WONDERFUL PerFORMANCE. Korngold composed some absolutely wonderful music. Good to see James Conlon as he and I were in Juilliard together years ago. I went on to become a chef and he a world class musician.

This was a hard period for Thomas Hampson, lasted many years in his privte life. We can rightly say he was ill, but his art will succeed in the coming times, as we can see and hear. Great artist, great voice Thoma Hampson!

@papoocanada One never gets tired of Tosca ;) but I definitely support your point, this opera should be performed more often!

The young Ukranian baritone Andrei Bondarenko, winner of the leider prize at the recent Cardiff Singer of the World, puts this performance in the shade, he is so superior in every way - he has a great career ahead of him. Go to the singer of the world site and you can hear his performance - simply sublime!

He doesn't actually. Hampson feels the music to the very depths of his soul
@garymartin7778 Жыл бұрын
Bondarenko sang it beautifully vocally, but his German was quite poor. Hampson sings it almost flawlessly. He understands every word and nuance and expresses them wonderfully through the music. It helps that he lives in Austria and is fluent in German! As Mr. Wright wrote above, it wasn't his best performance, but it was still excellent.

Oh my good... this is soooo beautiful! His German is excellent and I cannot stop listening to this piece, I have it from his CD 'The very best of TH' - excellent. And his last 'zurück' is simply beautiful.... so full of passion and so soft and so carefully sung.

This opera was composed when Korngold was in his 20s--- the flowering of young genius left Germany in the 30s and composed movie scores including Robin Hood --- with the rise of Hitler he stayed in the US as he was Jewish

This aria has a very high tessitura. Mr. Hampson has a very secure vocal technique, and knows how to pull this off. He is, however, no longer in the bloom of vocal youth, and it does show. The very close miking does not help, either.

All of those who think this is an operetta song, better listen to the difficulties even a singer like Hampson has with the tessitura and the vocal techniques that are recommended here. "Die tote Stadt" is extremely challenging for both tenor and baritone.

You can tell that Tommy is sick here... he's not even making full phrases. There's a recording posted here on KZfaq that he made in 1995 with a score animation. THIS is Thomas Hampson's aria. After all, he just won the 1981 Met council auditions with it.

He sings the phrases very disjointedly which is generally unlike him. Some of his vowels are a bit oddly formed as well in more than the fact that they are German.

And now he's singing big boy dramatic Repertoire despite his voice not being dramatic! Go back to singing lyric repertoire like this Thomas or you'll have another crisis like this!
@georgecarlson5836 Жыл бұрын
I've certainly heard Hampson in much better control of his instrument, & frankly, was disappointed with the music, which qualifies, in my judgement, as an "almost" melody.
