NOTE (10/04/19): This lens DOES actually have a weather-sealing gasket around the rear mount - it's quite thin (I didn't notice at first!) but it is there. So, it's even more weather-sealed than I thought.

Good on you! You are quickly getting the reputation of being the reference point when you need the nitpicking details of a lens. Many review and say they like or not a lens, but you actually spend quite a lot of time not only testing the actual sharpness (and that is quite a time-consuming task, not only taking the pictures but analyzing it the way you do). You and I both know you can take very good pictures with most lenses, but you really need to test it to see the difference to evaluate if they are worth the money or not.

Me too! However if I did not own the 85mm f/1.8, I'd give this lens a hard look. I like the Sony focus hold button which I have reprogrammed to Eye-AF. However with full time Eye AF on the A7iii (with latest firmware update) and on the A6400, that is no longer needed...

Valerio Coronella i’ve only used the sony 85mm it’s really really sharp especially at F5.6 but i think most times we get caught up on name of brands there are cheap optics that prrform close to this one the samyang seems like a nice option imo as a sony shooter myself i can vouch the bodies are expensive enough i would recommend the samyang you’d save a couple hundred bucks that could go on another lens but if you’re getting paid to do portraits than invest a bit more and get the sony lens but if you’re not going to get that investment back i can’t recommend the sony just lopping money out like that with no reimbursement isn’t something i can ever agree with so whatever you decide to do good luck

Correction: there's also a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for Sony E-mount. Shame that it's quite a bit more expensive and quite a lot bigger than the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 for the Canon EF mount, and that it doesn't have the AF/MF switch. Compared to the Sony GM and Sigma equivalent I can't really complain about the size though.

So mine just came in today and I tested it side by side my Canon 85 1.2 ii adapted via the Sigma MC-11 on my A7RIII..... Positives of the Samyang 1.4 FE vs the Canon 85 1.2 ii: 1. SUPER light. The 85 1.2 canon alone is heavier than this Samyang AND the camera it seems like. The Samyang makes the A7Riii feel more balanced. 2. Very quiet focusing, and the focus is faster than the canon. My Samyang does not jitter when focusing like I have seen in many videos. It's snaps into focus and stays there. 3. Handles flaring well. The Canon always has this big circular rainbow flare when light is coming into the lens. The samyang didn't show any of that. 4. This is obviously sharper than the canon, not by a ton though. 5. Chromatic aberration much more controlled than the Canon. A little purple but not bad. Easily removed in Lightroom. The Canon has tons of purple fringing at 1.2, especially when back lit or in sunlight. I have had to dump some of my shots from the canon on professional shoots due to this. 6. The Samyang has more contrast. 7. The Samyang focuses better in low light. Finds things where the canon doesn't. Negatives vs the Canon: 1. This is a BIG one for me. The Canon 1.2 Fstop vs 1.4 makes a big difference. The bokeh is more creamier, everything out of focus more, depth of field smaller by a good margin with the 1.2. 2. The Canon renders color better. The Samyang has a strong yellow color cast. Had to do a fair amount of adjusting in Lightroom to get them to look similar. 3. The Samyang has no AF/MF switch. So if I want to manually focus I have to do it via the function menu. With the Canon you can just quickly flip the switch and get focus assist. So in summary, the Samyang has many more positives, but the two positives the Canon has are BIG ones for me. The reason I shoot so much with the Canon is for that insane bokeh rendering. When I am able to take my time, it's gold, as long as there's not to much crazy flare. The only way I'm going to get that 1.2 look with auto-focus right now though is with the Canon. No one else has it. Tis a shame. So it's a hard choice for me....the Samyang is a GREAT deal for the price and what you get...but do I keep the samyang or send it back and grab and grab a 70-200 2.8 GM, keep using the 85 1.2 on my 5D....hmmm....

Thanks, great points here. Am mostly shooting my 135 f2L on a canon for the bokeh and colour rendition for portrait, but looking at 85mm to be able to be closer to subject or get more space around it. Being a bit spoiled from the 135 I find the Samyang bokeh a bit annoying. About the 85 1.2 look only on canon, a friend of mine has used his with an adapter fine on the Sony and especially loves it for the eye focus tracking. So maybe something worth trying out :)

Samyang seem to be heading in a good direction since their AF lenses have improved slightly with each new release. I guess it will create the dilemma of this lens vs the Sony f/1.8. but more choice is always a good thing. If both were available I think I would still go 'first party' and buy the Sony f/1.8 but I can understand the attraction of cheap f/1.4 lenses.

Yes I have the Sony and won't be selling it for this. The 1.4 is always nice to have but the the price is similar and I didn't like the way the Samyang hesitated before snapping into focus on video. Nice review chris , I just sold my sony 85mm f1.8 and picking one of these lenses , I heard about the autofocusing problems which can be fixed a bit by the firmware update , in my opinion the AF fails most of the time because of a user error ! we've unfortunately got used to depend on the camera to do everything for us and honestly classifying the lens for portrait , kind of makes no sense to let the autofocus issue become deal breaker , a portrait photographer should be able to focus manually or at least control his shots to be in focus !!! I have to say for the price range and the discounts on it now it's hard to resist picking one and put it in your lens collection ..... just for that smooth nice bokeh.

Ive been thinking lately is it really that hard or undesirable to just put hard stops instead of that infinite spinning? It can still be focus by wire but just put some stops there
@0ooTheMAXXoo0
@0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 жыл бұрын
For focus by wire some like the option of the speed of the turn changing how much the turn means. Like mouse acceleration. So if you move the focus ring fast then it is a short quarter-turn to get from the closest to infinity but if you move the ring slowly then it would take more than a whole turn to get from the closest to infinity. Basically when you are fine focusing you get finer control and when you want to change the focus quickly you get faster control. If you do any kind of focus motion that is not a 1:1 copy of what the ring is doing then you will end up in situations where the ring will not be in the right place to match where the focus is and then the hard stop will get in the way. Also, just the physical interface could be a problem in that the ring positions would have to send unique numbers for every possible position (CPU would always need to know the absolute position of the ring). With a free-spinning knob you just have to note that the ring is moving one way or the other, never caring about the absolute position.

Thanks. Ive watched this and your review with the Samyang 75 f/1.8 back to back now and is it my imagination or is the 75 actually better in the corners? It seems so, and the 75 is half the price of this one. I just got the 75 and was curious how much better the 85 f/1.4 was, doesn't look to be much better at all really. The one complaint you had about the 75 was that the background can look at bit busy with close subjects as you showed the squirrel. You show the same scene here and it looks almost identical ha.

They are both sharp and have good bokeh. Sony AF should be a bit better and Samyang has the f1.4. F1.4 is a noticeable difference if you want to shoot wide open portraits but f1.8 at 85mm is still a very bright lens. Basically if you want f1.4 then the Sony version costs huge and the Samyang is the obvious answer. If f1.8 if fine for you then the Sony 85mmf1.8 is almost as good as the GM f1.4 and AF should be better so that is then the obvious answer.

Not just the AF - it would not MF either on both my A7iii or A6300. Complete non focussing F1.4 lens. Most, if not all, of the negative reviews around mention the focus capabilities of this lens in one form or another so it would appear to be a possible weakness. Very disappointing. Probably slightly better AF and IQ on the Sony. F1.4 makes a noticeable difference if shooting wide open portraits. Samyang lens maybe has smoother bokeh. Chris didn't mention the f1.8 in the video because that is really the difference. You take any of your lenses and use it wide open. Then stop it down one step. Background blur is way less and brightness is way less. The f1.8 seems an amazing lens and should be an easy choice unless you want the f1.4, in which case the Samyang is the easy choice. There are plenty of famous f2 to f4 portrait lenses at medium telephoto lengths so the f1.8 is not bad at all but it is different to f1.4 for sure.

hi I accidentally bought the samyang 85mm for four thirds Olympus but I have a micro four thirds em5 mark II camera. so I bought an adapter ring and did get it to work, but now the screen is blank. any ideas on how I can get it to work? I really want to use this lens!

Excellent concise review that hits the important points. Do you happen to know how the overall rendering beauty compares with that of the Sony f/1.4 GM 85mm? Or how other aspects compare such as autofocus noise? Thank you.

I have been waiting for this too! A bit disappointed I must say... I hoped for a performance closer to the 85 art... But no mention of it being close. I'll stick to my Samyang 85 1.2 XP! Manual focus isn't bad on Sony. 😎

Is that video af with a shutter press, or is it letting the af-c catch up on its own as you move the frame? I find with most lenses, the former is more abrupt and sometimes results in that overshoot-and-correct we see here. But with many it's much smoother and more subtle when the camera starts to shift its focus on its own.

Since this one is in the same price range as the Sigma 85mm F 1.4 EX. Which one is the better buy? I’m using canon and Samyang also makes this for canon version. Thank you!

Can you test the Samyang 85 mm autofocus lens for Nikon: Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 F Lens for Nikon F? The Sony FE 85, although similar, is actually a different lens. I cannot find any review for the lens with the Nikon mount. Thank-you.

Hi Christopher. First of all, many thanks for You reviews You're doing fantastic job, but there's always a "but". I am currently looking for 85 mm lens for my Sony and watched all related videos You've made and checked tons of sample photos, but this put me in a little bit of a decision making problem. Which one do I choose? Samyang or Sony? Or maybe should I go different path and rather get Sigma 50mm Art as I don't shoot much of a portraits (loved my Sigma 60mm on APS-C)? Which one would You recommend to casual photo enthusiast, clicking just for fun? I mean, "just for fun" but still love good quality.

Christopher, did you observe any lack of sharpness when shooting under 3,5m and/or close to the minimum focus distance? Opticallimits mentioned that the lens is very sharp only when shooting at infinity.

Very nice lens. But Samyang should produce more their tiny f2.8 lenses like 24mm or 35mm. I prefer small lenses to walk around and they have quite good optics and sharpness. Something like 85mm f2.8 would be good enough and not expensive.

Soooo, the Sigma 56mm or the Samyang 85 over the Sony 85 on an A6400?
@0ooTheMAXXoo0
@0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 жыл бұрын
56mm is totally different focal length than 85mm. All lens "mm" numbers are listed as if they were full frame lenses. That 56mm APS-C lens on an APS-C camera will give you the field of view of an 84mm lens on a full frame camera. Those 85mm full frame lenses that you mention, used on a A6400 will give you the field of view of a 123mm lens on a full frame camera. So in this case it is a bit like you are comparing a screwdriver to two different hammers and asking which is the best. A 56mm lens is a different tool from a 85mm lens.
