Hi! We got another video out on time somehow, glad to see you here. So this was a fun video, lots of interesting production trivia here. Tyler wrote the script with the team editing it and he edited the whole video alone so claps for him (I'm in San Jose on vacation this week) You may not have noticed but i voiced this script to the beat of the samurai champloo soundtrack in kind of a spoken word/ hip hop style. I had the idea cause i like to stick to the themes of what we're covering. Usually its my job to do the music but i was gone, so Ryan took on the challenge of matching the rhythm of the voice over to music we can ACTUALLY use, so big props to him, that's VERY hard to do. Also thanks to DJ Cutman for letting us use his excellent music for this. And there you have it, a strange 15 minute rap track on samurai champloo mixed by three people 1000's of miles apart but we did it, and we're very proud lol. I love this video. ALSO HAPPY 50K! Grant is doing FLCL next week, but we will be brainstorming a 50k special with a guest hopefully coming very very soon. Thank you so much. On to 100k! -Mike

First time here and I have to say, I'm impressed with the quality of the video and sound. I noticed the spoken word and thought how perfect it was for the topic, much respect! I'll subscribe and watch a few of your back log. If they are half as good as this, I'll be permanently glued to the channel! Have a great evening guys! P.S. the script hit the feels deep! The big three were just that for a reason. These old, often shorter animes carry a much deeper meaning in them most of the time, which is why they feel so great to watch. While they're not there week in week out for years on end, they tend to stick with you much more at certain points. Samurai champloo reminds me of an amazing summer where i just watched 2-3 episodes every night, and it really stuck with me as one of the greater animes out there.

I'm probably reading a bit much into this, but i personally think Jin's glasses is a symbolism hint in of itself. throughout the journey Jin wore it while travelling as Ronin, after killing his Master and leaving the dojo, meandering aimlessly with no direction. everytime a tragedy occurs (fell into a river, almost killed by the blind assasin,etc) his glasses always found its way to him. and, he didn't wear glasses on the flashbacks either. Only at the last episode in which he lost his glasses, and in his quote saying that he had finally found meaning and finally approving Mugen as a friend. after they go on separate journey, Jin is no longer wearing the glasses, and can see just fine as he has found his direction in life.

woa i never thought of it that way.. i always thought that he wore those glasses because of something his sensei had told him. i don't remember the exact words tho i'm sure he said something like "Your eyes see too much" and indicated that because of his rare strength, he would always be alone. because of that moment i had thought that he wanted to hide his strength, that he could "see too much" by wearing those glasses, because in fact he didn't want to be alone.. this might be a stretch but i still wanted to put my opinion out there

Funny thing, sunflowers do actually have an aroma, but it's only when you let them ripen and harvest the seeds that you smell it. When the head begins to sag, indicating ripeness, you sever the head and find that there's little nubs, one atop each seed, that pop off and are discarded. In the act of brushing aside those nubs you get this sap on your hands (which is dried nectar, since the nubs are sepels), and the pollen from the anthers atop each sepel sticks to the sticky glue-like nectar. As you pry open the head and loosen the seeds, the tissue holding them in will further coat your hands in another kind of sap which has a strong but somehow unremarkably indescript scent. The stuff doesn't rub off and is a bitch to remove, perhaps as bad ir worse than pine tree sap, if you've ever climbed an evergreen as a kid you'll know what I mean. I'd like to think that it furthers the concept explained in the video, because up until the end, when the experience is ripened, does the hindsight hit you, and boy does it stick.

i actually had a different interpretation of the ending. there was an ongoing motif in the story; they would separate frequently but then they would always wind up together again. so, this ending wasn’t an “ending.” i interpreted it as them separating, only to cross paths again.

Personally, I came up with my own little ending. Throughout the episodes I noticed that each of them had people to return to. Fuu mentioned how she was trying to find the guts to tell that sickly mother the truth about her son, or Mugen to eventually find that police women he helped, or Jin finding the lady he saved and how she ended up at the refugee. They all have people to eventually return to, a new reasoning. As you said, I definitely think they’ll end up finding each other again. The paths they took was all connected to one trail.

I really liked this video but I’ve gotta say I feel like dismissing Fuu as the typical anime girl really misses the forest for the trees, and ignoring the fact that she’s the driving force behind the action in nearly every episode might be part of why the story comes off as so thin to you. She’s the one who opens up to people, she’s the reason the show moves in the directions it does, she’s the one who shows Mugen and Jin that opening up isn’t a bad thing. The whole video feels like you’re talking around her as if she’s no more important than the graffiti gangsters or the Scandinavian guy and it really sucks because that desperate expectation to see the story be about the samurai and not the adolescent girl coping with loss and trying to find closure that she’s never going to get is what kept me from really loving this show when I first watched it. I’d go so far to argue that Mugen and Jin are secondary characters to her, as they don’t get near as much focus. Think about all the time we spend with just Fuu taking in the reality of her situation, all the times we see her getting people to see that life isn’t just one path. She’s a young woman with nothing but a set of dice and a knife to her name. She’s just as much part of that struggle for purpose.
@shawnatlast
@shawnatlast 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. She gets the short stick nearly always, mostly due to what people expect from the show. She's the pivot of the story, much of the show and its pathos is driven from Fuu herself, her actions and motivations or lack thereof. The other two are just tagging along. She's also fun and entertaining in many episodes when the other two were brooding and bored. There was never a dull moment. Without her, the center, samurai champloo wouldn't be half as good, it would lose much of its meaning, and just become a tale of two rival samurai who want to best each other. The show instead is about three aimless lovable fools looking to find some meaning/purpose in life, but watanabe's talent is making this work by knowing when/where to put the focus, and he uses episodic storytelling to his advantage. His shows end up more rewarding with time

Samurai Champloo is an all time anime classic. It tells a simple message with very little episodes, that "life is a journey, you stumble, you rise, you meet people, you solve life's problems, you eat, you laugh, you learn and eventually you die". But in the end, life is all about purpose, as purpose drives the journey. And that's what this beautiful anime teaches...

Actually. In Japan a Samurai's daughter is also a Samurai. Fuu is by default a Samurai because of that. Towards the ending episodes one of the bad guys wanted her to commit suicide because she's a Samurai's daughter. That being said, this show is 3 Samurais on a journey. Ignoring her shows that you need to do more research on the show or watch it a few more times to understand it further. Furthermore, I feel like she's what brings them together whenever they fall apart. She's easily the most important character in the show given that the entire journey is about her finding closure with the death of her mother and the absence of here father. Along the way, Mugen and Jin found their own resolutions.

Yin and Yang man. Why does nobody mention Yin and Yang when talking about Jin and Mugen
@stavborochov1673
@stavborochov1673 3 жыл бұрын
Turns out I wrote this comment twice and someone asked for an explanation on the other one so there you go. Kinda wrote that a long time ago and I dont remember now all the details about the show but I have an explanation for Jin atleast. so yin and yang is two personalities each one is dominant with either the energy and thoughness, or with being gentle and mindfull. So Jin is the gentle and smart while mugen is the though and hard. Now the idea about yin and yang is that they both have just enough of the other personality type to complete eachother, its the idea that opposing people can still have stuff in common and complete/ compliment eachother, this is why although Jin and Mugen hated each other when the series started, they found themselves sticking together until by the end of all their journeys they understood what they ment for each other and how they need one another. The one example I thought of is when Jin fought the samurai guy at the end of the show (dont remember the name but the hyped up one who was a master or something I dont remember). The whole fight Jin was obviously losing because he was only using his already known fighting style, but what gave him the win was when he did a very Mugen esc move, and charged in knowing he will get hurt but didn't care, which is exactly the type of rushing in mugen usually does. Samurai Champloo just gets soooo much better with age and more rewatching. People called it the "lesser" Cowboy Bebop, but I'll go so far to say that Champloo will likely hold up better with time than Bebop. The classic Edo-era setting and a more fleshed-out theme do wonders for it.

Its more uplifting with equally tragic charcters, and fun, that alone makes it like me more, and i am a bit of a weeb. And i think ultimately both fight because both mugen and jin are both lost and just now how to fight till they meet each other. I am glad we et a bitter sweet but not tragic solution here, o all three, fuu isnt that stock of a character.

This video is great but I definitely agree with you that all the characters were immediately endearing in their own ways. In a show like this where the only throughline of each episode are the characters, it’s critical that they are relatable enough, or at the very least interesting enough, to hold your attention. Samurai Champloo holds up in part because both its primary and secondary characters make such a strong first impression and unfold as they go.

I disagree about Fuu though. I didn't feel dismissing her as the typical anime girl sums her up. There's a lot of significance in her character. She's 15, she's an orphan, she has no martial arts skills, powers or anything like what Jin & Mugen have. But she's significant in saving their lives multiple times, using the little she has (wits, determination, clever problem solving and sociability). She's the secret glue Jin & Mugen use as permission to travel and do life with each other. Neither of those guys had to honour the coin toss; you see neither Mugen or Jin submit to the requests or power of anyone other than themselves. Yet, it's precisely because of Fuu's absolute weakness in comparison to them which allows both of them to be bound by their agreement to her. They willingly submit to a stupid coin toss agreement from a 15 year old orphan girl, because, they don't have to. It's precisely because Fuu is so 'insignificant' that they are able to submit to her agreement. They give Fuu significance, and Fuu is the excuse they give themselves to not fight each other, for long enough to become friends. Otherwise, both Jin & Mugens' values necessitate they fight. Fuu's very important to the plot. And I think her presence shows us that the Fuu's in our lives, have an irreplaceable significance. The adventure would never have happened without Fuu. Fuu is the catalyst; Fuu is the reason the adventure happened at all. So here's to all the Fuu's in life who seem to have no significance at all, but without them, the adventures of our lives and the alliances of otherwise would-never-be-friends would not happen.
@piach.6936
@piach.6936 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like Fuu deserves more credit than that.. sure she isn't a badass fighter but that doesn't make her boring! her character is so important, and central to the story to me. She is the reason they departed on this journey, she really showed Mugen and Jin that it's okay and helpful to open up, she brought a deeper and more emotional side to the show and was necissary for Mugen and Jin's development. Also her whole story arc of her trying to find closure and her own purpose in life was great tbh

Man I wish I knew how to make videos like this. I for sure can ramble on for atleast 20 min about how Jin and Mugan are a representation for ying and yang.
@stavborochov1673
@stavborochov1673 3 жыл бұрын
@C. J. B. This move is what ended the fight, signifying how Jin needs the reckless side that Mugen represents. other than that I remember at the last episode when Jin and Mugen almost die they lay there on the beach infront of eachother and it resembles the yin and yang symbol so thats another thing.
