Hey Brotha you may find if you don't fill your reels with so much mono it will drastically minimize your backlashes. After 35 yrs on the water I've learned one or two helpful tricks. Hope it helps. Especially you buddy running the boat. Another good technique is to slow troll your surface irons just ahead of the fish. Works the same as casting with no chance of operator error. Mexican panga fisherman have perfected the technique. Infact alot will take a brand new surface iron and scrape off all the paint before they fish it. Color means nothing. It's all about how it swims.

Hey Mr. SD Fish and Sips. It is Drew from Bob's Tackle in Norwalk CA. Get a Shimano Torium 20. Let me make some adjustments to it. Fill it with 30lb. Mono or with braid and at least 80-100yds of mono (casting length approx.) and you will cast way farther. Braid for a main line isn't for everything.

I've watched a couple of your videos and you seem like a really nice guy who is totally stoked on fishing, which is awesome! The casting will come with more practice. A couple of pieces of advice - when you feel the bite on an iron, don't swing to set the hook - just keep reeling through the bite. It's tough to get used to when first starting out but you'll catch a lot more fish that way. Also try not to put your hand/thumb on the spool when the fish is taking line. More important when bait fishing but still a good habit to get into. Lastly, ignore the haters about it being tail hooked - you got one. Congrats bro!

@@SDFishandSips You handled that comment with class. I would recommend taking your rod and reel to a park or open field with an old surface iron with no treble hook and casting. Fishing on a skiff your best side to be casting on would be the starboard side aproximately 90 degrees since your left handed your swing angle will veer to the left, casting port side will disrupt your cast because of the t top. Also how long is that rod? Doesnt look like the best setup, single speed reel penn fathom 25N is a great economical choice paired up with a nice 9 ft like calstar 90J or 9 ft seeker pinhead Ulua are among the best 9 footers and can be found used fairly priced. Haha. Exactly. Better to be lucky than good sometimes. Funny you talk about the Tranx500 HG. It is sitting in front of me but needs to be repaired. Parts are hard to get so I am sending directly to Shimano because I heard good things about their service program. I heard today from a guy at West Marine that he prefers the Tranx 500PG over the HG. I had theTranx on that Terez rod. Do you have any recommendations for a setup? What are some of your favorites? Thanks for watching, your time, and engagement. Tight lines!
@ultimatejay
@ultimatejay 3 жыл бұрын
@@SDFishandSips - for throwing surface irons and jigs you want a good reel with a star drag- Tranx 500, Trinidad 20a, Torium, OEM Fathom 2. It would be better to fight a big fish with a 2 speed but they don’t cast very well because the free spool is not great and it’s easy to get a backlash like you experienced. So it’s better to get a rod 8-10ft and a good star drag reel to make Long casts. When chasing schools of fish like bluefin you don’t want to rush right up to them with your boat because most of the time they will sink out. So what you want to do is take your time look what direction they are headed and get ahead of them preferably up wind and then kill your boat engine and all accessories so there is no noise and then make long downwind casts in TNT’s foamers. You will get much more hook ups and the only downside is hooking a giant you will have a long battle but that’s part of the game

I found myself screaming at the tv. You guys were blowing it big time surrounded by fish, throwing backlashes every cast. Finally a hook up now to see if you could redeem yourselves.

Thank you Anthony. What length(s) and model(s) are some of your favorites? I originally had my Tranx 500 on this Terez Rod but switched things up after I got gear stolen. I’m actually looking to purchase a new rod/reel combo for throwing irons/poppers at feeding tunas. Thanks for watching, your time, and your engagement. Tight lines!

You guys need to work on your casting skills for real, great fish but I wouldn’t brag about a tail hooked plug fish.

Thanks S H. Yes I definitely need to work on my casting skills. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. So stoked on getting a LJ Bluefin tuna. Such a special fish for me personally. Thank you for watching and your honest feedback. Tight lines!!

So you do understand that foul hooking is 100% normal right? Tuna and game fish, ESPECIALLY bluefin, don’t blow right through the bait. They swipe at it. So it is entirely common to catch a fish in the side of it misses your bait on the first swipe. Also, ITS A FOAMER. There are hundreds of lbs of fish swimming in close proximity every which way. It can happen and does frequently. It also makes it more difficult to reel in. Get over yourself, read a rule book, and get some experience before commenting garbage on someone’s post that is just meant to spread positivity.

Haha. Right on Richard. I’m thankful you had a chance to voice your perspective on my video. I am grateful that I was not freshwater bass or salmon fishing where it would be against the rules to snag a fish. When fishing Bluefin Tuna in California I am allowed to tail hook a fish like I did in this video. Thank you for watching, your time, and your engagement. Tight lines!
