Sometimes his mere presence was enough to laugh, and the fact you didn't know what crazy antics he had in store for you. A true genious!

I love that line! Aykroyd killed it in this scene. The line and his goofy facial expression when he says it. Timeless. And Belushi was definitely 'the shit'! 😂👍

The original cast of SNL were the best! Coked up comedy writers and comedians coming up with great original funny stuff! I was a 15,and I watched the first episode and was hooked!

I was 17 when I saw this movie in a Long Island theatre in Christmas 1977. The Italian kids I went to high school with went WILD at the opening shot of Travolta walking down the street.

I was 17 in 1977, too. The movie theatre was packed, not one empty seat when Saturday Night Fever came out. I remember watching this exact episode on SNL when it originally aired. Always loved Belushi doing the samurai skits. Where did the years go??? 🤷🏾‍♀️

@Jim McCracken I welcome your friendship. Many fond memories, including the disco dances in high school. SNL was insanely popular back then, much more so than today. BTW a lot of the mobsters in Goodfellas, including Henry Hill, lived nearby; I know many of the locations in the film and remember the Lufthansa heist at JFK in 1978.

@Jim McCracken life wasn't perfect back then, I don't want others reading this to misconstrue, but compared to today it is literally nite and day. The division, the hate, the ignorance, the envy, greed and selfishness is extremely disappointing. They existed back then too but not where I grew up and never this extreme.

It's tragic that he always surrounded himself with white ppl. He had an astounding career in football. His Dream Team got him off unbelievably innocent. Luckily, the Goldman family got him convicted in their civil suit. Now the Juice is Loose. You don't hear about him anymore, but he's definitely living a comfortably secret life for sure.

For those who are unaware, John Belushi was the first choice for the role of Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters but he died just before production. For me, that's always been a major "what could have been" moment in history.

SNL in its prime. What talent! Look at what they could do with just 7 Not Ready for Prime Time Players instead of the 17 cast members they use now. Belushi was a master at his craft. Plus a cleverly written premise with 3 separate complete sets in one sketch. Ultimate irony....OJ as a priest!

Thank you for mentioning Gilda Radner, she was so hilarious in many of these classic SNL skits. I was made doubly sad when her husband and comedy film legend Gene Wilder passed a few years back. They are sorely missed. May their memory be a blessing.

I'd come around to believing a stuntman did "Joliet Jake's" backflips and cartwheels down the center aisle of the "Triple Rock Baptist Church" in "The Blues Brothers". But now watching Belushi bust his moves on the dance floor in this sketch, I've circled back to believing he probably did that all himself. Dang!

John also did back flips when he & Danny were the "musical guests" on SNL back then. The show was live-can't fake that on a live show! He was an athlete in high school in my home town. This was one of my all time favorite skits of his! So much talent in 1 skit! I thought up a few jokes about the samurai sword & OJ--but they probably wouldn't get printed!

One night in Nassau in 1980, Belushi went on stage with the Grateful Dead for their encore, US Blues. And yes, he did a couple of cartwheels.

I used to stay up late as a kid just to watch SNL because it was the funniest show on TV back then. Belushi dancing in a white Samurai costume had me in stitch’s. Still hilarious after all these years. The original show was so damn funny.

John Travolta was the scheduled host and left everybody hanging on Saturday night. O.J. saved the show last minute and did a monologue almost 20 minutes long ( wearing a conehead!)while the writers furiously rewrote the show. True story.

What a talent! He made the whole world laugh until we cried. Then he left us and we cried until we could laugh again. He was just passing thru, staying just long enough to remind us just how absurd it all is, so laugh, enjoy, burn bright, and exit, stage right, before it becomes boring. I'm, just glad I was here to see it all first hand. There will never be anyone ever like him. And, there never should be.

These sketches are meta on so many levels. Belushi's Samurai character was based on a character portrayed by Toshiro Mifune in Akira Kurosawa's film Yojimbo. Then he adapts it to topical scenarios with hilarious results. Belushi's comic genius never fails to astonish me.
