Just an experiment using pitched percussion. Instead of tapping steady beats, four simple melodic figures enter and leave. I think there is just about room in the script for this to be considered a reasonably authentic approach. And far more authentic than some of the stuff you can can find on YT. And, frankly, far better.

I'm taking a class in combinatorial mathematics and my professor referenced this video in his lectures. Beckett likely uses a specific type of binary sequence known as Gray Code (or reflected binary code), where each successive sequence differs from the previous one by only one bit. This ensures that only one character changes (enters or exits) between each scene. For example, the Gray Code for four bits would generate 16 sequences (from 0000 to 1111), ensuring each possible combination of characters is represented exactly once. Each bit in the sequence corresponds to one of the four characters. A change in a bit (from 0 to 1 or 1 to 0) indicates a character entering or leaving the stage. The stage directions follow the order of these binary sequences, dictating which characters are on stage at any given time.

Oh. Yeah, I wrote the music. I found the footage and just added it. I couldn't find any film of the entire piece, so it just fades out, but as you can see, the music just sort of arranges itself so it could be used for the whole piece.

Was pitched percussion part of the original work?
@suttie1891
@suttie1891 4 жыл бұрын
Not specifically. The original work specifies 4 different percussion instruments, eg claves, woodblock, chimes, each keeping a steady beat. I'd been listening a lot of minimalist stuff, like Steve Reich, Terry Riley etc, so I took my inspiration from that,

Beckett had very clear and specific instructions for the performance of his plays, with good reason. If you understood Quad you would not have ruined it in the way you have. You might bear that in mind next time you use someone’s work in a way that distorts it.

Just popping in to say, I don't have that account anymore, but stumbled upon this, having forgotten about it. The video clip is something I found online, but I wrote the four interlocking musical parts. Anyone who wants to is very welcome to use the music if they would like to perform it. I can provide a score for each of the four parts, but seriously, if your musicians need a score for this, then don't give up the day job.
