The next part of the 'hard suspension diaries' was to replace a height sensor. I also replaced the rain sensor to try and solve another issue I've been having.

Nice video ! Not sure if you had already done so but it’s important to raise the suspension to its highest setting ( if possible ) and then to disconnect the battery. Sometimes when replacing these height sensors when the battery is connected could immediately cause the car to adjust its height which could be hazardous

You really should drive with your center display set to 4x4. It tells you when the suspension has reached height and can show you when height sensors are failing by the wheels bouncing up and down or red bars. I appreciate the you’re having a problem with a different system though.

So hope you find the answer to this, I’ve got a Disco4, the ride is rock hard!! Any bump in the road is like landing a Boeing 747. Characteristics are strange, it still ‘floats’ down the road but any slight road imperfection it thuds throughout the car. I’ve got a set of 19”s going on this weekend to see if it helps, if not my local Indy has said to replace all 4 airbags and struts (these are one unit on d4 rather than separate items) hoping you can find a quick fix 😂

God I loved driving my old wagon. Started with P38, right through to your 4.4TD model. Gave up on them when I got older and constant faulting became an irritant and no longer fun (yes, I did used to enjoy getting hands dirty). Went Touareg V8 tdi and to be honest in everyday life it’s more capable, without getting under it once a month to fix it. Nope it hasn’t the same graceful feeling behind the wheel, but I reached the age where that mattered less then reliability
@SamsMotors
@SamsMotors 3 жыл бұрын
It's important to remember that the V8 TDI 2nd generation Touareg is a generation newer than the L322 (2010 vs 2002). Capability wise though, the L322 probably still has the edge in terms of off road ability, and there's no comparison in the classiness department.

What I have learned or can see from your videos is that your Range Rover is no longer the cheapest Range Rover, since you meticulously exchange everything that can only be exchanged. In the meantime, your Range Rover should be quite expensive to very expensive, just from the amount of work and the hours sunk for repairs, video and editing. I bought my Ranger Rover L322 / M62B44 (2003) 6 years ago, 6000€, 210,000km. From time to time he sees an oil change and that's about it. I don't even pay attention to the colorful lights in the display anymore, because I've learned that it's just prone to the smallest electronic errors, basically it just keeps running and running and running.... meanwhile 315,000 km on the clock😂 However, your videos are very good for other RR drivers with problems, no question. Still, you're paying a lot of tuition for..

It depends on your perspective... I don't count the time and effort repairing and making videos as I enjoy it as a hobby. Therefore, it's free to me. The parts themselves are usually purchased as cheaply as possible (take my A/C compressor as an example - I paid only £150 for it as opposed to £450 direct from LR). Considering that a lot of these repairs would have to be done on every Range Rover (not just mine), my total outlay is probably still less than the majority of 4.4 TDV8 owners after 1 year.

My special program and suspension control are also off, I Lower and rising it by my key. I want to ask you that can be the front sensor? I already check the air system but seems not one leak. Love the videos.....I too have malfunctioning rain and light sensors, but you didn't specify how yours were failing. Is it, like mine, whereby when the auto lights are switched to "auto", they come on whatever the ambient light OR is it that when they are switched to auto, they don't come on at all even at night? Likewise, my wipers when switched to auto will wipe the screen whether there is rain / water present or not, as opposed to simply not wiping ever, if on "Auto". I am trying a new self adhesive pad first as mine is patchy / cloudy and was clearly not changed when Autoglass replaced the cracked windscreen! I figure that as there are 2 sensors in the unit, it is unlikely that BOTH have failed. However if that doesn't fix it, it looks like it's out with the drivers seat to check those 4 wires. If it was the wires going open circuit, I think this would mean that the sensors work by INHIBITING the lights / wipers in the absence of darkness / rain and allow the circuits to function ONLY when the ambient light drops low and or rain starts........... Does this logic follow? Would there be anything to differentiate between a failed sensor unit and the 4 wires fault?
@SamsMotors
@SamsMotors Жыл бұрын
99% sure it’ll be the splice. When the rain sensor is inop, it defaults to normal intermittent wipers.

Don't know if you have any insight, but when I got my 06 RR SC, it was on its bump stops. Someone had driven it like that and the front right strut, if you pull the rubber cap off under the hood, sits 1 inch higher than the left one. So much that the cap won't go all the way back on. I imagine the banging on the bump stops rammed the strut so hard, it slipped in its housing a little? So when it is sitting on the bump stops, the front right of the vehicle sits an inch lower now. Now I reset the codes, and got the air suspension working again by replacing the relay in the back. After that, I did the turn steering wheel full left and right to reset the system. But somewhere during this process, the sensors got calibrated sitting on the bump stops with the front left being 1 inch lower. My question is, do you know what I did to trigger it to calibrate? I don't have a diagnostic tool other than the typical OBDII tool. So I couldn't have triggered the calibration on purpose.

Yep, everything I've taken off so far has been OK rust-wise. It's only just turned 10 years old after all - but yeah it lived down in Sussex for most of its life. Headlight levelling is done via the air suspension system keeping the whole car level - it doesn't adjust the headlights per se, so yes I suppose they are levelled via the ride height sensors. Height sensor was about £60.

It has crossed my mind - but the strange thing about it is if the Rangie has been parked for a couple of days, the first few minutes of the drive it behaves impeccably! But then the ride gradually gets stiffer and bumpier after a couple of miles. So that's why I think it's something electronic.

@@SamsMotors Great, thank you for the note and replying so quickly.... Do you think that the only want to get to that part of the loom is having the seat out or at least rocked back with the bolts out? I am wondering if I would be able to get under the carpet without such a drastic disassembly..... Interesting that I had the rear door card off over the weekend as the switch had been pushed in since purchase and just got around to fixing it..... Also had the rear camera 'blue screen' issue... That just needed the spoiler being unbolted and a lot of wiggling of joints.... Guessing it was a slight corrosion issue... You sir were bang on the money.... Thanks... Decided to try and tackle getting at the loom just now... Without taking the carpet up it is a struggle, but it can be done... Getting the cover plate off is the hardest part to be fair... Need to take out the trim surrounding the bonnet release and then have a fight to get the plastic cover slide out at a lather odd angle.... Anyway. Bit if digging around I found the red and green wires (for those having similar issues, they are spliced closer to the seat than the peddles.... They were taped (as factory) but when I gave the tape a tug they came away with visible signs of corrosion... So cut back the wire a little, stripped them, and then joined them using one of those little heat shrink solder doobries you can join wires with using a lighter.... I think the solder should minimise the risk of corrosion in the future and the heat shrink is glued. I couldn't be bothered to drag my solder station to the drive.... Anyway. All working..... Must admit that I also found the bundle of red and orange wires (7 or 8 of them) that were also spliced in the same way which I also treated to a new join, given the one taped, was looking decidedly dodgy, although I have no idea what those ones do.... As with all these things putting it back together was a much more simple task. One thing I did try and focus on is positioning all the spliced wires on top the bundle, so there is less likelihood of those sitting in any moisture. Thanks again

Thanks Sam - had a ride height error code, used my Gap IID to find which one had the issue, swapped the height sensor out - all in less that 45 mins :-). Thanks for the video, made me realise it was something I could tackle and the video showed me how to do it 🙂

Cheers for the tip!! That’s awesome, glad you managed to sort it yourself. That’s the whole gist of my channel is to get folks to have a go themselves, so that’s great.

I thought the height sensor wiring was under the car along the chassis. I could be wrong on that model

Think you're right. The module is in the rear right corner of the car too, so I presume the rear sensors just run straight over to it.

Also - if you do a calibration - can you video it! Good luck - hope you get it sorted.

I filmed the first calibration I did (see the 2nd episode I uploaded on the Range Rover) but I will definitely film the next time too.

Just typical ..... you think you’ve got it tracked down and then after you’ve treated it to some new bits the bloody thing still wont work.
