The San Antonio Zoo is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo in Midtown San Antonio, Texas, United States. It is located in the city's Brackenridge Park. The 35-acre (14 ha) zoo has a collection of over 3,500 animals representing 750 species. The zoo's annual attendance exceeds 1,000,000. It also runs non-animal attractions, such as the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge San Antonio Zoo Eagle train ride, which first opened in 1956 and utilizes three Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives.
History of San Antonio Zoo:
What is now known as the San Antonio Zoo began in 1914 when Colonel George Washington Brackenridge, one of the city's leading citizens, placed bison, deer, monkeys, African lions, and bears on land he had deeded to the city. The land became Brackenridge Park and Golf Course.
The San Antonio Zoo opened two of the first cageless exhibits in the United States in November 1929 that offered visitors views of the animals not available in caged exhibits. The Richard Friedrich Aquarium was dedicated in 1948, and the Hixon Bird House, funded through the efforts of Colonel Frederick C. Hixon, opened in 1966. The zoo's bird collection is now one of the world's largest.
The San Antonio Zoo housed the first herd of addra gazelle in captivity in 1969 and continues to be active in the breeding program for this critically endangered species. Due to the former hoofstock quarantine point in San Antonio, the San Antonio Zoo has historically had a wide variety of hoofstock species.
The zoo is involved in breeding a number of endangered species including black rhino, leopard, golden lion tamarin, dama gazelle, Attwater's prairie chicken, black mangabey, African lion, black-footed ferret, Komodo dragon, Andean condor, and Caribbean flamingos.
The zoo opened Phase II of Africa Live in 2010. Phase I, which opened in 2007, brought a new exhibit for hippos with underwater viewing area and one for new Nile crocodiles as well as many other smaller animals. Phase II contains Angolan colobus monkeys, okapi, African hunting dogs, rock hyrax, and various species of birds contained in the second largest aviary in the world. On June 18, 2013, a two-headed turtle, along with three one-headed turtles hatched. The two-headed turtle was later named Thelma and Louise after the 1991 film. Thelma and Louise later died on July 29, 2014, from unknown causes.

I was born in San Antonio. Left Tx at age three… I was a military kid. From Tx, my family lived in Germany for a few years and then transplanted to Tn where I have lived ever since. First back to San Antonio since I was three was 2007… my husband and I went there to visit the city, Sea World and the Zoo at Breckinridge. We did not ride the train, but I had remembered riding it at when I was two or three around the Breckinridge Park.. even remembered playing at the playground… I may have been to the zoo at that young too. Watching this video brings back memories of my 2007 trip… I know the place has changed a lot though since. I would love to get back there again someday soon. Thanks for the memories.

I was the child of an army man as well. Growing up my dad was in the USA military, but he died in 2022 and we miss him. I had a great relationship with my dad and I cried a lot when he died. :( He had stomach cancer and he passed away at the age of 63. My mom said she felt like that was still too young for somebody to die.

American and Caribbean are the same kind of flamingo. They are usually a hot pink and inhabit areas around the Americas. They just have two common names, but are the same species. Greater flamingo is a different type of bird that is found throughout Africa, India, Middle East, and souther Europe. Their plumage is much paler than American/Caribbean Flamingos.

@@TomsRoadTrippin I have seen them used interchangeably at different zoos. I know for a fact National calls them American Flamingos and I think Birmingham does too, so it just depends on the zoo. Also, I wanted to thank you for your awesome videos. I have been applying to jobs at different zoos around the country and your videos have helped a lot.

The Spectacled Bear, is named because some of these bears have rings around their eyes, as those they were wearing glasses or spectacles. This old name for them is rarely used these days by most zoos, instead they call them Andean Bears. Interesting to note that the famous "Paddington Bear" of the books, came from deepest darkest Peru. He is always depicted as a Brown Bear? The only bear in Peru is the Andean Bear, which is always black.
@TomsRoadTrippin

I've been to just a handful of zoo's that used the name Spectacled Bears. Most have them as the Andean Bear, either way, they are cute bears.

Interestingly this starts off with 18.99 covering admission plus other expensive options. Presently it's $36 just to enter the door, no options. Hey, this video's very good. I wish I only watched this and didn't waste $36 and hours of my life. In 2023 I never saw a lion, tiger, hippo, any of 8 forms of monkee/gorilla/etc., alligator, cow, pig, or donkey. No zebras. No elephants. I did see 2 giraffes, 2 kangaroos, one bear, 2 squirrel monkees, 3 rhinos, 4 dirty flamingos, a giant lizard and something called a fishing cat. I had dreamed of visiting the cat grotto, formerly the best thing; I got one "fishing cat". This is a great video; and the zoo is my worst, most regretted investment of time and money in 2023.
@TomsRoadTrippin
@TomsRoadTrippin 5 ай бұрын
That's quite the price increase, I realize things get more expensive but that's crazy. I am sorry you didn't get to see many animals, I usually return to a habitat several times if I miss an animal. I know that is not feasible for everyone, I do it to try and show all the animals.

I had a horrible, physically exhausting and frustrating experience visiting that zoo. Since I estimate over 90% of their visitors are San Antonio residents - especially many with annual passes, as the zoo strongly pushes - they assume their customers know their way around, and understand the odd nicknames for park sections, and where the interesting animals are hidden. But unless you're a repeat visitor (and some locals come numerous times each year), it's hopeless. Then there are the almost USELESS direction signs. The signs are incompetently weak. To fully inflict the frustration, _they refuse to provide park maps. Period._ They REQUIRE you to look at an image on your 4 inch phone screen, which maybe has 60 landmarks on the page. Even the best fast tapping phone user cannot make that work. Zoo: charge $10 for the formerly free maps. No one will litter if you do that. And I for one will feel $100 happier.
@Bill_Woo
@Bill_Woo 8 ай бұрын
Conclusion: don't visit if you're from out of town - unless your legs don't mind 9 hours (park ads claim 3. WRONG) wandering aimlessly and almost constantly going down false paths. Excellent KZfaq videos improve your odds, but this park is designed for repeat visitors, and first timers will be frustrated. One more thing: in late 2023 there is construction with I'm talking LOUD equipment noise, and some entrances don't work, and you have to do much more walking, and other frustrations occur. Since the direction signs are so truly useless, you probably wouldn't find the exit anyway (I spent 25 minutes on that alone). Hey, I admire that they're keeping the park open rather than closing it for a year as some operations might choose. But my warning stands: you might want to check that renovations are not in progress.
@TomsRoadTrippin

With most zoos, the locals make up a good portion of visitors. It's also the locals that make up for most of the donations that support the zoo. I am sorry you had such a bad time on your visit. I hope that doesn't stop you from checking out other zoos. I welcome your support of my channel and I hope you'll check here before heading out to another zoo.
