 has a bit better Soundstage but it's almost negligible. The 850 also has a pretty sharp/piercing treble and will get uncomfortable after awhile. The 9500 is more comfortable and isn't as shrill sounding. It can get a bit hot in the upper mids/low treble area but just sounds better to me overall vs. the 850. It's also built better and feels less flimsy than the 850. So my suggestion is: 9500 and a Blue Yeti. Where are you located?

I have these headphones but the treble is murder. I don't enjoy vocals because they sound shouty. Even some male voices are so harsh to listen to. I agree that bass is a bit more, but it lacks rumble and impact. I tried lots of EQ, but that harshness won't go. I will have to sell these for that.

Yeah man. Agreed. I loved the 850 but did end up selling them because I needed money and didn't use them as much. For whatever reason, that harshness does not manifest when gaming or watching film which I thought was really interesting. Which headphones are you thinking about now?

@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! It's just a different sound signature altogether. The 850 is more of a reference/gaming, open sound while the 50x is for bass heads mostly. I owned a 50 for 5 years. Loved my time with it but I was newer into the hobby back then. The 850 is kind of sibilant though in the 10k area. It can be too much. What will you be using the headphone for mostly?

Yeah man definitely! Didn't really talk about that in the review but I would say so. Just be aware of 8-10k. Could actually help you discern details a bit better though so I'd say it's a good choice! Also do be aware that the bass is fairly lean but not quite as non-existent as a K240. So yeah 850 is awesome for the most part. Where are you from?

@@Lanes25 That's cool man! Have you thought about the K240? Check out my comparison between the 2: homestudiobasics.com/akg-k240-vs-samson-sr850/ I may lean you towards the K240 now that I think about it some more. It's just so pure and true. Bass is a little lean but outside of that it's pretty much a perfect headphone. I admit it's hard to choose one or the other. I suppose you can always EQ down the treble on the 850 if it bothers you. They are both excellent headphones though.

It's probably Sony's most important budget model. I went through at least 10 pairs of them back in the day. I remember buying them at the drug store man. It's so nostalgic to think about it now. At that time, I had no idea there were headphones out there that were considered better. I thought that was about as good as it got!! Haha.

Nice! Yeah the CB-1 is a good all around headphone. Sounds more open than you would think. Great Soundstage for a closed back, in fact they even do better than some open backs as far as that goes. Bass gets a bit bloomy at times, and the mid range is kind of sucked out in a couple spots but overall it's a nice value. Look out for some amp reviews coming..

Hey man! The M40x has more mid-bass and just more bass overall. More recessed mid-range and a less bright treble. The 850 has a rolled off bass, flat mid-range, and very bright treble that gets sibilant. Still a great value and great headphone but not without it's flaws. The only issues with the 40x to me are slightly exaggerated mid-bass (not that big of a deal) and a slightly metallic treble (also not a big deal). Let me know if I can help out further!

Hey again! For a closed back I like the MDR V6 which is the best all around headphone under $100. My review: homestudiobasics.com/sony-mdr-v6-studio-monitor-series-headphones-a-classic/ The 850 would actually be the perfect semi-open headphone because of it's Soundstage and the fact that you could easily pick out flaws due to that bright treble. You may be a bit off put on just how bright it is though. It can get grating but the Soundstage is incredible. I was watching Garden State the other day on DVD and the width of the image is so realistic that I kept thinking the sounds were coming from inside my apartment which actually startled me enough to take them off and look around in a semi-panic. So yeah the hype is warranted especially how cheap they are. You're able to hear so much more going on in the mix. Because the Philips SHP9500's are no longer sold at under $100 (due to them being discontinued) I do think the 850 can kind of take their place, at least for now. Let me know what you think!

I think it really comes down to comfort for gaming. The 850 I think will do better for longer listening sessions with the velour padding. 850 is my current Gaming/Movie/Netflix can. Both have a very similar sound so I wouldn't get too caught up in that. Rolled off bass, bump in the mid-range around 2-3k, bright treble. I mean it varies slightly like, the 668B's treble may be a tad less bright but it's almost a wash. If detachable cable is important, go with 668B. 668B has a bit more warmth in the mid-bass around 100Hz, and doesn't roll off quite as much as the 850. Both very good Soundstage. Also the 850 will be louder without a need for an amp while the 668B pairs pretty well with some sort of amplification. You probably don't even care about an amp but it should be noted. Honestly it's really a toss up here. Check out my comparison and let me know what you think! homestudiobasics.com/samson-sr850-vs-superlux-hd668b-different-signatures/
