I had this lens for my Fujifilm X-T1, and it was amazing. No I have the Samsung NX1, and I'm waiting for this lens for that camera. Really looking forward to using it again, and excited to see how it performs at f/2 with the 28 megapixel sensor of the NX1. This lens is truly stellar. But like you said, the stars it makes isn't very interesting. It has only 6 blades, but some of the newer lenses from Samyang has 9 blades which helps a lot on the stars, I with this had that as well.

Dear Dustin, just to be sure, the infinity focus stops before the hard stop, so that means at the beginiing of the "L" symbol?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 жыл бұрын
Matthieu Milhaud There can be a tiny bit of variance per copy (this allows for some adjustment due to weather conditions). It is best to just find out where infinity comes on your copy by magnifying the image and visually verifying accurate infinity focus on your copy.

Hi Dustin, Thanks for recommending the Canon 55-200mm for my M50 in one of your other videos, I purchased one and love it. I would like to know If you would recommend the Canon 11-22 or the Samyang 12mm if you already have the 22mm Pancake? Thank you.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
That depends on your tolerance for manual focus and whether or not you plan to shoot astro. The Samyang is a great astro lens and obviously has a big maximum aperture advantage. The Canon has a lot of its own advantages, though, from autofocus to a zoom range to image stabilization.

Thanks for the video, Dustin! I've had trouble finding video reviews of this lens and I was/am very interested in it. Question: I just bought my Sony A6000 and only have the 16-50mm f3.5~5.6 kit lens (yes, I am very much a beginner in photography haha). Would you say this Rokinon lens would blow the one I have out of the water? Would I be amazed by it? I understand it's kind of a subjective question, I really like wide angle photos though. Thank you very much and great job!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 жыл бұрын
Rogerio, first of all, I don't have direct experience with the lens you are talking about. I do have a lot of experience with lenses in general, however, and I believe the optical performance of this lens is going to be superior to most all zoom lenses. The focal length is fabulous (particularly in Sony E-Mount).

Thanks for the info depth review. What's your thought on attaching this lens to FF mirrorless like sony a7? I have sony apsc now and this is by far the best lens for Milky way shots at night. Thinking about upgrade to FF and I understand the only drawback will be shooting only in crop mode so half the max resolution, but amount of light collected and angle of view should be the same... Am I right?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 жыл бұрын
menthal I'm not quite sure how this all works in the Sony universe as I have never shot a Sony camera (yet). I don't see an issue with what you've proposed, however, so long as the mount will go on the A7

What a great review. I have the EOSM as well and like to a lot of landscape/nightscape/star trails. Would you have any thoughts on how the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS Lens for Canon EF-M Mount might compare to the lens you reviewed for those situations? The f/2 is tempting with the 12mm - but I am not sure how much 'wider' that 2mm difference makes the 10mm. Going to purchase one here in the next day or two and I am pretty sold on the 12mm you reviewed. Definitely want to get more of a wide angle to my night shots than the stock 22mm f/2 gives me and it looks like these two lenses are within 30ish bucks of each other. I really do love nightscapes/astrophotography though, so want to make the best choice for my money/desires.

Hi, I'm planning on using this lens for film making, I'd love to be able to shoot close ups of objects and faces without standing too far back. Is this the lens for me? Thanks.
@DustinAbbottTWI

Shooting faces at close distances with a wide angle lens produces a lot of distorting of features. It sounds like you are looking for a telephoto lens, not a wide angle one.

Mark Groening Mark, I don't really have first-hand knowledge of how that would play out. You can sometimes get away with it with a zoom (as you've mentioned), but primes are built to pretty tight tolerances. I doubt it would be a great idea.

would you happen to know what kind of resolution the lens is?? cause if it's a 10mp in sharpness, it's a waste if used on a 24 mp sensor

I'm not sure this is accurate. A lens' resolution is not really measured like this. But, to answer your question (I think), the lens has no problem appearing crisp and sharp even wide open on my 24MP Canon EOS M3 body.

Hello, I've been wondering for a while about manual lenses for fuji x-mount. Like the rokinon 12mm you are talking about. Please, could any of you answer a single question?. Given that the lens is not only manual focus, but manual aperture too, so the diaphragm blades are not controlled by the camera body in the moment the trigger is pressed but controlled by the aperture ring and therefore the blades close on the moment the user stops down the lens to, lets say, f8, and therefore the amount of light reaching the sensor is much lower, i'd like to ask you if the Electronic Viewfinder can operate in such bad conditions, i'd like to know if the manual focus aids like focus picking or magnified view can work with the lens stopped down manually to f8 in an already low light situation like dawn or interior. I other words, i'd like to know if the electronic viewfinder is going to compensate and increase the electric signal in the sensor enough to work and focus with manual aperture lenses stopped down. Make my question sense? Thanks
@DustinAbbottTWI

I can't speak for the individual body, but I use the lens with an EV-F stopped down on the Canon EOS M3 without issue.

I went to a shop and tried the rokinon 14mm manual lens in a fujifilm x-t1 and the electronic viewfinder worked perfectly and allowed me to use manual focus aids inside the shop even at f22. The image in the viewfinder turned a bit noisy at f16 and f22, but much better than i thought it was going to be. The final image was perfect obviously. Thank you for your reply Mr. Abbott

Hi Dustin. First let me say your reviews have help me immensely in my final decision to purchase my Rokinon lenses. I was testing these lenses for sharpness using testing charts. I was happy to see I received good copies. Now to my question. I was shooting and saving as jpeg and raw and to my astonishment every jpeg was sharp and every raw file was more than slightly out of focus. I don't shoot raw so this was my first experience looking at raw files. I couldn't image this was caused by the lens and to prove that I used the Sony kit lens and had the same results. Is this normal?Bill

The focus should be the same (they are the same image). The RAW file will require sharpening and perhaps a contrast boost, but it will not be out of focus.
