देवता और दानव दोनों को ज्ञात था कि समुद्र में रत्नों का समावेश है। दोनों उन रत्नों को प्राप्त करने के अभिलाषी थे। दोनों अमर होना चाहते थे। किंतु किसी एक के पराक्रम से वे प्राप्त नहीं किए जा सकते थे। ना देवता अकेले ये पुरुषार्थ कर सकते थे, ना दैत्य अकेले ये परिणाम पा सकते थे। इसलिए समुद्र मंथन के लिए दोनों की सम्मिलित शक्तियों का एकजुट होना आवश्यक था। अतः दोनों ने मिलकर प्रयास किया और कई अमूल्य रत्न प्राप्त किए।
