Easily my favorite fighting game of all time. Just going to the arcade and seeing it on this huge arcade machine and hearing the game from across the arcade was amazing. One of the best parts was that you could play a vs match for a quarter!

Yes, this is the greatest fighting game of all time! I think it is the only neo Geo game that had a dedicated cabinet as well. I remember ordering the game for my AES and it was shipped for free on accident LOL I was like this is one hell of a Christmas present! Of course being the honest Guy that a I am I contacted the seller and fix it for him :-) I think it was about $250 back then brand new. I'll have to say that the current new samurai showdown rivals it and is incredible really enjoying it on the steam platform

This was hands down, the best in the Shodown series and probably fighter for that decade from SNK. I know people liked KoF, but this game had the best cast of characters, best move list and the animation and music was second to none. Last Blade 1 and 2 was a seriously fun contender, but i always had a fond spot in my heart for SS2. Once emulators were a thing a few years after this release, i played this game even more. They had so many iconic scenes for the fights, too. The rice field, the bamboo forest in the winter, the docks - it was SO good! Love this game!

I was introduced to this classic game in 2019, through Xbox Game Pass. The series, yet alone the game itself, were completely new to me and my college roommates. We must've played each other hundreds of times, each of us getting progressively better with our favorite characters. I especially enjoyed the music of the game as well. With the Xbox Game Pass version of this title (Xbox 360 arcade), an online feature was included. One night, we somehow managed to find another player in a Quick Match search, and finished a three round fight with a victory. Never again were we able to find an online opponent. The legend of this game grew for us, and will always have a certain mysteriousness to me.

Most memorable part of Samurai Showdown II was seeing the arcade cabinet while walking down a boardwalk, either in Santa Cruz or San Fran (don't recall, been a while). But seeing the giant fist guy on the screen SOLD Me. Later, my buddy and eye rented the Playstation version and played it to death. Genjuro was my favorite.

I remember picking up this gem from the bargain bin at my local PC game store for $5 (maybe 2003ish?). It came with a very generic label and jewel case. The only thing I knew of Samurai Showdown at the time was the anime. I remember this game being brutally difficult and downright unfair at times. But a few years after that I got the Samurai Showdown Bushido Retsuden RPG for Sega Saturn. It's a decent fighter but not in my top three.

This is without a doubt the best 2D weapons based fighter still to this day, but is it still the greatest fighter of all time, which it genuinely was imo on its release,but better than VF5, Soul Calibre 2, DoA 5,DoA 2 Ultimate,Super Street Fighter 2,Ultra SFIV,Capcom vs SNK 2,Marvel vs Capcom 2,Guilty Gear,Vampire Saviour/Darkstalkers 3 or Blazeblue C’T’ or C’S’ ? I would say it belongs to be listed side by side,along with all of those absolutely amazing & classic fighting games, both 2D & 3D, but there is one game that I can categorically say gets the better of Samaria Showdown 2 & it is a fellow SNK fighter, by the name of ‘Garou: Mark of the Wolves’, which is still the pinnacle of 2D fighting games imo,just as the various versions of VF5 are the pinnacle of all 3D fighting games of all time.

My second favorite fighting game of all time. The only game that outranks it for me was VSav. I have fond memories of playing SamSho 2 in my HS locker-room. Cham Cham quickly became a favorite of mine to play when I felt like a break from Nakoruru, and still ranks as one of my favorite characters in the series. Had to check and looks like they finally added her to SamSho2019. Might have to reinstall and download her.

The mystery as to why Tachibana na Ukiyo was sickly and coughing up blood… since the time of the first samurai showdown…
@BainesMkII
@BainesMkII 2 жыл бұрын
Ukyo had tuberculosis. The mystery was more how he survived so long, and the answer to that is "prequel games and retcons". The later 2D games were set before the events of SS2 (and SS6 was a dream match game), while the 3D games simply changed the fates of some characters. Ukyo was assumed to die of illness after SS2, then SS64 had him still alive, then he died of illness at the end of SS64-2, only to show up alive yet again in SS Sen.

@@BainesMkII It's not so easy to kill of a character like Ukyo without repercussions as he is one of the most iconic in the series. It's no wonder he is still involved in the troubles of the series in latter games.

Just played this recently! Unfortunately the game feels and looks dated. I also realised there's not really much use of tactics as I first thought many years ago when I first played it! Using hard slash can easily finish CPU opponents easily and quickly! You block - attack, or attack and that's it really. You can kid yourself it's more tactical and strategic, but the reality is it's not! I think for most here we were young and it is more a nostalgia fix than the dated game it is.

Sword fighting/ boxing is supposed to be like that. Short trades of blows, then back of, then repeat until you KO your opponent or time ran out. It's more realistic, and that's why the game stands out from other fighting games with the button spamming approach. You will regconise the similarity if you ever learn Kendo.
