Are you dreaming of pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a tropical paradise getaway? Look no further than the San Blas Islands in Panama. This archipelago of over 350 islands is a hidden gem that’s just waiting to be explored. The islands are part of the Comarca de Kuna Yala, an independent indigenous territory stretching from the Caribbean side of Panama to Colombia. In this video, I will show you everything you need to know to plan your trip and make the most of your time in San Blas Islands.
The San Blas Islands are located off the eastern coast of Panama in the Caribbean Sea. While San Blas is technically part of Panama, it’s actually an autonomous Indigenous province, and it is run by the Guna people. The Guna people are the residents of the San Blas Islands/Guna Yala. They are an Indigenous tribe with a long history that predates the existence of Panama and Central America.
While you won’t find any touristy cities or resorts on the San Blas islands, there are Guna communities on 49 of the 370 islands in San Blas.
The trip from Panama City takes about 4 hours in total. Most tours leave early in the morning and include a 2.5-hour 4WD ride to the port, where you’ll then hop on a 30 to 45-minute boat to the islands. This is typically included in most day trips.
You can always come to San Blas and just enjoy doing literally nothing. You can easily spend the entire day lazily swinging in a hammock with a coconut or a cool drink in your hands but the islands offer so much more.
4 things are mandatory for your visit:
Original passport - Your passport will be checked upon entering the Comarca of Kuna Yala
Cash - San Blas runs on cash only so make sure to bring sufficient and in small bills ($1 and $5 bills recommended) since change is very sparse.
Don’t forget your beachwear - bathing suit, a towel, sunglasses, sun protection and some casual beachwear. Most accommodations don’t provide towels or soap/shampoo so bring those along as well.
The San Blas islands are under a tropical maritime climate with temperatures almost the entire year at around 80-85-degree Fahrenheit and night temperatures at around 70-75' degree Fahrenheit. There are only two main seasons - dry season and rainy season - and each has its own characteristics.
