Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom Unboxing
Aaron unboxes the Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom, one of the family members in the Galaxy S 4 line of devices. Available online through Negri Electronics, the Galaxy S4 zoom sports a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display (540x960 pixels), 1.5 GB of RAM, 2,330 mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz. The real star of the show is the 16-megapixel camera that's attached to the back, as it offers a wealth of modes for all picture types. In essence, it's a fusion of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Samsung Galaxy Camera, but if you're not in a market that offers it, it's a pricey option versus buying subsidized from a carrier.

It has a superior zoom lens, but image quality has yet to be determined. The sensor on the GS4 Zoom is relatively small, and its aperture range can't hold a candle to the 1020's constant f/2.2. They're also touting the 1020's lossless digital zoom, though I don't think it goes as far as 10x like this phone does. I'm sure people will do head-to-head comparisons once the 1020 is available.

A big selling point of the 1020 is its lossless digital zoom. It can't zoom as far as the GS4 Zoom, but it maintains a constant f/2.2 throughout. I'm interested in both phones, but the lack of apps on WP8 is disconcerting.

The sensor itself is square-ish, however the lens atop it is a circle. The far corners of the sensor cannot be used as they are covered by the edge of the lens (remember, the lens is a circle, and the sensor is the same height and width of the lens, so therefore the corners are cut off.) Because you can't record a circle image, the resulting circle image is cropped - in widescreen mode, you see 38 megapixels, if you'r shooting in 4:3 ("square") aspect ratio, you see a different 38 megapixels.

Someone should just make a case with a camera like this one that attaches to the galaxy S4 just like a case and connect using microUSB port and an advanced camera app to show S4 users some love

A bigger lens collects more light and creates a better image even at the same megapixel, then you have the zoom, and 3 mp on top of all that, its a good camera!

@tromain27, the Nokia 1020 much like the 808 pureview takes up to 41 megapixel pics but the default is set at 8mp, it uses a technique called over sampling so that when you zoom into the pic your zooming into very small pixels crammed together for the clear zoom shots. I've had the 808 and my only let down was the OS.

This is a funky looking phone with that camera. Just get the original S4 or at least the S4 Active. Samsung is just pushing it with this device.

After the launch of 1020, I think the thickness of S4 Zoom lens become funny. Digital Zoom is really great. For a camera phone, of course. I didn't see any special thing in S4 Zoom as a better camera than a camera phone, though...

You can bet 1 million on that, I'm not a dev. I used to think just like you regarding the open-source aspect, then I realized it means the world to ANYONE, not only devs. Because being open-source, means that it gives devs the tools to do their project, which in turn, ALL OF US, can enjoy! So it's a pretty big deal. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if you think stock Android is ugly, you can modify it with a million mods, to your liking. I think WP is hideous, can I mod it's looks? NO...

Hopefully getting this phone for £75 on Tuesday :) I don't like the weight of the phone, but I like how from one side it looks like a camera and the other side it looks like a phone. I had the original S4 and I miss the SlowMo video this will be my main phone and my spare phone will be a LG L40 Both these phones have gorilla glass which is awesome :)

I think the design is neat, but from what I've seen around the web, the image quality just isn't there. You'd think with a phone this dedicated to photography that the image quality would blow normal phone cameras out of the water.
