Thanks for the review Sam. I've been a casual viewer of your channel for a couple of years, but previously not taken the plunge into OO due to limited space. That's all changed with Hornby launching TT:120, so I really appreciate you reviewing TT.

Thanks for the review, Sam. I've just come back to the hobby and have decided that TT120 is the way to go for me. I have the Scotsman set with the unlit coaches and plan to buy more to build a larger rake. So my choice is to either run half lit and the other half unlit, which I think would look odd. Or, wait until dome one produces an after-market lighting kit. I look forward to more TT120 reviews from you.

Thanks for this Sam. No need to apologise for more TT. Was really hoping you would be reviewing this scale, as I do find your reviews very thorough and helpful. Haven’t taken the plunge yet but once there is a smaller steam shunter I think I’ll be giving it a try too.
@speleokeir
@speleokeir Жыл бұрын
There's a J94 in the pipeline for phse 3 or 4 and at Warley I had a quick chat with Simon Kohler who mentioned another shunter was in the early design stages. Off the top of his head he thought it was the J50. There's also a large tank engine, GWR/BR class 5700 on the way. I also told him I'd love to see a small tender engine e.g. a J15, J36, K1 or Drummond 700. He was playing his cards close to his chest, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of those came out in a couple of years time. They've intially concentrated on the big steam locos because A1/3s, A4s and Coronations and other express locos tend to be very popular and big sellers. I suspect another reason may be that small locos might well take longer in the design phase for TT due to the difficulties caused by lack of space for motors, gears, chips, etc and Hornby are keen to expand the range asap to grow the market, so if big locos can be put into production more quickly it makes sense to concentrate on those first. In the meantime the class 08 diesel is the logical choice for a first 0-6-0 shunter as they fit from Era 3 up until the present day in a huge variety of liveries and they're very popular.

Thanks for the review Sam. With regard to table position in a pullman. You will notice that there are two widths of panel between windows. In the saloon section, if a bay has the wider panel between windows on both sides, then the seating bay behind will have chairs either side of the table, with the table centrally placed in the window. As you look at a 1st class pullman coach from the side, Either the kitchen or a compartment window will typically be to the left. On some variants the seating bay in the saloon, immediatly next to the Kitchen or compartment will have seats againts the wall of the compartment/kitchen but have no facing seating across the table. You can identify these bays from the outside as the window has a narrow panel on the right as you look at it from the kitchen/compartment side. These one sided seating bays can have the table moved to the right as you look in from the side. All other tables should be centrally placed in the window. which is why i assume Hornby have done the same in their 00 model.
@bluebellsalmon
@bluebellsalmon 4 ай бұрын
So it turns out that Hornby have added an additional window and additional half bay of seating that's not in the original Plato, which had a slightly longer kitchen/pantry! The extra window and 2-seat table offset from the window is correct for Cecilia and Chloria which Hornby have produced in the Flying Scotsman pack. However they've labelled the brake coach in that pack as 'Car 64' which was a Parlour car, not a Brake!

The ‘corridor blanking caps’ are Gangway covers - helps provide a safety and noise barrier on the end coach of a rake so passengers don’t find a way onto the track. The ‘toolboxes’ on the under frame are battery boxes; got to keep the lights on in stations when the wheels aren’t turning the dynamo. Great review Sam, very enjoyable. Many thanks for this excellent review. I saw in one of the comments that there are also some continental manufacturers such as Tillig. As I live in France I did a search on one of the train shops i have used in the past...probably the equivalent of Hattons/Rails......... and was amazed at the enormous selection of TT items on offer...even electric turntables,,,ballasted track..loads of scenic items etc all of which I suggest can be used on a British layout...well worth a look perhaps if one is thinking of embarking on a layout.. Presumably there are shops in the UK which are stockists of these continental items.... I was also pleased to see that they offered discounted Hornby TT so have started some purchases via this shop as I am switching to this scale. The prices for Hornby, such as this pullman coach seem, on paper, to be the norm compared to their continental counterparts.

Just as an extra piece of prototype info. As these cars were operated by the Pullman Car Company, to use them you had to pay a supplement on top of your fare that went to Pullman & not the operator of the train. Also, as you said, there are Pullmans in preservation. But you also have the VSOE that operates on the main line. It was (and might still be) based at Stewarts Lane Depot in South London. Keep up the great TT work!!

Hi Sam, you can get the same pick-up solution from Rails of Shef if you want some for a lighting project. The only downside ofcourse is that you have to take the wheel off the axle and you have to one wheel electrically conected to the axle using conductive paint. I have used them to light up some bachmann coaches, they work very well. Looks like Hornbys pickups are a little tight on the axles.

Hi Sam, have you heard that Marklin/Trix have released a model in HO of the Flying Scotsman? Here is the write up: Model: The locomotive has an mfx+ digital DCC decoder and extensive light and sound functions. It also has controlled, high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel in the boiler. 3 axles powered. Traction tires. The locomotive and tender are constructed mostly of metal. The locomotive has a factory-installed smoke unit with speed-dependent, dynamic smoke exhaust and it can be controlled digitally. Dual headlights on the locomotive change over with the direction of travel and there is a lamp on the back of the tender. These lights will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. The lamp on the back of the tender can be changed to a red lamp. A third headlight on the front of the locomotive can be controlled separately as an electric lamp and it can be changed to red. The cab lighting and firebox flickering can be controlled digitally. The lighting on the tender corridor can be controlled digitally. Maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs are used for the lighting. There is an adjustable close coupling with a guide mechanism between the locomotive and tender. The back of the tender has a close coupler with an NEM pocket and a guide mechanism. The buffer height on the locomotive and tender adheres to the NEM. Brake hoses, imitation prototype couplers, and closed cylinder covers are included. Length over the buffers approximately 24.5 cm / 9-5/8". Prototype: Class A3 steam express locomotive with a tender. Version as museum locomotive 60103. The locomotive looks as it did in 1963 with a Corridor tender and smoke deflectors, thus as the locomotive currently looks operational and based at the National Railway Museum in York, England.;;The Flying ScotsmanThe Flying Scotsman, a name, which inspires imagination. ‘Flying Scotsman' was the name of the daily 10:00 AM connection between London and Edinburgh which had been running since 1862. From 1924 London and North Eastern Railway Class A1 ‘Pacific' Number 4472 also carried this name. The A1's were the most powerful locomotives used on the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and were designed by Nigel Gresley its ‘Chief Mechanical Engineer'. On February 24, 1923, it went into operation as LNER number 1472, a year later it was given its famous name and it participated as number 4472 in the British Empire Exhibition in London, which increased its recognition enormously. It became the ‘show' locomotive of the LNER and inaugurated the non-stop ‘Flying Scotsman' (summer only) service on May 1, 1928. For the first time a steam locomotive ran the 393 miles (632 km) between London and Edinburgh on a scheduled service without stopping. How was this possible? Shortly before the first of these runs ‚Flying Scotsman' was equipped with a corridor tender, which not only offered a lot of space for coal and water, but also a corridor to the first carriage of the train. This allowed a crew change during the run. This locomotive set another milestone in 1934. During a test run the ‘Flying Scotsman' became the first steam locomotive in Great Britain to officially reach a speed of 100 mph (160.9 km/h) clear proof for the LNER directors of the suitability of steam locomotives for express train service. During World War II, the ‘Flying Scotsman' had to change its bright green for a sombre ‚Wartime Black'. After the end of the war, it was painted again in LNER ‘apple green'. In addition, it was converted to the class A3. In 1948, after the establishment of British Railways, new colours came into use and its number became 60103. For a time, this locomotive was in ‘express passenger blue' livery and then later ‘BR Green'. Under threat of being scrapped it was purchased by wealthy businessman, Alan Pegler who had it restored to LNER condition. In 1968, it once again hauled a train non-stop from London to Edinburgh. In 1969, it went to the USA and Canada for a promotional tour for British foreign trade. In 1988, it participated in the ‘Aus Steam 88 Festival' in Australia, where it claimed a new nonstop record for steam locomotives of 425 miles (680 km). Now, it was an international celebrity. Financial difficulties led several times to a change in ownership. In 2004, it finally came to the National Railway Museum in York, England thanks to a donation campaign to buy this iconic locomotive. It was completely restored between 2006 and 2016. February 25, 2016 was the big day: For the first time in years the ‘Flying Scotsman' ran again from the London ‘King's Cross' to York, as number 60103 in ‘BR Green' with double chimney and smoke deflectors looking just as it did when it last ran for BR. An emotional moment for the many enthusiasts, who watched it go by. And now, in 2023, this unique steam locomotive is celebrating its 100th anniversary. In addition, it is adorning the H0 range from Märklin and Trix.;Licensed by SCMG Enterprises Ltd. Flying Scotsman® and designs ©SCMG. Flying Scotsman is a National Railway Museum locomotive.Every purchase supports the museum. www.nrm.org.uk/flyingscotsman This model can be found in a DC version in the Trix H0 assortment under item number 22886.; Completely new tooling.Especially intricate metal construction.Many separately applied details.Factory-installed smoke unit with speed-dependent, dynamic smoke exhaust.Cab and tender corridor lighting digitally controlled."World of Operation" mfx+ decoder and extensive light and sound functions included.Buffer height on the locomotive and tender adheres to the NEM. The price in the USA equates to about 485.00 GBP.

RE "Looking at the OO and copying their errors": Yes they did! From everything I've heard, none of the TT models are truly new, they're all downscales of existing OO tooling. The TT Class 66 is, supposedly, literally a downscaled version of the 1990s Lima tooling! (Which is why it's so cheap!) I'll give them some credit for the pickups though, that axle-spring style seems to be the more preferred for retrofitted lighting in OO at the moment, rather than making up wiper pickups. DCC Concepts sell a kit that uses exactly this style of pickup. I'd blame the springing on either that the springs are too small (It's supposed to be a rather loose fit) or on the coach's light weight, it's not an issue you see in OO. It certainly would have been preferable to have these pickups on the APT than the rubbish ones they went with. I don't think that Axle-Point pickups would be overly complicated for the scale; both Kato and Tomix do it in N across whole trainsets that cost as little as this one coach (Eg, the 3-coach 103 Series sets)! Hornby would have gone with this style purely because it's cheaper.

I have these lit pullmans in an Orient Express boxed set, and I like the lights as it adds something when you see the train running (the orient set has a Clan line loco, but I have used them with the Scotsman too). It’s nice to see them in the TT120 scale, but I do think its a little bit more expensive than it should be and that is down to Hornby being sole supplier and no retailers to help with reductions
@speleokeir
@speleokeir Жыл бұрын
I actually think the price is pretty good if you compare it to an equivalent OO coach. There isn't a lit pulllman currently in Hornby's range so the lit coronations are the nearest match at £60.49 (Many unlit coaches have the same RRP). There's a 10% discount for Hornby club members and similar at model shops. So these lit TT coaches are about £15 less (£54.44 compared to £39.52 for TT). If you buy a rake that's quite saving. Bear in mind the production costs are very similar for both scales with labour being by far the biggest proportion of that. Tooling and design costs are the same. Materials are less but only make up a tiny proportion of the overall production costs. The only possible saving is on shipping, assuming Hornby always fill a container which may not be the case. Of course currently with OO you can get used lit Pullmans on Ebay for £25-40, which isn't an option yet for TT. The reality is Hornby are selling them at a competitive price. It's in their interests to do so because they need as many people as possible to buy TT to establish a market and whilst they may have a monoploy of TT at present they are still competing with other scales.They need a high volume of sales rather than a big profit on individual models and keeping prices down is vital for that. In this instance having a monopoly brings the price DOWN as they're cutting out the middleman and can make discounts and offers without upsetting the model shops. At this time the new prices of TT are significantly less for TT than OO (not counting the second market) and Hornby are clearly hoping this will encourage more people, especially new comers to the hobby, to opt for TT rather than OO or N gauge.

@@speleokeir all good points, but I don’t think I have ever seen any monopoly be good for the consumer with large corporates, I think that small traders are the possible exception. Yes, you can get a discount through the TT club and Hornby, and that is great, but value is a very personal thing and is based on peoples situations. I feel the railway hobby industry has got a little out of hand with pricing in general and everything has gotten very expensive. I have no clue how youngsters are supposed to get into the hobby, of course made worse by the CoL issues we face. That said, I really want TT120 to be successful as it does appeal to me and I want a larger range of scenery and accessories available. The boxes underneath the coaches are battery boxes (filled with wet cell batteries like you get under car bonnets) to power the coach - NOT ‘tool boxes’ Also as this is a kitchen car there will also be a gas cylinder under there to feed the kitchen cooking equipment. Finally, Pullman cars were never provided with end doors (to stop you falling out of the ends of the train) - they were entirely open (as per the Hornby model) with gangway shields (the separately supplied accessories used to plug the gap.

Hi Sam, I'd actually say the price is pretty good if you compare it to an equivalent OO coach. Bearing in mind the production costs are very similar. It's about £15 less than a Hornby OO lit Coronation (the nearest equivalent) or an unlit LNER teak. If you buy a rake £15 less soon mounts up. BTW I agree that it would be nice to have the option to have lit or unlit versions of ALL coaches. I fact I emailed Simon Kohler suggesting exactly that last week, both for TT and OO. I suspect this would be very popular. His reply was: 'Duly Noted' which I took to mean it's something Hornby might consider assuming there's enough demand and costs aren't prohibitive. The more modellers who ask for this, the more likely they'll do it.

Good honest review. I think that you might be expecting separate details where they don't seem to exist in the scale, just as there are no sprung buffers anywhere in this scale (waste of time). I've yet to buy an Arnold coach but my seven or eight by Tillig have moulded handles the same as the Hornby. The Tillig models are also a bit more expensive..... I'm moving up from N Gauge where separate handrails are very rare, so I don't miss them.

The only concern I have is that Hornby is going to ruin it with high prices so that the average modelers can not afford this scale. In Italy we can call pullman any bus. The other word is... autobus, which we shorten in... bus. The italian word, corriera, is by far the less used, and never applies to city buses, but only to long distance coaches. So the brit words not only took the lead but also, as in the case of pullman, shifted from steel to rubber.

Hi Sam, another great and informative video. While I have no plans to go into TT scale (I'll leave that to my friend David who has trains from G to T (1/450)) I do find these videos interesting. One thing that I believe hurts TT scale is that while it is smaller than OO, and bigger than N, it is limited by its size so it doesn't have the mass or the ability to have the detail of OO, while not having the space savings of N. Kind of a "jack of all trades, and an expert at none."

And this is why Hornby are only selling direct and refusing to supply TT through retailers. After offering the initial sets at such a decent price, the locomotives now being released and coaches are very expensive and the full cost is going straight into Hornbys pocket. £47 for a small scale coach with a plastic chassis even if it is lit, is very expensive. A rake of 6 coaches is close to £300.

I’d love to see if the train set coaches can be retro fitted with lighting to avoid having mixed lighting when extending the train set rake 😮

Perhaps Hornby or Bachmann should consider complementing this little gem with a model of the North Staffordshire Railway battery locomotive No. 1 (now preserved) - especially as a version appears on recent episodes of "Thomas and Friends" as 'Stafford'.

As some one who's help restore some Pullman cars and Brighton belle ones , and at the old Pullman works in Brighton,,can say that every Pullman was quite unique inside,And say a seat from one car wouldn't fit another one,,but I love them and was great working on these too.and these new hornby ones look great.but I am sticking with 00 😊

@@ianstransporthistorystuff8175The original Plato had a longer kitchen/pantry and one fewer bodyside windows, so the bay of seating with the offset table, which existed on 22-seat Pullman First Kitchen Cars, did not on Plato which was only a 20-seat Car. So they've used a single design of Kitchen Car (correct for Cecilia and Chloria) and chosen a name which didn't apply to that batch. It's not as ridiculous a problem as labelling one of their brake cars as Car 64 - that's a parlour car, not a brake car!

A good review as always, but I think its a little harsh on a couple of things... I think that the lights are a good thing and although they could have been refined I think it's above and beyond what a lot of people would have expected on a smaller-than-OO scale... so personally, I like it... I do wonder how much extra load they will impart on a loco if there is, say, 5 or 6 carriages involved given the lighting pickups? I wonder, would they impose a great enough increase in the load to foreshorten the life of the locos necessarily small motor? The other thing I noticed was the lean on the carriage when it goes around the second radius curve... from here it looked very accute and I did wonder if another carriage might cause a derailment by falling over!

Quite an impressive review.. I have not seen an uncoupler yet to separate the new couplings? I'm curious about doing shunting with TT. freight wagons. The lamps are very nice, but if the rolling resistance means shorter trains , I'm not sure.. The smaller scale would be good for longer trains on a layout, so I'm not sure if I would want to sacrifice train length for lights in this small scale?

I think those electrolytic capacitors might eventually leak! I would imagine that the circuit board is the most costly element and explains the high price. If you want a Pullman train, you probably would be well-advised to order the train set! My William Whitelaw has started to develop wheel spin on curves. You might try connecting up all the coaches you have and see if you get this issue. I think a drawback with TT is likely to be the number of coaches that can be hauled! Thanks for uploading.

Springs have a "handedness". In one direction they will tighten up on the axle and in the other they will loosen. If they are all put on in the same way I would think the coach will run more freely in one direction than the other and it looked like that may be the case from your tests.

interesting lamp solution, but too bad there's no overhead lights. especially if they had a dcc socket in there maybe with some manual switches for dc. for the price point i personally would've liked to see some more premium solutions considering i can get some decent oo coaches for a similar price.

I’d say, given the currency exchange ratio, that 40 £ would come out to $48.41 according to the current exchange rate, or about what I’d expect to pay for an N-scale coach with lighting, though none of mine have individually lit table lamps, nor window shades; they have a lighting strip hidden in the ceiling. As for separately fitted details, they’d be quite fragile at this scale unless they’re rather chunky, like the ones on the under frame. I’d say Sam is being a wee bit too critical; I’d give this model a B- (about 80-83 out of 100), and only because they didn’t provide for a lighting-only decoder, or a reed-switch so you could turn off the lights on DC (analog) operation.

Not all pullman seating was in facing pairs across a table some seats were one sided to a table, perhaps that's the reason for that offset to the window. Your interior view shows it is indeed a single sided table arrangement.
@PzVITiger131

What's the advantage of TT vs N Scale? I decided many years ago that when I hopefully get to build a layout I would use N so I can fit more into what ever space I have available. I can't see a reason to use TT instead.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains Жыл бұрын
I think if you’ve already established yourself in a scale, TT probably doesn’t have much to offer. The advantages of TT over N is that it’s slightly less fiddly, and there’s opportunity for more detail due to the extra scale!
