A playthrough of Takara's 1994 versus-fighting game for the Sega Genesis, Samurai Shodown.
Played through as Charlotte on the level 4 difficulty setting.
Though none of the 90s ports of Samurai Shodown ever pose the slightest threat to the Neo Geo's supremacy, the Sega Genesis one is probably my favorite. The characters are huge (especially compared to the fun-sized SNES sprites) and the Genesis's sound chip handles the music very nicely - it's not nearly as muddy sounding as the SNES game with its tinny samples. It's missing some things (partly because of the 24meg cart it shipped on): most of the intro is missing, much of the speech is gone (and that that remains sounds absolutely horrendous in classic Genesis fashion), the lower number of colors makes the game a bit too bright and garish to look at, and Earthquake is missing, but the controls are excellent, the game runs at a brisk pace and without constant slowdown, most of the violent effects are present, and in general it feels much closer to the arcade version.
The Genesis generally got the short-end of the stick when it came to Neo Geo ports, but not this time. It may not be perfect - not by a long shot - but it's easily the best way to play the classic arcade fighter on a 16-bit machine.
