They traded FOUR draft choices to move up and get JJ Stokes. Let that sink in. How sorry was the drafting that season? They needed to replace Watters.. there was a LOT of running back talent in that draft and they settled for Derek Loville... and gave up four picks for an average at best receiver in Stokes. Gosh, I cant figure out why Green Bay started dominating them.............

I remember the play so well when Warren Sapp twisted Jerry Rice back on that face mask call at 41:30 It was on a reverse and he just caught him up high and pulled back. It tore Jerry's ACL and caused him to miss most of the season, only to come back later in the year and break his knee cap. He was never as dominant from that point on. With Steve Young also getting roughed up in this game, it really set the Niners back that year.

I mean, he was great in Oakland...seems like he got some of his explosion back with us in 2001. And in 2002, he put up a 92/1200/7 season. At 40. That's absolutely remarkable.

Jerry Rice had never stayed down after being tackled - I remember the longtime 49ers radio announcer Joe Starkey saying "folks, we LITERALLY have never seen this" while he was on the ground being tended to. Would probably have been a career-ender for most players his age but he had the work ethic to come back which he deserves credit for.

Rice was like 13th year in the league by this time and most players who played in the 80's were retired or out of the league. Football players took such beatings back then most didn't play very long careers if you got 10 that was like exceptional every year after that was a testament and luck . Rice played til 2004 but had success up til 2002. Most players would have retired after the season or after the game because of the injury. Rice was warrior to come back and play week 16 and play year after year shows he a great player.

Fast forward to the playoffs that year, Green Bay ended both of their seasons. Green Bay's defense wasn't too bad either. They gave up only 1 offensive td in 2 playoff games. Then they played Denver in SB32 and they couldn't stop the run. That Denver team wanted it more. One of the best super bowl games ever.

This is the game that set the tone for the Bucs in 1997.

I think it set the tone for the entire run leading up to their Super Bowl win five years later. The Bucs finished 5-2 in '96, but they were still a 6-10 club and people weren't really taking them seriously as a contender going into '97. That entire perception changed after this opening game and they didn't lose that mojo again until after they had won the Super Bowl.

Yea this game propelled us into the playoff mix in '97 & for many years after that....we capped it off with a Super Bowl victory in 2002..We kept knocking on door and we bust it open in '02....I feel it comin again this season..this year we will have a game where we shock people and be taking serious again..maybe last year it was the Seattle game..who knows

In Week 1 of the 1997 NFL season, god saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wear their white uniforms and pewter pants and played an NFL game with the San Francisco 49ers.

I hated Mike Shula but at least he knew how to use Alstott unlike Gruden who would rather have Mike Pittman running into the back of his o-line on every play.

Yeah Gruden did not know how to use Alstott.
@untexan
@untexan 6 жыл бұрын
Alstott’s stats were about the same as ever in 2002, but he started breaking down around Year 2 of Gruden. There was a play in that horrible loss to Carolina in 2003 where Alstott slammed into the back of Joe Jurevicius’s knee with his helmet. He messed up his neck, went on IR, and I don’t think he was ever the same after that.

No point in watching a game from 20 years ago if your putting the score in the description

1. This game was played 20 years ago. 2. The scores have been out for 20 years, so you're 20 years late. 3. Not my fault that you do not like the score of a game that was played 20 years in the description.
